President’s Message
The month of February brings to mind visions of Cupid, valentines, chocolates and beautiful red roses. My message this month comes from a story that was inspired by roses and friendship.
My best friend is a writer, speaker, editor and an avid reader. In addition to these accomplishments, each day she listens to her client’s stories. As a patron and friend for over twenty years, we’ve shared hundreds of hours of conversation. These run the gamut from excitement to tears and back again. Recently, I told her about a situation that weighed heavily on my mind. As I related the details, she offered me a book that might have some helpful insights. She suggested that I skim through it and then pass it along to the person I was concerned about.
This wasn’t the first time she’d asked me to deliver a book that might help someone. I thought nothing of it, but this time, the book actually had a different destination. It was intended for someone else…me!
She has real discernment and knows the right thing to say or do. When I need to find someone for home services, a doctor or a handyman, she always seems to have excellent suggestions. In this particular situation she knew what not to say. She knows me incredibly well.
As much as she enjoys reading, in that area we’re complete opposites. Had she suggested I sit down and read the book, I’d have come up with dozens of excuses not to. Other than the common complaint about being too busy, I imagined that it would put me to sleep. Once I have a book in my hands, my eyelids threaten to close. If by some slight chance, I open the cover and get past the title page, in a short time I quit.
But this time was different. This book invited me in, delayed my delivery plans, and to my surprise, intrigued my heart and mind. The other person would have to wait. After reading the first few chapters, I knew there was an unexpected purpose for its presence.
As I write this message, I’m more than halfway through and I will finish it. I may even read it again! It contains a life-altering message perfectly orchestrated to arrive at precisely the right moment in my life. The words stir and resonate through my whole being, vibrating with exciting insights about my personal life and my business.
On the cover of Necessary Endings by Dr. Henry Cloud announces, “This book will challenge you

to put a stop to things that have been getting in your way for a long time.” After only a few pages, I clearly saw the importance that “pruning” holds in every part of our lives, both business and personal.
He writes, “We begin to gather more activities than we can reasonably sustain. Some of them may be good but are taking up the resources that your best ones need. You will always have to choose between good and best. This is especially tough for some creative people, causing them lack of focus.”
This has my name written all over it.
”They create more than they can focus on and feed, they are attached to every idea as if they were all equal, and try to keep them all alive. Instead of a to do list, they have a to do pile.”
In its current state, the to do piles on my desk instantly convicts me—pruning is essential in order for my best to flourish. It makes perfect sense that not every bud will produce a vibrant, perfectly-formed fragrant rose. The key is to identify the average buds, prune them, and allow the very best to produce stunning roses.
It’s a good time to analyze your precious resources and determine to follow through by “pruning what might be good but not best”, “sick but not getting well” and “cutting the dead wood that is taking up space.”

That's a wrap folks! What a party to end what was officially the biggest Imaging USA ever with more than 11,000 photography enthusiasts here at the Gaylord Opryland in Nashville. We hope you all danced and had a blast with your photography friends--new and old. Now you understand why Imaging USA is like a reunion!
And we couldn't be happier to have you all be part of the PPA family. It's the third recap in a row, but we have to say it again--without you, there is no Imaging USA. THANK YOU!!!
"It's been an amazing Imaging USA here in Nashville," said David Trust, PPA CEO. "Seeing so many photographers here learning and improving yourselves and your businesses is what it's all about for us at PPA. Imaging USA is for you, and you made 2015 the best year yet."
More congratulations go out to last night's award and degree recipients. More and more degrees are being earned each year which means you photographers are responding to the call to raise the bar and BE MORE!

degree. "The record numbers are amazing but what's even better is the positive attitudes, smiling faces and photographers eager to learn and grow. I can't wait to see what everyone has in store for us at this year's International Photographic Competition! Keep pushing yourselves toward those degrees!"
It was your last chance to take advantage of the deals in the Imaging USA Expo floor and we sure saw a lot of you walking around with loaded bags and boxes. Thank you also to the exhibitors for making everyone happy! And if you were on hand for PPA Charities’ Dream Studio giveaway it was a pretty special moment on the floor. Jim Hoover from Michigan won the $35,000 studio and was rendered speechless and on the verge of tears. Thanks to all who donated! Entries are already open for the drawing at next year’s Imaging USA.
Things finished off with some more great programs, including one in particular that made this blog extra happy. Some of PPA’s guest bloggers, Mariah Ashley, and her business partner, Trish Gilmore, spoke to a packed house just three years after arriving at their first Imaging USA with exactly $79 in their studio’s savings account. That’s the power of PPA and Imaging USA at work! It’s great to see things come full circle for them. Who knows; one day maybe it could be you!
Tia Norsym and Regina Barrett from Chicago each attended the Business Basics pre-con class and were pumped for the knowledge they are taking home:
“I’m going home with much more confidence to start my business,” said Regina, a first time attendee.
Tia, a three-time attendee, said, “There’s so much new info, each time there’s something different, something new for me to focus on. This year I wanted help with my numbers so we took the class with Steve Kozak and Bridget Jackson. When I get home I’m taking the Square One financial analysis and getting started right away!”
Added Regina: “You can come Imaging USA looking for something--and you will find it.”
Incoming president Michael Timmons shared his thoughts on next year’s show in Atlanta.
“It’s only going to get better from here!” he said. “Next year’s IUSA in Atlanta is sure to be a great time. It’s in PPA’s hometown so it’s sure to be a great show with plenty of fun and surprises!”
And Christina Van Streen of Goose Creek, South Carolina gave us the quote of the year at the closing party: “We were going to quit on Friday; we’re not quitting anymore.”
We hope you all had a great Imaging USA whether it was your first or 20th. See you all next year, January 10-12 in Atlanta. Bring those t-shirts!

Sandra Pearce is one of the most sought out digital artists in the photographic industry today. She is a Master Artist, Master Photographer and Craftsman. She has had the opportunity to speak to thousands of professional photographers across the country from guild-level programs to state and national conventions. Her experience in digital imaging has set her apart from her competition and she has been recognized by the Professional Photographers of America for such talents by winning many GIA awards. She has been awarded Artist of the Year by the Florida Professional Photographers numerous years. Sandra was President of the Florida Professional Photographers in 2012 and has just completed six years on the Board of Directors. She feels honored to be accepted as a PPA Juror this past month.

Print of the Month Rules- Prints are to be mounted.
- Size: 8x10.
- Electronic Imaging size can be two 8x10 taped together on the back and spread open for viewing.
- Three entries per member each month.
- There must be at least three entries in a category for that category to be included in the monthly competition.
- All entries MUST have your name and the category you wish to enter on the back of the print.
- Prints must be turned in before 6:25 pm. Prints received after 6:25 will not be accepted!
Winners:- Please send your winning files
to [email protected] for the newsletter as soon as Possi-ble. Deadline for publication is one week after the meeting.
- Name your files by your last name-place-category. For ex-ample Smith-1st-Portrait.jpg
- Any resolution 1000 pixels on the longest side or greater is acceptable. JPEG format is preferrable.
