Similarly, the number of West Indian immigrants increased more moderately between 1940 and 1956 to roughly 20, 000 people. After an initial decline,

there was a very sharp increase over a three-year period to a peak of just under 35,000 people. From 1960 to 1970 the number of immigrants dropped dramatically with some fluctuations to just under 10,000 people.
