Visions for Subiaco’s town centre An Activity Centre Structure Plan is being prepared to guide the future planning and development of the city’s town centre and surrounding areas. The plan forms part of a broader town planning scheme review process, and follows on from the draft Local Planning Strategy that is currently open for public comment.

To assist the development of the Activity Centre Structure Plan the city is undertaking a visioning process to establish a common vision for Subiaco’s town centre and surrounding areas. As part of the process, three draft visions for the future development of this area have been developed

Three vision scenarios

The three visions show different urban design frameworks. Each vision builds on the existing structural elements of the town centre and considers urban form, activity and movement.

The designs reflect feedback received during the city’s Think2030 community visioning process, a town centre place making workshop, and the contents of the draft Local Planning Strategy. Heritage, character, and future high frequency public transport routes have

also been important factors in forming the three visions.

Have your say

The community is encouraged to get involved and provide feedback on the three vision scenarios, to ensure the plan reflects a shared vision, values and aspirations.

A community drop-in session is being held on Saturday 10 August between 10am and 2pm at the Subiaco Community Centre, 203 Bagot Road, Subiaco. City staff will be available during this time to answer any questions you may have on the visions and plan.

Submissions must be received by 5pm on Friday 16 August. For more information, or to have your say, visit www.subiaco.wa.gov.au/haveyoursay or contact the city on 9237 9296.

Improvements the focus of 2013–14 budgetCouncil approved a rate increase of 6.235 per cent, with a minimum rate of $707. Waste service charges will increase to maintain the current level of service and provide for Western Metropolitan Regional Council charges.

The city provides a discount of 2 per cent for ratepayers who pay their account in full within thirty-five days. As an alternative to paying the full amount, the option of paying in four instalments is available.

Highlights of this year’s budget:

• $4.5 million towards the citys underground power program

• $5.5 million towards road works, including major and local road improvements, street scaping and lighting improvements.

• $2.4 million towards park renewal and upgrades

• $1.4 million towards the drainage improvement program

• $414 300 towards playground equipment improvements

• $641 800 towards the city’s car park improvements program.

Detailed budget documents are available at the city’s Administration Centre, Subiaco Library and on the city’s website www.subiaco.wa.gov.au

NBN rolls out to SubiacoSuper-fast broadband is on its way to Subiaco, with works on the National Broadband Network (NBN) expected to start in the area from July.

The city is working with NBN Co and their contractors to accommodate the new technology, and connections will take approximately twelve to eighteen months to be completed.

For more information, or to find out when you will be connected, visit NBN Co’s website nbnco.com.au/rollout/rollout-map or contact NBN Co on 1800 881 816.

Place driven approach for Subiaco’s town centreCouncil adopted a place driven approach to planning within the town centre and the local and neighbourhood centres within Subiaco at its June meeting. The new approach to planning, design and management of public spaces involves collaboration with the people who use a particular space to discover their needs and aspirations. This information will be used to create a common vision for that space.

To assist the city in fulfilling this approach, a place making, public realm and streetscape plan will be developed for the Subiaco town centre, which will be informed by the outcomes of recent town centre planning activities. The plan will identify short term implementation projects that will guide future programs.

Beautiful gardens flourish in SubiacoIs your verge a landscape of native or water wise plants, or does your garden provide habitat for native animals or produce food for your family? The city’s annual Sustainable Verge and Garden Award competition is now open to all Subiaco residents, schools and businesses.

The awards recognise verges and gardens that contribute to the aesthetics of streetscapes, help strengthen green corridors and present features that contribute to sustainable living practices.

Winners will share from a total prize pool of $2000 worth of gift vouchers to a local gardening or hardware store of choice.

To nominate your verge or garden, or that of someone else, fill out a nomination form between Thursday 1 August and Friday 13 September. Forms are available from the city’s Administration Centre, 241 Rokeby Road, Subiaco, or online at www.subiaco.wa.gov.au
