“OPEN YOURSELF TO GREAT POSSIBILITIES”
If you have looked at the new strategic
plan “LCI Forward” you may have no-
ticed that “Engaging our Youth” is no
longer one of the Global Service Initia-
tives. This may have led to reaching the
incorrect conclusion that involvement
with our youth will no longer be an em-
phasis of LCI. I am here to tell you, that
quite to the contrary, providing service
to this population will be more perva-
sive, intertwining with about everything
in the LCI Forward Strategic plan. Be-
low is the column that shared all the
events I participated in April, whose
publication was postponed, to show
how our District is already accomplish-
ing this.
In the first weekend, I participated in
my second year at the MD- 4 Youth
Leadership Institute, again facilitating
the “best practices” interaction with the
Leo Advisors. Like the year prior, I was
amazed how bright, energetic, in-
ventive, talented and dedicated these
young people are. I was honestly blown
away by some of the service activities
they do with examples ranging from
T.E.D. – X talks to holding a “senior”
prom for residents of a senior communi-
ty. This was followed by the chance to
visit the Paradise Host Lions Club,
where I finagled to present their new
member recognition certificates as well
as a surprise award. When I contacted
one of their members, ZC Oney Carrell,
to set up a date to attend their meeting ,
he suggested that April 4th would be
provident, as the presenter would be the
Principal of the Ridgeview High school
who would talk about the Ridgeview
Rangers, students who do many com-
munity service activities. It was hoped
these Rangers could be a base to be-
come a Leo Club if the Paradise Host
Lions Club would be willing to support
their formation. The vote to sponsor
passed unanimously, resulting in having
another potential Leo Club in the pipe-
line.
The weekend following this involved a
trip to Selma to attend a meeting of the
Lions Eye Foundation. At dinner on
1—7
2
Saturday night, the attendees had an opportunity to hear from people without insurance who benefitted from
being sponsored by a Lions Club to get much needed eye care, be it surgery, laser treatment or injections. Two
of the presenters were High School aged females, one who needed a prosthetic eye after losing hers’ to cancer
and the other with an everted cornea. Each shared how getting treatment changed their lives and was truly a
“Lion for Life” moment for those in the audience.
Living up to my Energizer Bunny personality, I traveled up to Lakehead Easter weekend to be a part of an East-
er parade. The attending youth had a great time with some participating in the parade themselves, the cutest
being a young girl riding in what best be described as a “Princess mobile”. This Governor bunny kept on
marching into the Earth Day weekend, where youth who came from Etna, Weaverville, Willows and Sutter, com-
peted in the District Student Speaker Contest on the topic of “Is the Right to Privacy a Threat to our National
Security?” Although, by now I have seen several District Competitions, 2 MD – 4 (California wide) competitions
and 1 Area contest, I am always amazed by the maturity and talents of these high school aged youth.
Finishing up the month, I had the honor to induct members of the newly formed Live Oak Leo Club during their
Charter Night Celebration on April 29th. What a special event this was with one of the highlights being when the
Leo’s took a picture together wearing their vests, designed by one of their members. All the members had to
earn these vests, needing to perform a certain number of service hours with some of the Leos having earned
points by carrying the Flags of the Nations at the MD-4 Convention.
It was truly an amazing month with many inspiring moments that lent themselves to why Lions do so many
things to support our youth and why helping them will remain a high priority: they are our future.
District 4-C1 Information
To all District 4 – C 1 Lions,
I wanted to share a unique opportunity to participate on a committee that serves at the state level. This
committee position is an Area 1, which includes our District as well as C 5 (Sacramento area) and A 1
(Modesto area).
The open position is with the Convention Management Committee. If you like to put together events,
and work with a team of Lions to have things go smoothly, then this committee may be the ticket for
you. Unlike most open California-wide committee positions, the commitment would only be for 2 years.
As an extra bonus, you would not be assuming the Chair position the following year. How fun would it
be part of the preparations for the 2018 MD-4 Convention in San Diego! There is a commitment to at-
tend the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Council of Governors meetings, which may seem excessive, but is worth the time
to make the California Lions Convention a success. Those of you who were able to attend the
Convention held in Redding in February saw the benefits of careful planning.
If interested in this position or if you would like more information, please don’t hesitate to contact me
either by email at [email protected] or by calling my home phone at 530 934 5898 or cell phone at
530 518 7993. Don’t be afraid that you aren’t a “mucky muck” to be considered for this position. New
ideas and approaches are sought and valued.
Yours in Lionism,
DG Jamie Hart, District 4-C 1

Focus on Service. Globally and Locally
As we move forward into our next century as Lions our focus turns to service. As part of the LCI Forward
movement from International they have added a new global team leader, the Global Service Team Leader
(GST) who will work with the GMT and the GLT hand in hand to build a stronger District and Interna-
tional Organization. As Lions we are not new to service. It is what we do. And I would like to say that
here in District 4C1 we do a pretty fine job.
One thing I have noticed is our District-wide Endorsed projects are not clearly listed in our Directory, nor
the process in which the District endorses them, so we are fixing that. In order to streamline our efforts
and maximize the number of people served in our communities we need to be sure that we don’t duplicate
services that are already being provided. Over the next few issues of the newsletter I want to highlight
different District endorsed projects and perhaps our members might want to get involved in some of
them. We also will be focusing on some of these projects at our District meetings. The first meeting in
July we will be exploring and celebrating our new Disaster program. Chair Roger Fritter and his commit-
tee are putting together a great presentation and will provide the clubs with the tools necessary to be pre-
pared to respond to disasters in our communities. http://www.Lionsinsight.org
This is the website for this month’s featured Endorsed Project. I chose this one because, as your new
Governor I will choose a charity for any donations made in my name for any of the great things I do this
year for our District. At least, I hope you think they are great. Why Lions in Sight, you might ask? I have
immense admiration for what this group is doing for people all over the world. They bring sight to those
people who have lived their entire lives without ever seeing their loved ones clearly. They enable people to
work at tasks previously impossible for them, and for some it means earning some money to help support
their family. My big dream, after my Governor year, is to be able to have the time to go on one of their
missions.
What they do is big and they do it in a big way. Their warehouse in Vallejo houses thousands of glasses
and is open 5 days a week. They love to have clubs come down and spend some time cleaning and sort-
ing the glasses that Lions collect. If you make an appointment them they can even accommodate a group
on a Saturday. They provide refreshments and put you to work. What a great service project for a club!
The other side of the coin? If you have a health clinic or a vision screening coming up they will work with
you to get some glasses on hand for your event. Just give them a call or contact them through the link
above.
So, now Lynn and I are off to Pasadena for the Transitional Council of Governor’s Meeting. There we will
take off our training wheels and get ready to get on our bikes and ride! Then we are off to Chicago for
Lions International Convention where we will represent our District to the world. I’ll tell you all about it
in Lakehead July 15-16. See you there!

Leading Lions—Direction
Where are you taking your Lions Life? Leadership is not for those who go along for the
ride. You either have to be driving or supporting your leader with partnership and a pas-
sion for service. A leader is always trying to find ways to improve themselves, their fellow
officers and club members.
We are at the point for Club elections and the opportunity to step into new and exciting
challenges. What would you like to do or have you been asked to do. Those who ask you
to take on a roll are complimenting you. They want you to fill a position you are ready for.
At the coming District 4-C1 Convention, your club delegates will be voting for persons to
fill the district level leadership positions, as well as making decisions on budget and con-
stitutional issues. I encourage each of your club boards and memberships to provide di-
rection to your delegates. They should not have to make these decisions themselves.
We are all searching for direction in some way. What should I do? How can I help? Who
can I help? Who can we offer service? I recommend that you either be a helper or ask for
help in getting there. Your leadership can both use your help and want to help you find
your own direction.

My first year on the governor’s team is almost over. I was not able to visit as many clubs
as I would have liked during this year, but I am looking forward to catching up with the
clubs I have not visited during this coming year. I have been able to visit some of the
other district meetings and conventions which have opened up to me new possibilities
for our district. I look forward to working with our DGE Marianne Keesee and 2nd
VDGE Elisa Coyle. I think DGE Marianne has some surprises in store, so stay tuned!
I am in awe of our soon to be PDG Jamie Hart. She has worked very hard keeping our
district functioning at our best. She was instrumental in getting several grants to keep
us ready for any emergency as well as keeping tabs on all the clubs in the district. DG
Jamie was also the council secretary this year and did a great job keeping track of all
the business of the Council of Governors; all this while working a fulltime job! Thank
you so much, DG Jamie, for your service to District 4- C1.
It is time now to make a new flight plan for the coming year. Your district team is work-
ing very hard to be sure we continue to fly high. We will be looking for weather reports
from all the district clubs, hoping for fair weather and not a lot of storms that could de-
lay our progress or even keep us on the ground for a while. District 4-C1 is awesome!
As we fly in formation, each doing our part, we will continue to serve our communities
and our fellow Lions.
Looking forward to a great flight!

whole heart and a free mind.”

Leading Lions— Strong to the Finish
We are in the final month of another Lions Year, and a great year it has been. That does not mean we
sit back and let the year end. Try thinking of it as the end of a lap in the race of Lions life and the
course changes on each lap. This is the time to make a pit stop and reset our equipment, mind and
body for the next go round.
Thank you to each of you who took on a leadership role this year. That goes to everyone from the
Club Sunshine Person who manages a pen and postage stamps to our esteemed District Governor.
We all matter and do what we can in making our Clubs, Zones, Regions and District the best they can
be for our Lions and those We Serve.
If you are changing positions this year, think about the Lion that is coming in behind you. Help
them to take up the reigns and keep the team moving forward. Turn over your records in good condi-
tion whether they are paper or digital. Offer to be available to them for those questions you may be
able to answer. We don’t want those who follow us to be reinventing the position.
This is the end of my three year stint as Global Leadership Team Coordinator and my final Leading
Lions article. It has been fun and rewarding. Also ending is my four year position on the District
Budget and Finance Committee and my position on the Humanitarian Foundation Board. This will
allow time for me to work on the developing District Disaster Response Team. I will also be doing
project work on the MD4 Membership Team. For the next two years, I will be at every Council of
Governors meeting for the MD4 Budget and Finance Committee. Mr. Ferrier is going to be a busy
boy.
As always, if you need me, please call or email. My motto is, “Whatever your game, I just want to
play and help you win.” Just today, PIP Bill Biggs described me as a King Maker. I think that is
aiming a little high, but the idea fits. What is your game?

selves in trouble more than once on their jour-
