Message From Rabbi

Receiving an Inclusive Torah

Last week, I attended the Rabbinical Assembly conference in Dallas, Texas. Every year,

the rabbis of the organization take a public stand on specific issues by passing resolu-

tions. Among the resolutions passed this year was the "Resolution in Support of Access to

Lifelong Jewish Learning for Jews with Disabilities" (see full resolution below).

Within this resolution there is acknowledgement of the religious imperative to recognize

that every human being is created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27) and therefore inher-

ently holy, regardless of one's limitations; however, the resolution also recognizes that

there are barriers "in attitude and access" that exclude people from being part of the Jew-

ish community.

When I attended Camp Ramah as a camper in my early teens, I was first exposed to camp-

ers who, despite their disabilities, were integrated into camp life. This was called the Tik-

vah program. At an age when children are very aware of group identity, I distinctly re-

member one of my peers accepting a boy who had a visible disability into our group. I felt

relieved, understanding that such a welcoming attitude would extend to me as well. Little

did I know that I would end up marrying someone who was part of this program. As a

result of these experiences, I have gone on a journey of becoming more sensitive to peo-

ple's limitations. This process has enabled me to become more aware and accepting of my

own limitations as well.

On vacation, we attended a synagogue on which a Bar Mitzvah was being cele-

brated. The boy enthusiastically led the entire service and read from the Torah. His

blindness did not exclude him. He davened from a braille siddur and read Torah from a

braille chumash. After services, his father, the rabbi, asked us how many congregations

would be able to accommodate his son if they were to attend services there? When we

returned, our congregation purchased a braille chumash and siddur.

Let us take specific steps so that our congregation will be viewed as an inclusive congre-

gation that reaches out to people who have disabilities. This begins by adopting a willing

attitude to commit time and money to meet every person's needs to the best of our abil-

ity. Next, let us hold conversations among our congregants to learn ways that we can bet-

ter meet the needs of people who have disabilities. The resolution asks us to recognize

that in addition to people with physical disabilities there are also disabilities that are not

visible, i.e., autism, mood disorders, and learning disabilities. We have members who can

share their valuable experience to help us be more inclusive. By conducting such conver-

sations we will be taking the first huge step on this important journey for our congregation

-- being ready to learn how to accommodate the specific needs of all the people in our

congregation. For a list of additional steps see the United Synagogue's checklist:http://

www.uscj.org/JewishLivingandLearning/SocialAction/Accessibility/

Checklist_WelcomingPeopleWithDisabilitiesIntoYourSynagogue.aspx

As Shavuot approaches, the holiday that celebrates our people's receiving of the Torah at

Mt. Sinai, let us ensure that each and every person has the ability to receive Torah in our

synagogue, despite his or her limitations. The Torah from Congregation Agudath Achim

will be a Torah of kindness, a Torah that meets the needs of all her members, and a Torah

that honors the diversity in God's creation.

Message From Rabbi Continued Resolution in Support of Access to Lifelong Jewish Learning for Jews with Disabilities

Whereas a human being mints many coins from the same mold and they are all identical, but the Holy Blessed One strikes us

all from the mold of the first human and each one of us is unique (Mishnah Sanhedrin 4:5) and

Whereas the Torah states that each of us is created b’tzelem Elohim, in the image of God (Genesis 1:27) and describes the hos-

pitality of Abraham and Sarah welcoming strangers to their home (Genesis 18) but there are Jews with physical, developmen-

tal, emotional, intellectual and other disabilities who do not have the opportunities to participate in the richness of Jewish life

in Conservative Movement institutions because multiple barriers still exist in attitudes and access and

Whereas as the Torah teaches us, “You shall not insult the deaf or place a stumbling block before the blind” (Leviticus 19:14)

and when those barriers are eliminated many Jews with disabilities find warmth, welcome and a sense of belonging in their

Conservative Jewish community and

Whereas historically people with disabilities have been regarded in light of visible impairments such as physical, communica-

tion and sensory disorders, the Rabbinical Assembly recognizes that people can have disabilities that are not visible including,

but not limited to, autism spectrum disorders, learning disabilities, executive functioning disorders and mood disorders and

Whereas regardless of whether a disability is apparent or not apparent, the Rabbinical Assembly understands that because each

person is unique, accommodations must meet their needs so that each can participate in personally meaningful activities and

Whereas the Rabbinical Assembly, United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism and Camp Ramah have worked for decades to

bring people with disabilities into Jewish life such as through the work of the USCJ Special Needs Commission, the Ramah

Tikvah program and

Whereas despite all these efforts, more can and must be done to build a more inclusive Conservative Movement; we must en-

sure that our buildings, facilities and programs are accessible to all people with apparent and not apparent disabilities; our de-

meanor is welcoming and our language is appropriate including using “person first language” that puts the person before the

disability (i.e., referring to a “person with a disability” rather than a “disabled person”) and all Jews, regardless of ability, will

have the opportunity for meaningful participation in the richness of Judaism.

Therefore be it resolved that the Rabbinical Assembly affirms that access to a Jewish education, worship at the congregation

of one’s choosing, participation in USY, summers spent at Camp Ramah, attendance at a Solomon Schechter Day School,

making Jewish friends and becoming leaders of the Conservative Movement should not be limited by a disability and

Be it further resolved that the Rabbinical Assembly commits to creating and sustaining welcoming communities of meaningful

inclusion, enabling and encouraging people with disabilities and their families to participate fully in Jewish life in a way that

promotes a sense of personal belonging and

Be it further resolved that the Rabbinical Assembly asks its rabbis to find ways to partner with other organizations pursuing

this work in order to share resources and best practices and

Be it further resolved that the Rabbinical Assembly calls upon congregations to implement these programs to the best of their

financial ability and supports increased allocation for the funding of these initiatives and

Be it further resolved that the Rabbinical Assembly encourages its rabbis and affiliates to adopt Person First Language (e.g.

child with autism rather than autistic child) in all oral and written communication and publications and

Be it further resolved that the Rabbinical Assembly calls upon its rabbis to embrace the vision of a Conservative Movement

that spiritually, physically and socially welcomes, includes, accommodates and supports all children and adults living with

disabilities and their families by providing lifelong learning in all aspects of Jewish communal life.

BURIAL WISHES

One of the hardest decisions we have to make is “Where will my family and I be buried at the end of our lives?” Some

of you have already made a decision and others may not have. Usually the first call our members make after a death is

to the synagogue. Agudath Achim Synagogue has prided itself on its Chevra Kadisha and Mitzvah committees. We

want to be there for you at those stressful moments. To make everyone’s life easier, we would like to collect any

information that you would like to give us about your after-life arrangements. If you have a lot that you bought out of

town, a contact person for funeral arrangements, or any special requests that you have, please use the space below to

put them in writing.

If you have not made any future plans and would like to discuss a burial possibility in Bonaventure Cemetery or if you

have any other concerns or questions please contact one of the Chevra Kadisha chairs, David Reeves and Larry Lasky,

or the Executive Director, Motti Locker.
