Aims of the Day
• Start preparing documentation required for the course projects
• Understand why these documents are done
• Get feedback about the research plans
TAUCHI – Tampere Unit for Computer-Human Interaction
Schedule!
• Today / during ~a week: documents• In ~two weeks: pilots • Data collection after the pilots
TAUCHI – Tampere Unit for Computer-Human Interaction
Documents for the Projects
• 3 documents:– Informed consent – Instructions for the participant / script– Background information form
• Additional material required for your set up – Prepare on your own time– I would prefer these available (on at least
some level) when piloting (within two weeks)

Informed consent?
• Information which might affect to the willingness of participation is explained beforehand – Topic, purpose, and person responsible– What is measured and how– Duration of the meeting– Possible risks and benefits – Data use and storage, who has access,
etc.– Participant rights mentioned explicitly
TAUCHI – Tampere Unit for Computer-Human Interaction
Informed consent?
• Approval is collected beforehand– “Written consent”, “Informed consent”
• Video / picture / voice recording approval is collected with additional written consent!

Participant’s Rights – Self-determination
• Right not to participate…• …and to withdraw at any point.• There should not be any consequences
if approval canceled• Do not underline this as it may cause
nervousness / even fear

Participant’s Rights – Privacy and Confidentiality
• Treat all collected data in confidence • Do not connect personal information to
the experimental data• Inform how the data is reported
– On a group level

Instructions for the Participants?
• Actions of the researcher might affect to the reactions of the participant– The way the instruction are given can
affect how the participant behaves, etc.
-> the instructions should be the same for all
• For this course we will make written instructions
TAUCHI – Tampere Unit for Computer-Human Interaction
Instructions for the Participants
• Describe how your study runs in a detailed level, starting from the moment the participant arrives, until the end, when the participant leaves.
• The instructions should be so clear and detailed, that even another person could run the experiment.

Inviting the participants
• The invitation should inform about the experiment on some level – E.g., the topic, the duration, the location…– Parts of the informed consent can be used– Usually there appears a set of preliminary
requirements from the researcher side (e.g., handedness, no eye glasses, no hair on the skin…) – these should be mentioned and ensured before agreeing the participation
– Sometimes some instructions are given (do not use cosmetics before the study, shave your face, etc.)
