SIGMET
Occurrence and / or expected occurrence of significant weather
phenomena that may adversely affect the aircraft operations ….
SIGMET.
• Active thunderstorm
• Tropical revolving storm
• Severe line squall
• Heavy hail
• Severe icing
• Severe turbulence
• Marked mountain wave
• Widespread sand storm / Dust storm
• Volcanic Ash.
SIGMET
• SIGMET warning is primarily an in-flight service to the flights
• Immediately transmitted by air traffic service (ATS) units
• Broadcast through VOLMET / D-VOLMET.
• Helps preparation of significant weather charts by WAFCs.
• Aids flight planning.
Main users of SIGMET are the airlines.
In the absence of ground based observations / forecast, such as severe Icing, Turbulence, Windshear, Volcanic Ash, …….
Reporting special air-reports by the Pilots to the ATS units and thence to the MWO concerned help the aviation industry and serve as database for Met. Forecast algorithm development.
Collaboration between the Pilots, ATS units and MWOs are absolutely inevitable.
SIGMET
• Concise description of the occurrence or the expected occurrence of severe weather phenomena that may affect aircraft operations within the flight information region (FIR).
• Issued by Meteorological Watch Office (MWO).
• The flight information centre (FIC) or the area control centre (ACC) of the Airports Authority on receipt of SIGMET warning shall disseminate these warning information immediately to all aerodromes / airports within the FIR and shall disseminate to the neighbouring FIRs as well to alert the aircrews.
• Sequence number of SIGMET starts from 0001 UTC of each day.
• Test transmission exercises are conducted by the MWOs (to check the alertness) as per the laid down procedures of ICAO.
Tropical Cyclone Advisory Centre
• TCAC is a Meteorological centre designated by regional air
navigation agreement.
• Provides Tropical Cyclone (TC) advisory information.
• TC Advisory (TCA) information includes
Position of the cyclone,
forecast direction and speed of movement,
central pressure of the TC and
maximum surface wind of TC.
Forecast position and maximum surface wind of the TC.
• TCA disseminated to users.
• TCA is used by the MWOs to prepare of the forecast part of the
SIGMET warnings.

Responsibilities of TCAC
a) To monitor the development of TC in its area of responsibility,
using geostationary and polar-orbiting satellite data, radar data
and other meteorological information.
b) To issue TCA in abbreviated plain language to :
(i) MWOs in its area of responsibility
(ii) other TCACs whose areas of responsibility may be
affected and
(iii) WAFCs, international OPMET databanks, and centres
designated by regional air navigation agreement for the
operation of aeronautical fixed service satellite distribution
systems.
c) To issue updated TCA bulletin to MWOs atleast at every 6 hrs.

Format of SIGMET warnings
WMO Header• T1T2A1A2ii CCCC YYGGgg [CCx]
• where T1T2 = WC for tropical cyclone, WV for volcanic ash and
WS for other phenomena
• A1A2 = IN for India
• ii = bulletin number = 31
• CCCC = ICAO location indicator of the MWO = VABB, VECC, VIDP, VOMM
• YYGGgg = Time group in UTC (date, whole hour, minutes)
• [CCx] = Optional corrections for already issued SIGMET.
x=A for first correction x=B for second correction and so on.
• (e.g) WSIN31 VIDP 101035
WCIN31 VECC 290755
WVIN31 VOMM 050210.
Format of SIGMET warnings ..contd..
First line of SIGMET
• CCCC SIGMET [nn]n VALID YYGGgg/YYGGgg CCCC-
where CCCC= ICAO location indicator of the ATS unit serving the FIR
[nn]n = daily sequence number = 1,2,3,… or A2,A2,A3.,,, B1,B2,B3,…

[ ] are used to indicate an optional or conditional element
< > for symbolic representation of a variable element, which in a real
SIGMET accepts concrete numerical value.
ICAO - SIGMET guide (2004, 2007, 2011, 2013)
Reporting geographical coordinates
The coordinates of a point N(S)nn[nn] E(W)nnn[nn] mandatorily have a space between latitude and longitude.
Ex. : N1303 E08016 S0530 E09000 N16 E088.
Both the straight line and polygon points are separated by “space hyphen space” format.
Straight line between two points
Ex. NE OF LINE N1020 E06510 – N1730 E075010
Line or Polygon
Ex. (a) S0530 E09300 – N0100 E09530 – N1215 E11045 – S0820 E10330
(b) S05 E093 – N01 E095 – N12 E110 – S08 E103 – [S05 E093]
End points of the polygon NEED NOT be repeated to join / coincide with the starting point.
Format of SIGMET warnings ..contd..
• The current SIGMET format does not allow for reporting more than
one phenomenon in two different geographical areas of the same
FIR (thunderstorms in two different areas of the same FIR), two
separate SIGMETs shall be issued.
• But, a new SIGMET for the same FIR would replace the previous
one and hence valuable information of the SIGMET issued earlier
will be lost.
• In order to overcome this sort of operational problems, different
sequence numbers may be used for keeping more than one
SIGMET valid at a time for the FIR concerned.
• (e.g., A1, A2,… could be used for “phenomenon A” and B1, B2, … ,
for “phenomenon B”).
SIGMET validity
• Not exceeding 6 hours, preferably not more than 4 hrs.
• Forecast (FCST) position at the end of validity time of SIGMET has to
be furnished.
• The FCST position shall be suitably interpolated from the positions
and /or movement (MOV) indicated in the TCA.
• For the E- or W- (i.e) along latitude (OR) N- or S-ward (i.e) along
longitude movement, straight interpolation can be done from „MOV‟.
• For other movements (NW, WNW, NNW, NE, ENE,NNE,…..), simple
knowledge of trigonometry and quick computation skill are desirable.
SIGMET issue timings
• SIGMET for the weather phenomena (other than volcanic ash
cloud and tropical cyclones) shall be issued preferably not more
than 4 hours before the expected time of occurrence of the
significant weather phenomenon.
• However, in respect of volcanic ash cloud or tropical cyclones,
SIGMET should be issued up to 12 hours prior to the
commencement of validity period or as soon as practicable if
such an advance warning of the existence of these phenomena is
not available.
• SIGMETs can be cancelled when the phenomenon is either no
longer occurring or expected to occur.
SIGMET dissemination
SIGMET messages shall be disseminated to
neighbouring FIRs/ MWOs
World Area Forecast Centres (WAFC),
International OPMET banks and
to other meteorological offices
in accordance with regional air navigation agreement.
SIGMET on volcanic ash shall also be disseminated to VAACs.

Proposed changes in TCA bulletin
• Unlike in Volcanic Ash advisory, there is no provision to mention
time of observation.
• TCAC New Delhi is furnishing the time of observation at DTG
(and the issue time in IST at the end of the TCAC bulletin).
• ICAO is now considering to include the time of observation as a
separate group as suggested by some TCACs.
• Existing TCA numbering sequence to accommodate beyond 99
(in case TCA is issued at frequent interval say 3 hrs) .. (i.e) „NR‟
from existing 2 digits (nn) to 4 digits similar to VCA (nnnn/nnnn).
• ICAO is now considering to
include Intensity of the TC
include Radius and vertical extent of CB cloud around TC
FCST position need not to coincide with end time of validity
depict CB in a polygon and not as a circle.
