OVERVIEWA degree from Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning at the University of Michigan presents opportunities throughout your career. From the moment you join Taubman College, you have access to one of the world’s largest, most diverse, and most passionate alumni communities. In nonprofits, firms, and all levels of government around the world, “Go Blue” is a unifying statement of pride and recognition of excellence that will expand your network and open doors for you for a lifetime. Michigan alumni are well-positioned, highly connected leaders who want to help you succeed, and they are engaged in the life of the college through speaking events, Career Fair, Spring Break externships, and more.
This report reflects the outcomes for the most recently surveyed Taubman College graduates.
One of the great benefits of Taubman College is the ability to engage in multidisciplinary conversations with students from outside of the program. I was able to take advantage of fundamental planning courses within Taubman and partner them with other courses of interest at top-ranking colleges at U-M such as Ross Business School and the Law School. These allowedme to create a concentration at Taubman that focused on my interests.”

9,500 U-M maintains one of the largest alumni networks in the world with more than 9,500 living Taubman College alumni working in every state across the country, as well as in 75 countries.

CAREER AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AT TAUBMAN COLLEGE / U-M NETWORKThe Taubman College Career and Professional Development team provides a strong complement to students’ academic preparation, supporting students and alumni with ongoing skill development, search strategy, and career management. Dedicated professional career staff members work within Taubman College to provide assistance and resources specific to architecture and urban planning.
The Taubman College Career Network is a one-stop platform where students (and alumni) can connect directly with alumni who have “opted in” to serve as a career resource, find job and internship postings, schedule career and academic advising appointments, register for career events, and gain access to a wide variety of additional career resources.
Each year, the Taubman College Career Fair helps facilitate connections with alumni and employers from across the country who are interested in recruiting Taubman College student talent. The 2020 fair was quickly transitioned to a virtual fair due to the coronavirus shutdown, and the 2021 fair will also be online. With new virtual options, the fair will be more accessible to a wider variety of employers.
Taubman College’s Spring Break Externship program allows students to gain experience in a work environment, developing marketable real-world skills and helping them build important networking connections. Students are hosted by firms and organizations across the country.
Along with this major programming, the Taubman College Career and Professional Development team connects students with alumni through periodic Alumni Career Chats, Portfolio Reviews, and a new Summer Career Series by webinar.

“Taubman helped me explore and curate my interests beyond architecture and design. The skills I gained and explored during my time there helped me stand out and prepared me to teach others and help on various types of projects at my current firm. At Taubman, the reviews, critiques, and informal desk crits helped me build strong presentation skills to now use pitching design ideas to clients, principals, and team members.”
Coworking is 100% the most vital element of getting a degree. Taubman offered me the resources to build my coworking abilities through its large diversity and outreach programs like the Spring Break Externship opportunity.”

My dual degree in urban design and urban and regional planning taught me how to frame a problem and how to employ design thinking to solve it. I suddenly was thinking from a different dimension — like a planner in my urban design classes and like a designer in my urban planning classes — and I can’t fully describe how much the experience has meant to my life and career.”

As the first person in my family to pursue an architecture degree, I quickly learned the necessity of connecting with practicing architects. The relationships I built with my studio instructors and with Career Services during my time at Taubman College greatly helped me to reach out, establish connections, and ultimately find employment with an architecture practice.”
