Task 1

Purpose of music videos

To promote which leads to you being financial successful because then people will talk about it and then buy their album

Image and identity

To show off how their creative they are

Entertaining

Make it go viral

Styles of music video In-concert/’as live’ the band performing, either at a live show with an audience, or just for the cameras in a studio or on a stage

Animation either digital or stop motion

Interpretative using images suggested by the lyrics or music

Narrative telling a story

Impressionist a collection of images or footage suggesting a particular mood or feeling

Surrealist a collection of images that are designed to be strange or absurd

Pastiche imitating other styles or the work of other artists, normally to make fun of them

Parody similar to pastiche – copying someone or something else to make fun of them/it

Referencing including images that are similar to other texts

Homage a respectful version of pastiche; to copy the style of another artist/director to acknowledge their influence

What are the codes and conventions of music video?

The codes and conventions of music video very, depending on the genre for example in rock the music video are usually performance based and might have a narrative in it as well. In rap they usually have dancing girls and it is sometime a performance based. In most music video have a star image who is either the band or the artist and mostly through the video it always goes back to artist.

How powerful (influential) are these videos?

The most influential video was Maccabees – Pelican I thin the lyrics and video meant something compared to most of the other songs on there. I think that the least influential video on the list was Beastie boys – sabotage I think this because their video was just to take the mick out of cop TV shows and has no real impact to influence.
