In addition, Hamilton discusses organ technique, registration and the organization of the church service. ‘Manuals only’ music is explored as well as music for pianists new to the organ or beginning organ students who are just commencing church work. While Minister of Music at New York City’s Church of the Holy Trinity (Episcopal) from 1991-2011 and Chapel Organist at Columbia University, Hamilton served on the faculties of Hunter College, Manhattan School of Music, and Queens College. Now residing in Minneapolis, Hamilton continues to concertize internationally along with teaching and presenting workshops and masterclasses. Sound Advice: Musicians’ Ears - Practicing for Healthy Hearing This presentation, by an esteemed panel from the Mayo Clinic Department of Otolaryngology will address healthy hearing practices as well as how to protect and preserve hearing. Q&A to follow presentation. Cynthia Hogan graduated from Clarion University (PA) with a B.S. in Speech Pathology and Audiology, obtained a M.S. in Communicative Disorders from Pennsylvania State and a Doctorate in Audiology from Syracuse University. Currently, she is an Audiologist at the Mayo Clinic. James Holt completed residency training in Otolaryngology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. Now retired from medical practice and surgical treatment of ear diseases, he is a member of the Chippewa Valley AGO, an organ student of Kathrine Handford, and a devoted listener of Pipedreams®. Neil Patel graduated from Duke University with a degree in biomedical engineering and received his M.D. from the University of Illinois subsequently pursuing residency training in Otolaryngology at Mayo Clinic. Dr. Patel stayed on to be the first neurotology fellow at Mayo and is currently in his first of a two-year fellowship performing surgery for hearing loss, balance disorders, and tumors of the ear and brain. Sacred Art Tour & Lunch After enjoying a catered lunch with colleagues and friends, take in the Westminster Gallery (est. 2002) which exhibits and collects religious and secular art representing diverse ethnic and cultural traditions. Featured art is from the Westminster collection, private collections, and from regional and nationally known artists who demonstrate the connection between art and how it informs faith practices. Clarence Mader (1904-1971): An American Renaissance Man Jacob Benda will discuss the life of Clarence Mader who is widely recognized as an influential teacher, prolific composer, visual artist, poet, and organ consultant. Mader's distinctive writing style will be demonstrated as Jacob performs a variety of his compositions for solo organ: Fanfare Prelude, Bell Serenade, October Interlude, Fangle, A Passiontide Fantasy, Concerto for Organ (excerpts), and Afternoon of a Toad. Currently serving as the Director of Music and Liturgy at Nativity of Mary Catholic Church in the Twin Cities, Jacob Benda earned his Doctor of Musical Arts Degree from Louisiana State University in 2015. His debut recording, Music at Midnight: A Tonal Palette, was released on the Centaur Label in 2014; it is the first commercial recording to feature, exclusively, organ music by Clarence Mader. Dr. Benda has given lectures on the life and music of Mader at Yale University, and at the 2014 American Guild of Organists National Convention held in Boston, MA. Pipedreams ® Travelogue Slideshow Michael Barone and Lise Schmidt share glimpses of intriguing instruments visited during various organ-focused adventures abroad. Building upon a curiosity which began in his teens, Michael Barone has been involved with the pipe organ for more than 50 years. As host and senior executive producer of Pipedreams, he is recognized nationally for his outstanding contributions to the world of organ music. Michael’s talent and commitment have been recognized with numerous awards, including the American Guild of Organists President’s Award, the Distinguished Service Award of the Organ Historical Society, and the ASCAP-Deems Taylor Award. In 2002, he was selected for induction to the Minnesota Music Hall of Fame. Stephen Hamilton in Concert Venture to St. Mark’s Episcopal Cathedral (519 Oak Grove Street, Minneapolis) at 7:30 PM to hear virtuoso Stephen Hamilton play Bach, Franck, Ginastera (Toccata, Villancico & Fugue), Messiaen (L’Ascension) and Dupré on the Foley-Baker Pipe Organ. Free will donation encouraged, sponsored by St. Mark’s Episcopal Cathedral Music Series. The New York Times writes, “Hamilton, as organist at the Church of the Holy Trinity (Episcopal) obviously knew the instrument’s sonorous capabilities and brought them powerfully to bear in a rousing account.” Performance highlights include concerts in London’s Westminster Abbey and Saint Paul Cathedral, Paris’ Notre Dame Cathedral, Edinburgh’s St. Giles Cathedral, San Francisco’s Grace Cathedral, Washington National Cathedral and St. John the Divine (NYC).
