President’s Message
History has been created on the 4th of February. We had our
very first International Speech and Table Topics Contest at
TAR College itself! It was definitely another milestone for us
‘new’ club in town. It was yet another successful event run
by the Executive-Committee team and our dear advisor. Big
thanks to our members too who were eager taking up
challenges to participate and to test out what they had
already learned in Toastmasters at the contest platform. We
had a total of 5 members for both International Speech and
Table Topics contest. The turnout was great and the
organization was awesome!
Our record doesn’t stop there as we had two representative
namely Michele for International speech and Vincent for
Table Topics to represent TARC Toastmasters Club and they
have made it thus far in the Area W2 Level. It was the first
contest that our club has participated. Congratulations to
both of them.
March has sunk in and it’s the month of contest, contest and
contest for both International Speech and Table Topics all
around Malaysia. Are you one of them participating or one
of them who are helping in various roles?
As for me, these few months will be the month of
contributing by helping. In Toastmasters, it is not only about
you giving speeches but it is also a place to contribute and
play leaderships roles. Besides, you get to learn and observe
the more proficient speakers and you will be able to learn a
bit or two from them.
Want to be in the most successful, active and the ONLY
International club in college?
Soar with us and this will be the last thing you will regret in
your life as TARC Toastmasters is a great place to be as this is
a family where Toastmasters Are Really Cool!

Club Level – @ TAR College
The anxiety mounted and as the day drew close,
TARC Toastmasters had its inaugural International
Speech and Table Topics contest on the 4th of
February 2012 (Saturday). The pride of the club was
being showcased, The organizing team – its
chairman and the committee members – were
concerned about the contest attendance since
there were two continuous public holidays after the
weekend leading towards the contest.
However, they were pleasantly surprised by the more
than 30 people who showed up. The turnout and
support was amazing but even more amazing were
the speakers who were the shining glory of the club.
It was a delight to witness five “polished diamonds”
shining during the international speech contest. The
first speaker, Vincent Chow the club’s Vice President
of Education and one of the backbones of the club,
gave his speech with his title “Snake in the House”.
His vivid description of the scary snake of two men’s
height brought shivers down my spine. Like him, I too
have this phobia for amphibians. It is apparent that
his mom became the ‘hero’ of Vincent.
Daryl a former CIMA Global Challenge first runner up
winner, and a participant in the club’s recent Tall
Tale Contest, shared his experiences of “Making the
Best out Of Choices”. His conviction on the evils of
procrastination and its negative impact made me
think twice before I procrastinate finishing this article.
Watching Jonathan deliver his “If Not Now When?”
made my heart swell with pride. Those who had
witnessed his first ice breaker speech, with his many
speech crutches (use of “aah”, “uhm”, “err”, etc),
was glad to see how he took the bull by its horns and
secured a third place “biting nails and bolts” (if there
were such an expression!) with other contestants.
Michele’s “Life Is Short” was immaculately delivered
with a simile of the piano’s key board that stuck in
my mind for the rest of my life. She reminded me to
smell more roses and have a balanced life, which I
seemed to miss since I started work. One thing is for
sure. I shall need to remember to take life easier.
Change is necessary. If one does not change, it will
change you! Cliché or triad? Whatever your answer
be, Yoong Wai tells us that change is imperative and
compulsory in our life. His speech got him a second
place. He was one of the winning team members for
the CIMA Global Challenge together with Daryl.
The Table Topics Contest was conducted with the
impromptu but funny title: “English Or Manglish, You
Is Where?”. This contest was won by Vincent with his
message that it does not matter what language is
being used, it’s about communicating in an
understandable way. Michele and Kevin were first
and second runner up respectively. All three winners
agreed that English is the way forward and Manglish
should not be encouraged though having them may
somewhat make us Malaysian! (hmm it is indeed
paradoxical).
So if you have missed our meetings and contests, do
not fear for we welcome all who are not only brave
but eager to learn and believe in their inner strength.
Bring out your talent through Toastmasters. The
pathway to your life success and you will enjoy the
new found meaning of ‘clubbing’!

Area W2 – @Great Eastern Mall The Area W2 International Speech & Table Topics
Contest kicked off to a great start, with the
contestants from their respective Club-level contests.
In Area W2, there are five clubs: namely, Speakers’
Dream Toastmasters, TARC Toastmasters club, Great
Eastern Toastmasters, HP Malaysia Toastmasters club
and Pernac Toastmasters club. This also marked the
first time TAR College Toastmasters club participated
in the contest.
The contest was held at the Great Eastern Office
Block, 6th floor, from 1.00pm onwards on 11 February,
Saturday. At the same time, Great Eastern had
organized a Chinese New Year annual dinner for
their staff and managers next door. The sound of
gong, laughter and CNY disco music clouded the
somewhat quiet atmosphere of the contest. All the
while the audience were putting in their fullest
attention to listen to the speeches by the
contestants.
Even the CEO of Great Eastern, Dato Koh Yaw Hui
dropped by. Dato Koh’s handsome batik shirt made
him the most eye-catching person among the
otherwise plain-looking and coat-hugging audience.
As the trophies were right on the stage, it must be
hard for the contestants not to resist doing their best,
giving their best in the contests. The International
Speech contestants were as follows:-
International Speech Contest
1. ACS Lawrence Hoo (Speakers’ Dream)
2. TM Jeremy Phang (Speakers’ Dream)
3. TM Lee Yoong Wai (TAR College)
4. TM Michele Chang (TAR College)
5. TM Helen Too (Great Eastern)
6. TM Tan Yong Hao (Great Eastern)
The Table Topics Contest was next. It was a tight
competition between the contestants who spoke on
a very long impromptu topic that somehow sounded
convoluted, confusing and tongue-twisting but still
captured the essence of any table topic – Interpret it
in your own meaning and make it simpler using your
own personal thoughts and experience. The
message, if summarized, would be simply titled ‘Why
Worry?’ The Table Topics contestants were as
follows:-
Table Topics Contestants
1. CC Mark Lee (Speakers’ Dream)
2. TM Michele Chang (TAR College)
3. ACB, CL Vincent Chow (TAR College)
4. TM Jeremy Phang (Speakers’ Dream)
5. TM Jin Peng (Great Eastern)
6. TM Khoo Ai Vee (Great Eastern)
As soon as the contest excitement sizzled out, drum
rolls rocked the hall as the results of the winners were
finally announced.
The champions of both contests will represent Area
W2 in the Division W-level at Goldhill Club, Kepong.
As Great Eastern motto roars – “Life is Great!”

Division W – @Goldhill Club, Kepong
This is indeed a day of break-though,
not only old records were broken, new
trophy was broken too!! (Seriously)...
Div W Governor, Marian Lee, ACG ALB
It was hot and sweaty on this Saturday afternoon,
but no heat would tempt the Division W International
Speech and Table Topics contestants to strip off their
smart coats and ties, as they spiked up the heat
competing for an opportunity to represent Division W
in the upcoming District 51 contest.
If that wasn’t hot enough, our Area W5 Governor,
John Cheah, ACG CL outshined in his bright yellow
‘Chinese samfu’. Kungfu master in the house!
Division W contest took place at Goldhill Club,
Kepong from 1.00pm onwards on 17 March 2012,
Saturday. I was very fortunate because the contest
actually took place just next to my house, and I was
eager to listen to quality speeches by contestants
from Speakers’ Dream Toastmasters, MAICSA
Toastmasters, HSBC Toastmasters, Sai Masters
Toastmasters, and TTDI Toastmasters.
I was impressed with speakers like E Son Lee, who
took life lessons out of the man without arms and
legs, Nick Vujicic and laughed out loud with
Lawrence Hoo’s rendition of the End of the World
2012. Teo Soo Loon’s speech to ‘Smell the Roses’
taught us to appreciate living our life in its present
moment, but it was Dominic Teoh who was the last
speaker, actually combined all the contestants’
speech materials to make up his final interpretation
on the “Meaning of Death”.
One speaker that actually caught my eye was Lee
Han Sen from TTDI-TMC, who has grown so much out
of the close mentorship he received from his club
members. Vincent Hor actually told him last year,
that he was confident he would win this year’s
contest. And so it happened, he indeed won 1st
place in the International Speech Contest with his
speech “Not Good Enough”.
Table Topics soon followed after the good chicken
curry lunch, and the following speakers: Lee Xi Wen,
Guok Lee Lee, Dharma, E Son Lee and Mark Lee
were surely unprepared to speak impromptu!
The topic that came up was “No Choice or Many
Choices?” No topic was tough as all Table Topic
contestants breezed their way to get their message
across as they decide which is better – having no
choice or many choices. However, it was Mark Lee
who came up with the best example: He tackled
both sides of the topic, and he was the only one who
did that compared to all the contestants.
That it was good not to have a choice, and it is also
good to have many choices (albeit being single is
also a choice), but he arrived at concluding that it’s
making the best choice that matters the most.
Finally, the contest ended on a good note with no
time disqualifications, and everyone was happy with
the results that followed:

Bong Yang Bong Yang recently won as a Champion in the Asia
Cambridge English Speaking Competition, National
Level, held in TAR College on Tuesday, 17 April 2012
at College Hall. TARC Toastmasters is happy to have
the privilege to interview our ex-Toastmaster member
to share his opinion about the contest and his other
inspirations too:
1. Congratulations on winning the contest! Can you
briefly describe your participation in the contest?
All this happened by real funny coincidence. I was
just walking by college like any other day when Ms.
Val, my ex-English teacher grabbed me and asked
whether I was interested in joining and English Test
called FCE by Cambridge. It was sponsored by
college so I thought why not. The test was a full day
evaluation with speaking test, writing test, listening
test, grammar test and etc. I was glad to have
actually finished the tests given the long straining
hours. Eventually, I scored among the 7 highest in the
nationwide FCE test and was entitled the opportunity
to further joined the public speaking competition to
compete with the other 6 high scorers.
2. In your opinion, how were you different from the
other brilliant contestants that helped you win the
competition?
I think all of the contestants did very well and
brought different perspective and content to the
table. Personally I think God was the One that really
helped me in winning the competition. I had no prior
experience in public speaking competitions and to
make things worse, I started preparing for the slides
and the presentation just few days before (not a
good example). Despite that, I told God I really want
to win this. Throughout the whole process of
preparing, rehearsing, presenting and eventually
winning, I really felt that supernatural peace and
guidance that words could not explain. I guess the
biggest difference is that I depended on God to win
instead of by myself.
3. What's up for the next stage of the competition
after this?
I will be flying to Cambridge in July (screams!) to
participate in the Cambridge International Public
Speaking Competition competing with contestants
from all around the world. Really excited about that.
4. Do you have any speaking experience prior to the
contest?
Like I said, I had no prior experience in public
speaking competitions so I got most of my input from
Church, which little are aware that there are
actually many great "speakers" or preachers that
invariably sweeps you off your feet with life-changing
and inspiring messages. Of course, I was once a
"Toasty" and it helped me in my speaking quite a lot
specially in the technicalities of time management
and the boldness to speak impromptu.
12
5. What is the area of speech that you find hardest to
improve on?
The hardest area I find in public speaking is to keep
the tenacity of engaging the audience. People
have limited attention span and hence I would need
to learn to engaged them and draw out my points
effectively before they start shutting down.
6. Who is your biggest inspiration?
I don't have a particular person in mind but
my inspiration to speak come from preachers in
churches whom often received zero speaking lessons
but never fail to deliver dramatic, touching and real
inspiring "speeches". The most amazing thing about
preachers is that, their wondrous "speeches" did not
come as a result of hardcore planning and
rehearsing but from a natural sincere heart of
sharing. That never failed to amaze and inspire me.
7. Any further plans for the coming months ahead?
As I would only be furthering my studies in January
next year in the UK, I plan to work in TAR College as I
was given the opportunity to do what I like and be
where I love. I was actually offered a job to take
photographs and write articles about the college. To
do what you like and be paid for it, that's just
awesome.
8. Lastly, any lessons you would like to share with our
Toastmasters' members?
Firstly, always have fun! I understand the judges are
scrutinizing every move and syllable you make, the
timer is counting every second you take, and the
"Ah" counter is numbering down any possible "ah's"
and "uhm's" you slipped; but sometimes being
perfect is not the goal, the goal is to enjoy what
you're doing and have great fun out of it! Secondly,
as the motto of the country where most inspiring
speakers come from, I hold this motto dearly if not
more than an average United States citizen, "In God
We Trust"!
London Bridge, Here I come! Bong Yang will be representing Malaysia to participate in the Cambridge International Public Speaking Competition on July 2012.
The Need for Speed:
Bong Yang on his attempt at a ‘Prepared Table Topic’ Contest. It’s different from a normal Toastmasters contest because all contestants can see the topic.
Defining Myself:
Bong Yang with his Icebreaker speech on
26 March 2011 (wow that’s old!)
He speaks with full of wisdom, clarity and
maturity.

Intimidated to Volunteer as General Evaluator?
Fear No More, as this Formula Works Be observant and be able to express your
opinion extemporaneously. Sounds like
impromptu speech? Indeed...”
Some feel intimidated when told to become a
general evaluator, but contrary to your belief it is
easier than you thought and your fear is only your
own imagination. Most clubs do have a guide where
a list of questions shall be posted for you to answer.
However, some may not have them and this means
a chance for you to share your brilliant ideas, only if
you have done enough of general evaluating roles.
So what are the qualities and roles of a general
evaluator? To become a general evaluator you are
required to be observant and be able to express
your opinion extemporaneously. Sounds like
impromptu speech? Indeed, it is because there is no
pre-prepared speech when you express that opinion
of yours. Some of the rule of thumb that I coined with
includes (which is not exhaustive and it is only the
writer’s opinion):
Prior to the meeting:
1. Get to know the club prior to accepting the role;
remember to ask if they have pre-prepared forms for
general evaluator. When you know the club the
members and EXCO, you shall create a ‘family’
feeling atmosphere and that helps in making your
evaluation acceptable.
2. Observe the club’s surrounding and its meeting
arrangement. Though “L” shape is preferred, but
some clubs may not have the privilege to arrange
the tables as such. Thus, as general evaluator, one
should know how to improvise and suggest
accordingly.
3. Communicate with the role players if you have
exceptional request like assisting the grammarian on
some parts of the session that includes comments on
the grammatical mistakes etc.
4. Write your observation onto the pre-prepared
guidelines or on your own note book.
During the meeting:
1. Prepare your own notes on all speakers, as you
shall add value to the club if you can extend your
objective feedback.
2. Write your overall comments about the outcome
of the meeting, its strengths, weakness, opportunities
for improvements, great practices which you can
bring back to implement in your club etc.
During evaluation:
1. Craft your opening speech, because it is
necessary for you to present your evaluation like any
pre-prepared speech.
2. Invite your role players to report and remember to
extend your sincere gratitude for their support.
3. Conclude your presentation with your opinion of
the club’s overall performance.
So you see, becoming a general evaluator is
interesting and makes you learn faster for you are
sharing your experience as a means of returning the
goodness of a journey that you embarked which is a
continuous improvement path. Remember to take
the bull by the horns and get on to volunteering as a
general evaluator!
