HISTORY
The Netherlands is a land of water, whose cha-racter is to a large extent determined by rivers,lakes, ditches and canals. This water must beclean and healthy if we wish to keep our countryhospitable. Moreover the water level should beneither too high nor too low, as this would threa-ten both people and their environment.
The Dutch water boards have been responsiblefor water management since the thirteenth centu-ry. The development of HDPE water managementand control devices originated from close co-ope-ration with these regional water authorities. Thewater boards have always been on the look outfor cost effective and innovative materials to helpthem regulate and control water levels in TheNetherlands economically.
These developments formed the basis of the pro-duct range that TBS supplies today. New pro-ducts are still being developed and tested in themost challenging environment possible, theDutch polder areas, where water regulation andcontrol is essential for survival. Almost half TheNetherlands is situated below sea level andwould be flooded if there were no defences.Without proper use of water-management pro-ducts The Netherlands would be inundated.
The flexibility of HDPE proved to be a majoradvantage in creating and providing tailor madesolutions. Once put in place these products donot require any maintenance and are reliable andeconomical solutions.
Today we divide the regulation programme intothree different sub-programmes.A) to block the flow to the height of the doorB) to regulate water level upstream C) to regulate water level downstream
TO BLOCK THE FLOW
SLUICE GATE PKS A normal application in channels is to block theflow to the height of the door.
In this kind of application the water level will notexceed the height of the door. In most cases thedoor height will be equal to maximum water level+ 100 mm as safety.
Closing the door blocks the water in the channel.The sluice gate is operated like a penstock with aspindle opening / closing the door. Sluice gatescan be operated by T keys, hand wheels, gear-boxes and can also be fully electrically actuated.

HAND GATE PHS For small sizes with the same function, handoperated gates provide a simple low budgetsolution. Direct manual force is required to liftthe door. Handgrips are placed on the door toenable direct lifting.
For larger gates (above 0.6 square meters) thesame type of gate can be equipped with liftingeyes, so that the door plate can be lifted with awinch or other lifting devices present on site.
TO REGULATE UPSTREAM
OVERFLOW GATE VALVE POS The device used to continuously regulate between a minimum and a maximum level upstream is called an overflow gate valve.
The product is always tailor made depending on the exact installation situation / dimensionsfor the customer. The customer defines the regulation height (dh) from minimum to maximum level and net width (db).
The regulated level varies between H max, themaximum upstream water level and H min, theminimum upstream water level. This range isdefined as Dh, the regulated height.
The door is lowered to regulate the water level.To accommodate the overflow gate door, spaceis always required below the H min level.

DOUBLE OVERFLOW GATE VALVE DPOSThe overflow gate valve DPOS has the samefunction as the overflow gate valve POS.
In addition to the above-mentioned POS, theDPOS product has the extra feature that thelower part of the construction is not fixed.
The DPOS has two doors. The upper door regu-lates between the minimum and maximumlevels, just like the POS overflow gate valve. Thelower door can be lifted.
Each door is operated by its own spindle.
Why would you require this DPOS overflow gatevalve with two doors?
The lower door is used to drain the channel intimes of excess water. Following heavy rainfall,so much water could accumulate in the channel,that the overflow gate valve could not handle allthe water. To prevent such a situation the lowerdoor can be opened / lifted so that the excesswater can be drained.
When both doors are lifted, the user has thelower door as free flow area. Both doors are lifted to height H min. If there is need for morelifting height you can also lift to H max level.
The consequences of making the DPOS overflowliftable to above H max level can be seen below.

On the left, the lower door of the DPOS can beraised to the upper door at maximum level. The upper door cannot be lifted to a higherlevel. On the right both doors can be raised toabove the maximum water level of H max. As aconsequence the total height of the constructionincreases considerably.
In enquiries it is essential to state the requestedlifting height (H min or H max). (See also pages4.14 and 4.15)
FLAP WEIR PKLSInstead of an overflow gate valve with a vertical-ly moving door, an alternative product can beused that has a rotating door: the flap weir.
As a result the flap weir can regulate fromalmost the bottom of the channel. The advanta-ge is that this weir does not need space toaccommodate the door below the H min level.
The doorplate and segments are made of HDPE.The door can rotate from H max, the maximumregulated water level
to H min, the bottom or minimum regulatedlevel.
Just like the POS overflow gate valve the flapweir regulates continuously between the mini-mum level (H min) and the maximum level (Hmax). However its construction is much morecompact.
STOP LOG PSS
Besides the possibility of regulating continuous-ly between a minimum and maximum level, aless accurate device can be used. This is a stoplog, for regulating flow levels step by step.
Step by step regulation is achieved by just put-ting the logs into the frame.
This kind of equipment can also be used as analternative for large sluice gates. The stop logcan be an economical alternative to stop theflow occasionally where a sluice gate would per-haps be too expensive for the limited use and/orwhere a sluice gate would be technically toocomplicated because of the large dimensions.The construction of the frame will not stick outabove deck level. Stop log constructions canalso be used in emergency situations and formaintenance purposes.

TO REGULATE DOWNSTREAM
FLOAT VALVE TYPE PVIA float valve has been developed to regulatedownstream water level. This valve operatesindependently, without any manual or electricpower requirement. The product has a proventrack record in the Dutch polders. It is always acustom made product.
We can design this special float valve on thebasis of the specific site parameters (differencein water level upstream and down stream - theso-called ∆ H value) and the culvert capacity inm3/second.
If the water level downstream remains highenough the float shuts off the opening with adoor. Only when the downstream (on the left inthe picture) water level drops, will the float belowered enabling the door to open. The watercan enter...
until the water level increases again and thefloat closes the opening. The PVI float valvereacts automatically to a change in the waterlevel down stream.
