Toolbox for Peace

What would you have in your peace-building toolkit?

Fill up a box with items or ideas that represent your vision for peace.

Examples:

• a photo of you and/or friends with symbols of peace (e.g. a dove, rainbow, olive branch)

• a collage or flag with words and phrases that you associate with peace

• a set of ‘Peace Rules’ that you and friends think are important

• something sporty, e.g. a football, netball, cricket ball

• a ‘peace pledge’, something you can do to practice peace on your own and with friends

Photos/ videos/ audio ideas

How many ways can you think of to display the hashtag? #Commonwealth4Peace

Examples:

• spell out the hashtag using letter placards (19 children, 1 for each character)

• write the hashtag on your blackboard/ whiteboard/ in the sand

• bake a peace-themed cake/ cupcakes

• paint the hashtag/ logo design on to pebbles/ rocks

• fingerprint the theme design

• decorate an old t-shirt with the theme design and hashtag.

Can you…

• spell out the word ‘peace’ together with your friends using only your bodies?

• make a hand banner that’s long enough to circle your whole classroom?

• make a multi-coloured handprint wreath to hang around your classroom?

• make a peace mural for your classroom that expresses everyone’s vision of peace.

• film/record a discussion with your friends about how different cultures celebrate peace around the Commonwealth.

Stay engaged with the Commonwealth all year roundIf Commonwealth Day has got you thinking about peace, why not write about it?

The Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition 2017 will this year explore A Commonwealth for Peace, asking all citizens and residents of the Commonwealth aged 18 and under to express their ideas on peace at every level, from the personal, to the political, to the pan-Commonwealth.

One Winner and Runner-up from the Senior and Junior categories will be invited to attend Winners’ Week in the UK and all participants receive a certificate. The deadline for the competition is 1 May 2017. Find out more

The Commonwealth Class initiative between the Commonwealth Secretariat and the British Council also contains a wealth of materials for students and teachers, including videos, teaching packs, a newspaper aimed at young readers, and regular debates on issues of importance to children. Find out more
