World War I The Aftermath Exhibition The exhibition at South Molton Museum through November (from 3rd) and March 2019 and will focus on local servicemen and women who returned home to the area after the War ended – what hap-pened to them, their work life, homes, and families. The exhibition will include photographs of local organisations and scenes from the 20’s and 30’s. Our opening hours are 10.30am– 4pm on Monday and Tuesday and 10.30am – 1pm on Thursday and Saturday.

North Molton Victory Hall Our annual Christmas Market is on Saturday 24th November from 1.30-4.30pm. Please come along, support your local crafters, artisans and local businesses by buying your Christmas gifts, cards & food from us. Meet your friends for tea and cake, guess the name of our Christmas bear, the weight of the cake and enter our lovely raffle.

South Molton Charity Fair The Christmas Fair in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support will be held in the Assembly Rooms on Wednesday 21st November from 10am to 3.30pm. 30 stalls selling a wide variety of goods, Christmas presents, cards and wrappings, clothes, foods, jewellery and many original gifts. Entrance £4 or £10 with lunch. It is 3 years since this highly successful fair, which raised over £7000 for Macmillan, was last held. We very much hope this event will prove equally popular.

shortages of food to the tragic loss of so many lives. The story of our small community is fasci-nating and has largely been forgotten. In South Molton Assembly Rooms on 8th-10th November 10am-4pm and 11th November 1-4pm. Admission free. Junior School Choirs and other musicians. Refreshments available.

Cuckooing Cuckooing is when a drug dealer moves into the home of someone vulnerable to store and sell drugs. The dealer will choose someone they can scare, bully and control. They will seem friendly at first. Signs to look out for: More people than normal going into someone’s

house People calling at all times of day and night Different cars pulling up outside the house and

not staying long Strangers who block off the doors and windows

to the house If you have not seen your neighbour for a while. If you are worried about or think someone is a vic-tim of cuckooing please: Phone 101 Tell your local PSCO Ring Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111

Help paint a picture of North Devon in the 20th century

Do you have memories you can share about North Devon life? Got any iconic toys from the 20th century with an interesting story behind them? Maybe an old wedding dress is gathering dust in the loft? The Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon is gathering stories and exhibits for the new North Devon social history gallery and there are a few essential items missing! Can you help with any of the following? Memories of working or shopping at: Brannams pottery, Derby Lace factory, Youings, Banburys, Torrington Creamery, Dornat’s Mineral water factory, Appledore and Hinks shipyards? Memories of Barnstaple Fair and Carnival, the old bus and train station on the Strand. Do you have any North Devon recipes? What games did you enjoy playing as a child? The museum also needs wedding dresses, wedding clothes and accessories from across the decades, from as early as you like up until the 1990s. If you would like to donate contact Sam Bevan on 01271 346747 or email samatha.bevan@northdevon. gov.uk. Pop in to the Pop-Up Museum at Bridge Chambers on the Strand, Barnstaple, Mondays to Saturday from 9am to 4pm.

N Devon Councillors help period poverty Councillors from North Devon have teamed up to donate £700 to a charity which provides access to free sanitary products in schools. The Red Box Project is a nationwide, community funded initiative to provide young people with ac-cess to free sanitary products to help end period poverty. According to research made last year by Plan UK, one in 10 young women do not have access to these products in the UK and 49 per-cent of girls miss at least a whole day of school because of their period. The grant money will be put into expanding the project enabling the project team to purchase more donation bins, more red boxes and produce more promotional materials to help spread the word. The grant will also be used to pay for a storage facility so that they can organise the do-nations more efficiently. The Red Box Project, works by setting up dona-tion points throughout the community where members of the public can donate sanitary items and pairs of brand new underwear via a donation bin or box. The items then get distributed to local schools. If you would like to donate any sanitary items or new underwear, there are already donation points in Braunton, Bideford and Barnstaple, the nearest to us is Sainsburys, Barnstaple, but the goal of Red Box North Devon is to keep expanding so that they can provide every school and college in the area with a red box. To do this they need to set up as many donation points as possible, so that they can sustain each box they give out. The project is run completely by volunteers who want to encourage the community to come together to support the young women of N Devon. If you would like more information please visit their Facebook page www.facebook.com/redbox projectnorthdevon or follow them on Twitter @red boxprojectND. Donations of money can also be made through the project's JustGiving page.

NatWest Bank NatWest’s Mobile Bank is now on South Molton Square on Tuesday mornings to 10.45-11.30am.

They’ve launched Crowdfund Devon, a centralised online platform that enables community groups, start-up busi-nesses, charities and individuals across the county to raise money to help get their project or venture off the ground and unlock extra funding. If you have a project that makes an impact to your community, supports wellbeing, works to-wards a better environment, rewards innovation or supercharges business ideas, then why not take a look? Apply and start crowdfunding and, if you fit the bill, the Crowdfund Devon partners could put extra money into your project to help you reach your target. How you can help rough sleepers? Devon and Cornwall Police, North Devon Council and Barnstaple Town Council are working togeth-er to highlight the work being done locally to sup-port rough sleepers in Barnstaple and North Dev-on and are appealing to the public for help. North Devon Council has a homelessness team made up of rough sleeper outreach workers, a social worker and specialist drug and alcohol re-covery worker. The team estimates they will work with about 130 rough sleepers this year, the ma-jority of whom are single, homeless individuals; many have complex needs. This generates a large daily demand for police and local support services. The team is in daily contact with the dis-trict's rough sleepers and engages with each indi-vidual to help them plan a way for them to get off the street and into better circumstances. Every plan is different and there are many barriers to be overcome, in some cases a reluctance to leave the streets is the barrier and when housing is of-fered, many choose to remain homeless. If you’re worried about someone sleeping rough there are a few things you can do. Buying a hot drink, some food or warm clothing like socks for someone sleeping rough can make a difference. Making a donation to a homeless charity, engag-ing rough sleepers in conversation or volunteer-ing time are other ways of providing support. Giving cash may seem generous, but providing cash can keep people trapped in the endless cy-cle of homelessness and rough sleeping, particu-larly for those who are also battling drugs and alcohol issues. If you are concerned about a rough sleeper, con-tact North Devon Council on 01271 388870 or email customerservices@ northdev-on.gov.uk.

Receive help to save on energy bills Vulnerable and fuel poor residents across Devon are being encouraged to apply for expert help to help them keep warm and reduce their energy bills by up to £300 a year. Cosy Devon and the Local Energy Advice Pro-gramme (LEAP) is a free advice service support-ed by Devon County Council and funded by ener-gy suppliers that helps households with energy saving measures. Once the application is accepted, one of LEAP’s expert advisors will visit and look at your current heating and warmth levels in your home. They can install a range of simple measures, pro-vide energy efficiency advice and help look for a better deal on energy bills. These can include draught-proofing, low energy LED lightbulbs, ra-diator panels and shower savers. The advisor will also check if your house has uninsulated cavity walls or an uninsulated loft. If so, it may be possi-ble to arrange for insulation to be installed for free. If your home has a heating system that’s not working, they may also be able to help you repair or replace it. The energy advisor will be able to give you free energy efficiency hints and tips and, if you have a heating controller, advice on how to set it to save energy. Your energy tariff will be checked and, if you are not on the best tariff, the advisor will help you to change to a cheaper one. You can apply now, for yourself or somebody else, on the Cosy Devon website. Alternatively phone 0800 0607567

Loneliness Analysis by Bournemouth University’s Ageing and Dementia Research Centre has revealed that almost a fifth of over-75s in the UK go three months or longer with no one to share a meal with. It can lead to health problems and a higher risk of developing degenerative illness such as dementia. And, of course, it can lead to chronic loneliness. There are lots of things that we can do to look out for neighbours and friends - and lots of people already do. To get involved visit

Seasonal Flu Vaccination Flu (also known as influenza) is a highly infectious illness caused by the flu virus. It spreads rapidly through small droplets coughed or

sneezed into the air by an infected person. For most people, flu is unpleasant but not serious. You will usually recover within a week. Studies have shown that flu vaccines provide effective protection against the flu, although pro-tection may not be complete and may vary be-tween people. Protection from the vaccine gradu-ally decreases and flu strains change over time. Therefore, new vaccines are made each year and people at risk of flu are encouraged to be vaccinated every year. The flu vaccination is offered to people in at-risk groups. These people are at greater risk of devel-oping serious complications if they catch flu, such as pregnant women and elderly people. Locally, vaccinations are available at Medical Centres, Pharmacies and Chemists.
