Tanzania to Kenya with Jeff & Evi

March 4-15, 2018

Day 1: Welcome to Tanzania! On arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be met by a local representative and transferred to your hotel. Arusha is the safari capital of Tanzania located at the foot of Mt. Meru, close to Mount Kilimanjaro, the Manyara, Tarangire and Ngorongoro National Parks. Arusha Hotel or similar for one night.

Day 2: Tarangire National Park

Depart for 1,600 square mile Tarangire National Park, where you will have a full-day game drive.

After the Serengeti, Tarangire has the greatest concentration of wildlife in Tanzania and the

Tarangire River is a magnet for thirsty wildlife. Large herds of elephants and migratory wilde-

beest, zebra, buffalo, impala, gazelle, hartebeest and eland gather and not surprisingly the preda-

tors follow. This is also the one place in Tanzania where dry-country antelope such as oryx and

gerenuk are regularly spotted. Tarangire is also known for its spectacular baobab trees, and its

breathtaking views of the Maasai Steppe and the mountains to the south.

Marambo Tented Camp or similar for one night. (BLD)

Day 3: Ngorongoro Region Depart Tarangire for a game drive in Lake Manyara National Park and picnic lunch before con-tinuing on to your lodge in the foothills of the Ngorongoro Crater. Situated in the shadow of the Ngorongoro Crater the area around Karatu is perfect for exploring two of Tanzania’s gems, the Crater and Lake Manyara National Park. Lake Manyara National Park is a scenic gem, with a set-ting extolled by Ernest Hemingway as “the loveliest I had seen in Africa”. Manyara provides the perfect introduction to Tanzania’s bird life. More than 400 species have been recorded. High-lights include thousands of pink-hued flamingos on their perpetual migration, as well as other large water birds such as pelicans, cormorants and storks. Ngorongoro Farmhouse or similar for two nights. (BLD)

Day 4: Ngorongoro Crater and Maasai Village Early morning game viewing in Ngorongoro Crater, the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera and also one of the world’s seven natural wonders. Due to its size and diversity, the crater floor is comprised of several distinct habitats, ranging from forest, swamps, lakes and springs to open grassland and some sandy dunes. The afternoon promises an awesome experience - a visit to a local Maasai Village. (BLD)

Day 5-6-7: Serengeti and Olduvai Gorge Morning departure for the Serengeti with a stop at Olduvai Gorge. The Gorge acquired its name from the sansevieria bush that grows profusely in the area, named Olduvai by the Maasai. The gorge is about 35 miles long and in some places about 70 feet deep. Olduvai is one of the most important paleoanthropological sites in the world. Where an old river has carved away the rock to expose layer upon layer of volcanic soil, Dr Louis and Mary Leakey found the remains of homi-nids "Nutcracker Man", "Tool Making Man" and "Lucy", discoveries that have helped to fill some of the missing links in the chain of human evolution and added more evidence to the theory of modern man’s emergence in Africa.

The Serengeti together with Kenya’s Maasai Mara Game Park form Africa’s most famous wild-life park. The image of acacia trees on an endless grass plain epitomizes Africa for many, and then add a Maasai warrior and some cattle to the picture and the conversation need go no further. The annual wildebeest migration through the Serengeti and the Maasai Mara is the largest mass movement of land mammals on the planet – with more than a million animals following the rains. But that is not where the game viewing ends; large prides of lions, elephants and giraffes in grass-lands, gazelles and eland to mention but a few. Kubu Kubu Tented Camp or similar for three nights. (BLD)

Day 8-9: Maasai Mara and the famous Karen Blixen Camp Depart Serengeti for your safari camp in the Mara North Conservancy, a beautiful private wilderness area of more than 74,000 acres. It is home to a spectacular array of plants, reptiles, birds and mammals; in-cluding elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion, leopard, cheetah and large con-centrations of wildebeest, zebra, gazelle and other migratory wildlife. Leopard Gorge, in the heart of the conservancy, is famous as the setting of countless BBC Big Cat Diaries and National Geographic documen-taries. Bordering the Maasai Mara National Reserve, the conservancy is vital for sustaining the famous Serengeti wildebeest migrations and the highly threatened African wild dog and black rhino. Karen Blixen Camp for two nights. (BLD)

Day 10: Nairobi Depart for Nairobi. Enjoy a tour of the Karen Blixen Museum, Giraffe Centre and Kazuri Beads. The Karen Blixen Museum was once the home of the Danish author Karen Blixen, made famous by the release of the Oscar winning movie ‘Out of Africa’, based on Karen’s autobi-ography of the same title. The museum displays many pieces of the author's furniture and has a splendid view of the Ngong Hills, immor-talized in Karen Blixen's opening line, "I had a farm in Africa at the foot of the Ngong Hills." The Giraffe Centre is an amazing place to visit. It started as a rehabilitation project to rescue the Rothschild Gi-raffe. There were only 120 giraffes left in Western Kenya when the Giraffe Center was founded. The Kazuri Bead Factory is very unique. Kazuri means "small and beautiful" in Swahili and this describes each and every beautifully handmade ceramic bead which is shaped by hand by the women who work at the Kazuri workshop. The beads are kiln fired once, glazed and then fired again before being strung. Nairobi Safari Park hotel for two nights. (BLD)

Day 11: Nairobi Morning visit to the Daphne Sheldrick Animal Orphanage. After her husband's death in 1977, Daphne Sheldrick created the David Shel-drick Wildlife Trust. Embracing the conservation, preservation and protection of wildlife in Kenya, the DSWT today operates the most successful orphan-elephant rescue and rehabilitation program in the world. Afternoon game drive at the Nairobi National Park, located about 5 miles south of the center of Nairobi. The park boasts a large and varied wildlife population, amid wide open grass plains and a backdrop of city scrapers. Amazing! It is one of Kenya's most success-ful rhinoceros sanctuaries, home to the world's densest concentration of black rhinoceros. (BLD)
