Today, fortunately for our students, education has done a big step forward in the long way ahead. When planning activities, we can now take into account aspects such as multiple intelligences, different learning styles, critical thinking, collaboration, interaction, competences and connectivity, among others. Read and answer the following questions: a. What level/s do you teach? I teach only English at a Secondary School, but only the lowest level groups. At our school we split the English classes in 3 different levels according to their level. b. How did you learn English? I followed a theoretical orientation, with some grammar tasks and with few opportunities to produce or listen c. How do your students learn English or Content? We do a lot of projects, related to their interests. Sometimes they work in groups, in pairs, or in their occasions they work individually. They normally follow my instructions in English and try to memorize vocabulary related to the topic we are working at hat moment, and some fixed expressions. They rarely follow grammar instructions or tasks. They have a lot of problems to understand or use grammar rules properly. They work better when repeating and insisting on some specific structures.

LEVEL Secondary School, 2ESO and 3ESO but only the lowest levels

EXERCISE #1: Questions about learning a language We very often tend to teach in the same way we have been taught. Today, fortunately for our students, education has done a big step forward in the long way ahead. When planning activities, we can now take into account aspects such as multiple intelligences, different learning styles, critical thinking, collaboration, interaction, competences and connectivity, among others. Read and answer the following questions:

a. What level/s do you teach? I teach only English at a Secondary School, but only the lowest level groups. At our school we split the English classes in 3 different levels according to their level.

b. How did you learn English? I followed a theoretical orientation, with some grammar tasks and with few opportunities to produce or listen

(Go to the next page) EXERCISE #2: Language acquisition Go to the link below about Krashen’s presentation on language acquisition and choose one aspect that you think is important in language acquisition and explain why you have chosen it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0LpNpYxaXXQ

a. Important aspect in language acquisition: To give understandable messages

b. I have chosen this aspect because … I agree at all that when the students don’t understand you, they don’t learn, they don’t acquire the language. They are wasting their time and energies. When they understand the message they introduce, without realising, new vocabulary, new structures, and as soon as they are getting used to them, throughout repetitions, games, images, and other strategies, then, they can eventually use them.

c. What teaching-learning approach do you use in your subject?

Active learning when they are using real-life and imaginary situations in their projects. Co-operative and collaborative learning, cause I think learning is frequently most effective when learners have the opportunity to think and talk together, to discuss ideas, solve problems, without the constant teacher mediation. Technologies. Students feel very motivated when using technologies.

d. In this Module some teaching / learning methods have been mentioned. Add one other method that you know about or that you can find on the Internet and explain briefly. Using and creating Portfolios, such as blogs. Students collect, organize, write comments and publish a variety of student works, including papers, presentations, lists of vocabulary, images, videos, and so on.

e. What do you know about CLIL? CLIL stands for Content and Language Integrated Learning and refers to teaching subjects such as Science, History or Geography to students through a foreign Language. It also refers to the use of this Language when talking about other topics different from the Language itself, such as Projects related to the students’ interests.

f. Do you already teach CLIL? As soon as we are doing some Projects, related to real-life experiences, or interests, then, we are doing CLIL.

EXERCISE #3: Project based Learning (PBL) The most natural methodology for CLIL teaching is Project Based Learning. Project Based learning is a method of teaching and learning based on self-directed enquiry or problem solving by the student. To learn more about it, go to the link below, and watch the video on Project Based Learning https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MkTgfU5cSSY

Explain or enclose an activity that you carry out or that you would like to carry out with your students to empower Critical Thinking. I prepared a Treasure Hunt. It’s like a Webquest. The title of this webquest is “I want to be a Hollywood Superstar”. I show the different parts in images. In case you want to check it : http://webquest.carm.es/ Username: lidiallopart and password 102102navarra Click Mis Webquests, then click on Mis Cazas del Tesoro, and finally click on VER
