Report on proposed internship programmes Report for: HR manager Introduction The purpose of this report is to consider the advantages and disadvantages of recruiting interns into the company. I have discussed the issue with a number of companies who accept interns and interviewed local colleges and universities who would wish to collaborate with us. Advantages There are several main advantages with regard to recruiting trainees. First of all, the costs of recruitment and the labour costs will be lower, since the programme will probably be popular and the interns will work at a lower salary than regular staff. Secondly we have the opportunity to train highly motivated graduates. Furthermore interns are often younger than our regular staff and we can benefit from fresh, new ideas. Hiring interns will also mean that we establish a pool of potential employees who have demonstrated their abilities in the company already. Finally, there is the aspect of the image of our company, it provides good publicity for our company. Disadvantages Most employers I interviewed agreed that the major disadvantages of an internship programme are that there is an extra workload placed on managers to train and monitor interns. Moreover, some interns lose motivation if they realise there is no prospect of full employment when the programme finishes. Conclusion and recommendation Clearly there are risks attached to setting up an internship programme but on the whole everyone agrees that the benefits would far outweigh the disadvantages and that we should trial a scheme for a limited period.
