We are fortunate to have residents who consistently volunteer for a variety of events and groups. Also, please note there is no January board meeting. Regular monthly meetings resume in February. The board normally meets the second Monday of every month and welcomes residents input and comments. However, in February the board will meet on the first Monday of the month, February 2, 2015. Sadly, this time of year there can be a higher number of burglaries, especially vehicle burglaries. Please pay attention to any unusual activity in the area and call the Naperville police if you see anything or anyone out of the ordinary in our community. Tips to prevent burglary are as follows: • Close garage door. Theft usually occurs because owners make it too easy for the thief. Even leaving the garage door open just a little is enough to invite trouble. • Keep doors locked at all times. • Maintain exterior home lights/install motion detectors. • Always lock your car door and never leave valuables on your seat in plain sight. • Park in well-lit areas. WHORESCUED

WHO?Pet TalesBy the Naperville Area Humane Society

Dr. Ann Hohenhaus, a boardcertified veterinary oncologist,

lists some of the important signs that can help you save your

pet’s life and detect cancer early.

1. Bleeding or discharge from any place on the body, such as

the mouth, eyes or nose, or in the urine

2. Change in urination or defecation habits

3. Sores that do not heal

4. Bad smell from the mouth or body

5. Difficulty chewing or swallowing

6. Loss of energy; reluctance to exercise

7. Loss of appetite

8. Explained weight loss

9. Swellings or lumps that enlarge

10. Lameness or stiffness

Please be aware of the above signs and bring your pet

for veterinary checkups on a regular basis. Also keeping

your pet at a good weight and limiting their exposure to

second hand smoke and other environmental hazards such

as lawn chemicals may decrease their risk for cancer. Early

diagnosis can help improve the chances of treatment

success, whether your pet has cancer or any other serious

disease.

To learn more about the financial and emotionalimpact canine and feline cancer has on local families, please attend the “Cancer Bites” adult educationseminar at the Naperville Area Humane Society. It willbe held on Tuesday, January 20 at 6:30 p.m.

Our adult education seminars are free, however

donations are gladly accepted. Space is limited, so register

today. Contact Terri Hancock, humane education manager, at

6304208989 x117 or email

[email protected] to reserve your

spot. Seminars are educational only, please leave your pets

at home.

Did you know that according to NCI’s Center for CancerResearch, roughly 6 million new cancer diagnoses are madein dogs and a similar number made in cats each year in the

United States alone?

I am a two year old cattle dog mix and alreadyI have quite a few stories to share with you. Iwas found pregnant in Kankakee County.Good thing they transferred me to theNaperville Area Humane Society. Shortly afterI settled into my foster home, I delivered 12beautiful puppies! Yep-9 girls and 3 boys! They all got adopted quickly and now it is myturn. I get along well with dogs and cats. Myfoster family even said I was house trained! Iam very sweet, but I can be a bit shy andnervous at times so I would love to find a calmhouse to call my own.

Yasmin is a 15 year Tall Grass resident. She is the mother of a 20 year old son and 17 year old daughter, both of whom have inherited her

love for fashion. To submit fashion questions, please call 708-822-0194 or email [email protected].

It's that time of year again, Pantone recentlyannounced its color of the year: Marsala! Here aresome descriptions of it: "A naturally robust and

earthy wine red, Marsala enriches our minds, bodies andsouls." "The impactful, full-bodied qualities of Marsalamake for an elegant, grounded statement color when usedon its own or as a strong accent to many other colors.""This hearty, yet stylish tone is universally appealing andtranslates easily to fashion, beauty, industrial design, home furnishings and interiors. " Leatrice Eiseman,Executive Director, Pantone Color Institute®

So what are your thoughts on this color? To me,marsala is one of the easiest colors to wear and itcoordinates well with many other colors. It's not a pure, bright red, more of a maroon, so almost anyone can wear

it. It looks good with almost all types of coloring and it also seems appropriate for all age groups. It'swarmth works well with other jewel tones like royal blue and emerald green, but it's also very strikingwith both neutrals and lighter shades. I recently saw a picture of marsala worn with a pastel blue, and itwas both striking and unexpected. Another interesting, and slightly more daring combination ismarsala with hot pink.

Marsala works well as both the main component of an outfit as well as an accent color. if you'reopen to giving it a try, think about a scarf, gloves, tights, or even a lipstick. If you're already loving it, a

sweater, a pair of pants, a skirt, or even a monochromatic look can be good options. One of myfavorite purchases this season is a matching skirt and top set in a marsala/maroon color.

You don't have to look very hard to find marsala in the stores right now, and it's available at a widevariety of price points. Give it a try!A Great Online Fashion Retailer You May Not Know About:

Ideel.com (formerly ideeli.com) is a retailer that offers limited time sales on men's, women's, children's and householditems. It is a members’ only shopping site, but since membership is free, all it requires is a quick sign up. My personalexperience with ideel has been positive. I find brand names that I'm familiar with as well as some really good deals.Shipping is a fixed rate of $9.95 for most orders, with a free month of shipping afterwards. Unless it is stated that an itemis "no returns", returns are free for merchandise credit. If you would rather get your money back, returns are $8.95.

I recently bought a set of cutlery that retailed for $250 for $69.99. Another of my favorite purchases was a set of 1000thread count bed sheets for $59.99. So obviously the deals are there if you can find what you want. There are new salesdaily, so it's definitely worthwhile to check back regularly.

Tall Grass WhispersJanuary 2015 7

One of the biggest questions that I am oftenasked is “How can I increase mymetabolism?” which is then usually followed

by the statement, “I have a slow metabolism”. The firstthing that needs to be addressed is how to definemetabolism. Metabolism is the overall process of takingthe calories we ingest and burning those calories forenergy for all our body systems. In order to gain onepound we need to eat 3500 calories more than we burn, and to lose one pound we need to eat 3500 calories lessthan we burn. This is usually over one week’s time. Soon average an increase or decrease of 500 calories per dayfor seven days will cause us to gain or lose approximatelyone pound per week.

The “metabolism” dilemma is one that usually dealswith weight loss, or with someone that feels that theyseem to continue to gain weight without knowing why. This causes someone to feel that they have a slowmetabolism. While there is always a possibility of athyroid problem, which should be evaluated by aphysician, many people that feel their metabolism is“slow” need to honestly evaluate their food intake andtheir energy output. Calories in and calories out is thebalance we need to either lose weight or to maintain ourideal weight. While there are charts to determine idealweight or body mass index, ultimately we need to achievea healthy lifestyle that includes a good weight for ourbody type, healthy medical status and an active fitness

routine. In order to balance our calorie intake and output, we

first need to look at what type of calories we are eating. Ifwe are always eating high fat foods, our calorie intakewill be much greater, and it takes more effort to burn fatcalories than carbohydrate or protein. Fat is 9 calories pergram, while carbohydrate and protein is 4 calories pergram. We burn carbohydrates first for energy, but if weeat excess carbohydrates, those will also be converted tostored fat in our body. Protein is digested very efficiently, and we actually burn a little bit more to thoroughly digestprotein. So a diet that has low to moderate amounts ofhealthy fats (more Omega-3s), appropriate amounts ofcomplex carbs (mainly fruits and veggies) and leanprotein will naturally be lower in calories than a high fatdiet. In order to truthfully evaluate what we are eating,we should keep a log of what we eat and how much of itwe eat.

Next, we need to address how much we are eating. While eating large portions and too many meals will addcalories to our daily intake, not eating during the day willactually cause our body to slow our metabolism downand burn less calories, compensating for the reducedintake. So eating healthy sized portions at numerousmeals during the day will help keep our metabolismworking efficiently all day long.

In order to actually have a tangible increase inmetabolism, we must exercise! We must incorporatemore activity into our daily activities (always consultyour physician, first). By moving and exercising, we areincreasing our calorie burning and also gradually creatingmore lean muscle mass. Having more lean muscle massversus fat in our bodies will actually increase our basalrate, which means we burn more calories just sitting atour computer or watching television than someone thathas less lean muscle mass. But we don’t get lean musclemass by sitting at our computer or watching TV, thatcomes from exercise and activity. In order to improve ourbasal rate, we need to do weight training and someaerobic activity. Both will enhance our fitness level andkeep us healthier from a physical ability standpoint, aswell as a metabolism standpoint.

So in order to Rev Up our wonderfully designed bodyand make it run like a finely tuned machine, we need togive it the proper fuel of healthy food and keep itmaintained properly with exercise and activity.

Longtime Naperville Resident, Ray Kinney serves as host of a local cable segment, Dine Around Napervillepromoting entertainment and dining options in Naperville. A small business owner, family man, and self‑proclaimed Foodie, Ray spends quite a bit of time dining out in his favorite place to be – Naperville, Illinois. In this column, Ray willshare his insights and opinions on the local dining scene. For a complete listing of Naperville restaurants, check outwww.dinenaperville.com

Ilove Italian food…it really is aweakness and Naperville isblessed with more than a few

great Italian offerings – one of ourfavorites is Traverso’s onNaperville/Plainfield Road. Great fordelivery or take- out, but the best wayto experience all they have to offer isto grab the family and head on out foran authentically home made Italianmeal.

Traverso’s opened theirNaperville location 1993 and theyhave been creating a loyal followingever since. The stand-alone building isvery nicely decorated, and as youwalk in you immediately know youare in an Italian restaurant – from thedécor, to the music, to the delicioussmells emanating from the kitchen, allof them proudly indicate the Italianheritage of the Traverso family!

Their lounge is nicely sized withample seating at the bar along withplenty of dining tables and comfybooths. A great place to grab a drink,a great pizza and a ball game – theatmosphere is upbeat and friendly, and with multiple screens, you cancatch whatever game you want. Hard

for me to NOT say this is the bestpizza in town – it certainly is at thetop of the list. Deliciously crisp thincrust is my preference, and Traverso’sreally nails it with their “PullmanClassic Thin-Crust Pizza.” You can’tgo wrong with the plethora of freshingredients and toppings to choosefrom – along with a gluten free optionas well. Hard to beat a pitcher of beerand Traverso’s thin-crust.

The hostess stand and a wallseparate the dining room – so you candine in a quiet atmosphere away fromthe crowd in the lounge. Nicely sized, they have seating for 90 – along with aprivate dining room for special get-togethers. One of my weaknesses isfresh bread, olive oil and Parmesanand that is always how we begindinner at Traverso’s!

Their extensive menu haswonderful selections to try and sharewith family or friends – our favoriteappetizers being Fried Calamari andProsciutto Ovalino, the kids like thechar-broiled lemon wings too. TheMinestrone is a must – traditional anddelicious, another great way to startyour meal. Paula loves the house

salad, a great mix of crispy romaineand iceberg lettuce along with carrots, cabbage and roma tomatoes – yum!The “Mama T. Handmade Selections”are all homemade – with familyrecipes that add authenticity andflavor! Emily loves the FettucciniAlfredo – but always adds chickenbecause, well, she can! My go to onthe pasta are the delicately decadenthand-made gnocchi, like pillows ofdeliciousness in every bite! Sara likesthe Mellanzabi Rollatini – sautéedeggplant stuffed with spinach andricotta cheese, baked with mozzarellacheese and served with – yep, morepasta! JR is a fan of the Pork ChopsVesuvio – expertly prepared centercut chops sautéed in white wine, garlic and oregano, served withVesuvio potato wedges.

One of the few places that hasgluten free pasta, Traverso’s tries theirbest to satisfy any dietary concerns –and that is greatly appreciated by mywife and family!

If you can leave room for dessert, the cannoli’s and tiramisu are a must!
