elcome to the long awaited 2011 Subscription Season. What better way to launch our inaugural season, than by bringing a

myriad of rich and varied theatre experiences to enrich the cultural life of our city. With an exquisite combination of music, drama, dance and musical theatre the 2011 Season is set to impress.

The Ar ts Centre Gold Coast team has worked hard to bring ar ts organisations from across the country together for a year of non-stop, high quality performances. But equally we have focused on telling Gold Coast stories and promoting Gold Coast ar tists. With this in mind 2011 highlights include the world premiere of John Michael Howson’s (co-writer of hit musicals; Dusty – the original pop diva and Shout!), brand new musical - Pyjamas in Paradise and our very own Artist in Residence Ben Veitch’s production, Blood Sweat and Dance. We are also thrilled to present for the f irst time on the Gold Coast in more than 10 years the acclaimed Sydney based Bell Shakespeare with their production of Julius Caesar and the prestigious Bangarra Dance Theatre with their production of Mathinna, a girl’s journey between two cultures.

I invite you to embrace this oppor tunity to explore the ar ts in 2011 and become a subscriber this season. Not only will you open your hear t, eyes and ears to a bounty of stunning performances but you will receive exclusive benef its including substantially discounted tickets, your favourite seat at every show and invitations to special events held at The Ar ts Centre.

We need to dance, not because we want to but because we have to... BEN VEITCH, 2010

For many performers the stage is a place of simultaneous fear and joy. Some dancers choose to reveal who they truly are, while others hide behind their mask. Brutal honesty of self is the key to a dancer’s success on the stage. Those who believe will capture the human hear t. This is the opening scene from Ben Veitch’s newest dance theatre work Blood, Sweat and Dance.

Blood, Sweat and Dance represents an eclectic range of dance styles including ballet, urban, Latin and contemporary. Underpinning the extraordinary, high energy dance routines, is a storyline exposing the real and often brutal world of a dancer. As the plot unfolds we discover the passion and motivation that drives a dancer, as well as the vulnerable nature of balancing life on and off the stage.

Choreographed by So You Think You Can Dance f inalist, and The Ar ts Centre Gold Coast’s Ar tist in Residence, Ben Veitch.

A great story of tolerance and resilience in hard times. Uplifting!THE AGE, MELBOURNE, 2009

Café Rebetika! is an epic story of the hear t; a passionate and uplifting theatre production set in the slums of 1930’s urban Greece during the rise of Rebetika (Greek blues). Cabaret, music, theatre and dance unite in this new production set in the exotic and gutsy Rebetika sub-culture. Born out of outcast despair, the men and women of Rebetika create a utopia of acceptance, respect and def iance.

At the centre of the story is the Manga Stavrakas, played by award-winning actor Tony Nikolakopoulos and his lover

Areti. As their love story unravels, Stavrakas is confronted with a moral crisis and the limitations of his iron clad ethical code. Directed by Stephen Lloyd Helper, written by Stephen Lloyd Helper and Thomas Papathanassiou and developed with Rebetiki – Café Rebetika! is a tale that resonates with all audiences.

PYJAMAS IN PARADISEBy John Michael Howson & Peter PinneProudly sponsored by BBC Digital , Friends of The Arts Centre Gold Coast and Stewart Si lver King and Burns

Before there was Schoolies, there was Pyjamas in Paradise!

In the late 1950’s and early 1960’s, long before Schoolies appeared on the scene, pyjama par ties attracted thousands of young people from all around Australia to the small resor t town of Surfers Paradise. Their popularity put Surfers on the map.

Follow the story of Bruce Large – retired (kind of), fast talking (always), larger than life (def initely) and his controversial dream to turn ‘Surfers’ into paradise! Set in a time where bikinis were Itsy Bitsy, love had people All Shook Up and everyone was desperate for a Summer Holiday, Pyjamas in Paradise is a hilarious look at what life may have been like…if life was a musical and Meter Maids were back up singers for the Supremes!

From the co-writer of Dusty – The Original Pop Diva and Shout!, John-Michael Howson and Peter Pinne, The Ar ts Centre Gold Coast in association with BBC Digital, Friends of The Ar ts Centre Gold Coast and Stewart Silver King and Burns is proud to present the world premiere of Pyjamas in Paradise!

Thu 6 Oct, 7.30pmFri 7 Oct, 11.00am & 7.30pm

It’s as if Shakespeare’s players have travelled through time and landed in Surry Hills, drunk, horny and unafraid to rip up their lines. SUN HERALD, 2009

It’s a hopeless and wonderful world. The seasons have gone awry, the grownups are in denial, and the young are randy with hope and despair. Suddenly, in the midst of overwhelming uncer tainty, four young lovers take a mighty stab at happiness.

This Midsummer Night’s Dream is a theme-par ty about shattered innocence and the restoration of grace. Prepare

for a glittering karaoke night of love ballads and curses, wedding songs and bestiality, culminating in a special nuptial performance by the acclaimed Rude Mechanicals of Peter Quince’s tragic masterpiece, Pyramus and Thisbe.

Ar ts Radar brings us a new production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Director Eamon Flack has turned this great Shakespearean classic into a grand, decadent and sad celebration – a par ty unfolding on stage, shot through with karaoke ballads and comedy.

If you like... Bell Shakespeare’s - Julius CaesarDATE Tue 11 Oct, 7.30pmWed 12 Oct, 11.00am

To see the future one must only look to the past. Like many who came before him and after him, Julius Caesar had the suppor t of the people but the loathing of the players.

They conspired. They persuaded. They whispered it was for the good of the country. All they needed to succeed was Brutus. Poor patriotic Brutus. He was like a son to Caesar and a poster boy for the republic. But not even a front-man of such unimpeachable integrity could aver t the total and utter disaster their daggers set in motion.

Peter Evans, Bell Shakespeare’s new Associate Ar tistic Director, takes this momentous piece of Roman history and transpor ts it to the corridors of backroom politics. This time,

when Caesar gets the axe, it’s the media who roar like an angry mob.

This sharp political drama puts friendship to the test and reveals a stark contrast between our intentions and our actions. With Alex Menglet as Caesar and Kate Mulvany as the conniving Cassius, we go behind the scenes as yet another leader is forced from off ice.

…..A stunning piece of dance theatre. I have never seen a narrative line delivered in a piece of dance with clarity and vision as this.INSIDE OUT AUSTRALIA, 2008

Inspired by a girl’s journey between two cultures, Mathinna traces the history of an Aboriginal girl removed from her traditional life, adopted into Western Colonial society to be ultimately returned to the fragments of her original heritage. Mathinna became the archetype of the ‘stolen child’ and in this stunning work, Bangarra Dance Theatre recreates her powerful story of vulnerability and searching in an era of confusion and intolerance.

Bangarra bases its creative spirit on Aboriginal and Torres

Strait Islander traditions and stories producing a powerful new language that combines the traditional and the contemporary. This potent, original and distinctive style tells the stories unifying the past and the present.

Bangarra’s inf luence continues to resonate throughout the world with the company earning a prominent place on the international touring circuit. The company has performed in countries such as the United Kingdom, France, Germany, USA, Japan, China and New Zealand.

Around the world, audiences agree a Bangarra experience is nothing shor t of mesmerising.
