What types of magazines and target audiences has IPC been

associated with over the years?• The international Publishing Corporation Ltd was formed in 1963, and following was the three

leading magazine publishers: George Newnes, Odhams Press & Fleetway Publications.

• 1800s: The Field launched in 1853, became the largest newspaper in Europe. Country Life, Horse&Hound, Cycling Weekly & other magazines soon were launched later in the 1800s.

• 1900s: Yachting Monthly, Cage Birds & Motor Boat were launched. Homes & Gardens launched after World War I, targeting people living at home and features of ‘How to wash at home with a machine’

• 1920s: Ideal Home & Woman & Home were published onto the market by 1926. • 1930s: Woman’s Own was the first full colour magazine published. • 1950s: New Musical Express -1952. & NME was created. TV Times also followed after the

arrival of ITV. • 1960s: Shoot! Was soon created to capitalise interest in Football due to England World cup

victory. Other sport magazines were published such as Rugby World, World Soccer and Anglers Mail.

• 1970s: Successful launches such as Aeroplane Monthly, Sporting Gun & Superbike.• 1980s: Marie Clare launched in 1988.• 1990s: What’s On TV made a triumphant entrance in 1991. NME was also the first major music

magazine to get it’s own internet site. • 2000-today: Magazines such as Nuts, Pick Me Up & TV easy

Why might IPC be an appropriate publisher for a new music magazine?

• They would be an appropriate publisher for a new music magazine because..

• They publish hundreds of magazines, so must be quite reliable in the sense of publishing a new music magazine.

• As they are the creators of one of the most famous music magazines NME ( new musical express) This would mean that they are experienced in order to be able to publish a new one.

• They have also created a range of different genres of magazines, meaning that they are capable of creating any new magazine of any type of genre.

What sorts of genres of music/types of magazines might they be likely to publish?

• The IPC would want to try and publish a magazine that hasn’t been yet published. They would want a unique genre that isn’t very common and would attract a wider range audience, which may appeal to a larger age group. It would need to be interesting, and attract to different people.

• They would also need to research and consider who would want to read about their magazine.

• The IPC would be well known for success in magazines such as Pop, indie, hip hop and also magazines aimed at an older audience.

• They would need to be aware of them not aiming towards one target audience.

Why might alternative publishers like Bauer be appropriate?

• Bauer Media is a division of the Bauer Media Group, Europe’s largest privately owned publishing Group. The Group is a worldwide media empire offering over 300 magazines in 15 countries, as well as online, TV and radio stations.

• Bauer Media is a multi-platform UK-based media Group consisting of many companies collected around two main divisions – Magazines and Radio - widely recognised and rewarded as being industry innovators.

• Our business is built on influential media brands with millions of personal relationships with engaged readers and listeners. Our strategy is to connect audiences with excellent content through our broad multi-touch point brand platforms, wherever and whenever and however they want. Our wide portfolio of influential brands gives us advantages over pure play magazine or radio competitors.

• Our magazine heritage stretches back to 1953 with the launch of Angling Times and the acquisition in 1956 of Motorcycle News, both still iconic brands within our portfolio.

• The seeds of the company’s radio business were planted in 1990 with the acquisition of London dance station Kiss FM (now called Kiss 100), followed by the acquisition of Liverpool's Radio City and later by TWC and the Metro Group. Then came the acquisition of Melody FM which was transformed into the market-leading Magic 105.4.

• In 1994, the company bought a small magazine called For Him Magazine which is now the core of the best-selling international multi-platform brand FHM.

• In 1996, we acquired digital music TV channel The Box, as a route into the small screen business, which has grown into Box Television, a seven channel joint venture TV business with Channel 4.

• Continuing its history of magazine launches, Closer was launched in 2002 and Britain’s first weekly glossy, GRAZIA, was launched in 2005.

• Today, Bauer Media spans over 80 influential brand names covering a diverse range of interests including heat – the must have weekly celebrity title, Parkers, MATCH!, CAR and Yours.
