Kistler Lineas® Quartz Sensors in the road link to TDC’s HI-TRAC® 100+ WIM/ANPR System

Installation in Port Alegre, Brazil with MEAS class 1 Piezo Polymer

Roadtrax® BL Sensors

2014 contract wins include the supply of more than

300 EMU3 systems to South America

SOLUTIONS Weigh-in-MotionWith installations in more than 50 countries TDC is internationally recognised as a leader in high and low speed Weigh-in-Motion systems.

Road damage caused by overloaded vehicles is a serious threat to road infrastructure and poses a safety hazard to all motorists. Surveillance of heavy vehicles and enforcement of overweight

vehicles is becoming increasingly important. Weigh-In-Motion enables road operators to systematically check vehicle weight at full driving speed and enforce weight limits.

High Speed WIMTDC’s HI-TRAC® range of High Speed WIM systems are installed along highways to weigh vehicles at normal highway speeds (20-120kph) which detect, count and classify vehicles from 5kph-200kph. They can achieve accuracies to COST 323 Class B(10) +/-10% Gross Weight at 95% Confidence.

The HI-TRAC® 100+ WIM System can connect to eight lanes of WIM sensors and has a long and excellent track record. This is being used in Saudi Arabia to help the Ministry of Transport protect their bridges and highways from the damage caused by overloaded vehicles (see case studies for more info). TDC has integratated Kistler Lineas® Quartz WIM Sensors with the HI-TRAC® 100+ WIM/ANPR System to provide the accuracy needed to identify and weigh vehicles within very high enforcement tolerances.

The HI-TRAC® EMU3 WIM & Classification SystemThe EMU3 is both a highly accurate Weigh-in-Motion and real-time Vehicle Classification System that uses low cost renewable energy supplies. This makes the location of roadside installation flexible rather than being dictated by the availability of power supply connections.

Its integrated communications module with GPS and unique sensor interface card enable accurate vehicle, Weigh-in-Motion and classification data to be sent in real time, every five minutes from the roadside to the command centre. In practice, the system is able to operate wherever a mobile phone service is available and can record motorcycles at the same time as weighing a Heavy Goods Vehicle.

Low Speed WIMLow Speed Weigh-in-Motion systems are installed in controlled environments such as vehicle weight enforcement and inspection stations where the vehicle speed is controlled to approximately 5kph.

Accuracies to +/-1% are achievable providing the axle weigh bridge is installed in a concrete weigh lane constructed to TDC specifications. Automatic vehicle classification allows for immediate indication of vehicle overload dependant upon vehicle class and legal local weight limits.

The LO-TRAC® 300This system is a configurable, multi-function, Vehicle Axle Weighing System. It measures axle and gross vehicle weights either statically or dynamically providing either enforcement of vehicle weight limits for government authorities or overload prevention for transport companies.

The LO-TRAC® 300 is designed to be configurable and can be supplied as a basic control unit interfacing to the TDC Axle Weighbeam WB30L. It can provide axle weight and gross weight data or with additional interfaces can provide full vehicle weight enforcement functions.

TDC’s HI-TRAC® BLUE Pedestrian

& Crowd Monitoring System was used at

London 2012 Olympics & Paralympic Games

SOLUTIONS Bluetooth™ MonitoringThe system detects anonymous Bluetooth™ signals transmitted by visible Bluetooth™ devices located inside vehicles.

The New Compact Design 2014 - see product data on page 54

HI-TRAC®BLUE Traffic MonitoringThe system detects anonymous Bluetooth™ signals transmitted by visible Bluetooth™ devices located inside vehicles. This data is then used to calculate traffic journey times and movements. It’s robust and reliable design, ultra low power consumption and extended battery life make it the preferred Bluetooth™ traffic survey tool for leading Traffic Survey Companies.

In practice a HI-TRAC® BLUE unit reads the unique MAC address of visible Bluetooth™ devices that are passing the system. These include mobile phones, PDAs, hands-free kits, GPS onboard units and laptops. The MAC address data is transmitted by the HI-TRAC® BLUE via GPRS or cabled Ethernet TCP/IP connection to a central server and database. MAC addresses from other HI-TRAC® BLUE systems are then matched to determine traffic journey times and movements.

■ Journey times for long & short distances ■ Origin & destination traffic matrix ■ Alternative route planning ■ On-line real-time traffic information can be used to

update Variable Message Signs ■ Supports traffic schemes designed to reduce

congestion & CO2 emissions

HI-TRAC®BLUE Pedestrian and Crowd MonitoringThe system detects anonymous Bluetooth™ signals transmitted by visible Bluetooth™ devices carried by pedestrians. This calculates real time data including, crowd numbers and behaviours. It was used during the London 2012 Olympic Games around key venues and transport destinations transmitting data every 5 minutes via GPRS to a central server. This produced a picture of how many people were going to and from venues, how long they stayed at each one and what their travel habits were which in turn helped inform venue and transport management decision making.

■ Temporary or permanent system ■ Journey and queuing times ■ Pedestrian and crowd numbers ■ Movements to and from destinations ■ Length of stay at key points ■ Travel habits ■ On-line real-time dashboard provides pedestrian

crowd intelligence and can be used to update Variable Message Signs

■ Helps reduce congestion in and around venues and events

■ Informs transport management decisions

TDC’s Axle Classifier System uses 2 piezo electric

sensors per traffic lane to classify the vehicle

using axle number and wheelbase

SOLUTIONS Traffic Counters & ClassifiersTDC Systems offers a complete range of Automatic Vehicle Counter (AVC) Classifiers

OUR ProductsThis range includes: volumetric counters, loop profiling counter classifiers, axle classifiers, hand-held data loggers and non-intrusive counter classifiers.

Inductive Loop Counting and Classification(HI-TRAC® UTC-L, HI-TRAC® EMU2/3, HI-TRAC® TMU2)For volumetric counting one inductive loop is installed per traffic lane. Volumetric Counters provide volume count and per vehicle information including time and headway. A basic classification algorithm can distinguish several classes of vehicle. With loop profiling classification two inductive loops are installed per traffic lane. This provides vehicle counting and classification to Euro6 (or similar) vehicle classification specifications.

TDC Systems’ HI-TRAC® range of Loop Counter ClassifiersThese use established loop sensor technology with TDC Systems’ advanced loop profiling function to detect mixed traffic, recording vehicle speed, length, classification, gap and headway. Our HI-TRAC® Loop Counter Classifiers can also provide statistical data to show the pattern of highway traffic - helpful in monitoring events and detecting incidents.

Axle Classifiers (HI-TRAC® UTC-P, HI-TRAC® WIM,

HI-TRAC® TMU4)The TDC range of axle classifiers use two piezo electric sensors per traffic lane. They provide a low cost solution for vehicle counting and classification to UK Department for Transport (DfT) 20 Class Scheme, FHWA 13 Category Scheme, AUSTROADS or similar specification. A road inductive loop installation is optional and has the added benefit of providing loop profiling chassis signature analysis.

HI-TRAC® EMU3Counter Classifier and Weigh-in-Motion System

The EMU3 provides national roads authorities that require real-time traffic data on all road users with highly accurate vehicle classification and weight recording via telemetry. It uses low cost renewable energy supplies which makes the location of roadside installation flexible rather than being dictated by a power supply connection. The EMU3 systems integrated communications module with GPS and unique sensor interface card enable accurate vehicle WIM and Classification data to be sent in real time, every five minutes from the roadside to the command centre. In practice, the system is able to operate wherever a mobile phone service is available and can record motorcycles at the same time as weighing a Heavy Goods Vehicle.

HI-TRAC®CMU Green LightPriority System

TDC have successfully tested the HI-TRAC® CMU Green Light Priority System in Copenhagen for a traffic signal priority scheme. Eye-level cycle priority lights were incorporated into existing traffic signals and linked to the CMU unit and new split piezo sensor detection technology to give cyclists an early start ahead of the traffic. This system is widely used in continental Europe so that cyclists can clear junctions swiftly and avoid mixing with heavy goods vehicles.

NEW PRODUCT INNOVATIONS FOR 2014OVER 250 SYSTEMS DEPLOYED INTERNATIONALLY

SOLUTIONS Cycle & Pedestrian DetectionTDC’s HI-TRAC® CMU Cycle Monitors have been installed across the UK and TDC is proud to launch two new exciting products inspired by the cycle revolution taking hold across Europe.

HI-TRAC®CMU Cycle MonitorThe success of TDC’s HI-TRAC® CMU is evident across the UK where it has been rolled out by many local authorities including Transport for Greater Manchester, Derbyshire County Council and Derby City Council. Its reputation soon spread across Europe and led to TDC being invited to take part in a traffic signal cycle priority scheme in Copenhagen, Denmark.

This first product in the CMU range is a small, low power, low cost electronic system that traditionally monitored up to two cycle lanes and two pedestrian lanes. It uses piezo electric sensor technology to detect bicycles in dedicated cycle ways or mixed traffic lanes and features pyroelectric infrared sensors to detect pedestrians. Now, with TDC’s latest design innovations, the CMU can monitor up to four cycle lanes.

Unique algorithms developed by TDC Systems measure the axle count, speed and wheelbase to distinguish true bicycles from other traffic such as children’s scooters, prams, trolleys, motorbikes and mopeds.

The HI-TRAC® CMU unit is sealed to IP68. It can be fitted into a small pillar or housed in exsisting street furniture.

TDC can configure the HI-TRAC® CMU to automatically transmit traffic data through GPRS to a web server for secure data storage to a database. GSM dial-up communication is also supported.

HI-TRAC®CMU Cluster SensorThis innovative combination of the new cycle cluster sensor and HI-TRAC® CMU cycle monitoring unit with specially designed algorithms, provides accurate cycle detection in locations of dense cycle traffic. The unit provides highly accurate cycle path traffic data collection as well as mixed traffic cycle detection.

■ Accurate cycle detection in dense cycle traffic areas ■ Detects individual cycles in a cluster ■ Accurate wheelbase, speed, gap headway

measurement ■ Distinguishes cycles from other cycle path traffic ■ On-line dashboard provides cycle intelligence such as

cycle flow & trends ■ Informs cycle traffic management decisions

■ New split piezo sensor technology ■ Eight piezo inputs provide four detection channels ■ Unique algorithms on the cycle lane and traffic

HI-TRAC® PM Roadside

Particle Monitor

SOLUTIONS Air Quality Monitoring

SOLUTIONS for TDC’s Clients

TDC Systems’ HI-TRAC® PM Roadside Particle Monitor automatically measures real-time airborne PM1.0 ,PM2.5, PM10 or Total Suspended Particles (TSP) Particulate Concentration at any roadside location.

IMPACT OF RISE In Car UsageRecent studies have shown that a sudden rise in car usage in South and East Asia has seen pollution soar, causing a significant rise in premature deaths. Research published in the Lancet found that 2.1 million people died prematurely due to heightened car usage.

The boost in motoring in these areas has also made air pollution one of the world’s fastest growing causes of death. The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study found that it ranks for the first time in the world’s top ten list of killer diseases.

Construction and industry also cause air pollution, but it is motoring that emits tiny particles of diesel soot and gasses, causing major illnesses. As a consequence of this disturbing revelation City Councils are being urged to step up their plans to accurately monitor these pollutants to meet legal Air Quality requirements over a set timetable.

MONITORING POLLUTANTS IN CITIESTo help our customers meet Air Quality requirements, TDC has developed the HI-TRAC® PM Roadside Particle Monitor which can be used to provide accurate Air Quality data 24 hours a day. This remote sensor interfaces seamlessly with the TDC HI-TRAC® iGATE and is the only roadside equipment to deliver the primary Air Quality data from both gaseous and particle sensors. Additional contributory sensors for measuring wind speed and direction, air temperature, road temperature and air moisture can also be integrated.

RUGGED, PORTABLE, ROADSIDE MONITORThe roadside monitor is rugged, portable and ideally suited for roadside applications. The weatherproof enclosure is remotely controlled by the iGATE unit and requires no user intervention at all.

COST EFFECTIVETDC’s HI-TRAC® PM Roadside Particle Monitor offers significantly reduced costs when compared to other cumbersome roadside particle monitors.

DATA COMMUNICATIONS INTERFACEData is communicated via wireless communications to a central server ready for interfacing with the common database or other third party system software solutions.

UK DEPARTMENT for TRANSPORTIn the last 14 years TDC has supplied over 400 HI-TRAC® Systems to the UK Department for Transport (DfT). These systems form the backbone of the GB National Core Census. In 2014 TDC Systems were appointed to carry out the maintenance of the Automatic Traffic Data Collection (ATDC) system outstation sites, London Core Maintenance and Weigh-in-Motion Callibration.

DERBYSHIRE COUNTY COUNCILTDC has supplied over 100 HI-TRAC® EMU2 Loop Profilers, Bridge WIM Systems, Automatic Traffic Counters and Classifiers and Automatic Number Plate Recognition Journey Time Monitoring Systems.

TRANSPORT SCOTLANDTDC has supplied over 300 HI-TRAC® Systems to Transport Scotland providing data to the Scottish Roads Transport Database (SRTDb) and have recently completed WIM calibrations to support 50 sites to support Amey in their role as the Transport Scotland Operations and Infrastructure Services Contractor (TSOISC).

TRANSPORT for GREATER MANCHESTERTDC has been providing ITS solutions to Transport for Greater Manchester for five years and has now won a further five year contract extension which will cover the installation and maintenance of in excess of 800 ITS Systems. These are predominatly HI-TRAC® Blue Journey Time Monitoring Systems and a significant number of HI-TRAC® CMU’s (Cycle and Pedestrian Monitoring Units).

EAST RIDING of YORKSHIREAndrew McGuckin, Principal Engineer and Project Manager at Pell Frischmann said: “TDC have been proactive in every aspect of this contract from the initial bid for the contract to the maintenance of the system. Their ‘can do’ approach filters down from the top through to the bottom of this organisation with everyone willing to help deliver. The organisation of resources and equipment to follow the tight delivery programme has been excellent with any issues resolved in a mutually beneficial way. SERVICESProduction TDC’s production department has been expanded and reorganised within the company’s UK head quarters in Weston-super-Mare. International expansion includes a newly opened TDC manufacturing hub in South America.

Quality ControlledTDC maintains an ISO9001: 2008 Quality Control System. This includes designated areas within HQ for specific types of production and specialist repairs. For example, there is an ‘Items Returned for Repair’ area and a clear process for dealing with these items as soon as they arrive. Similarly we have specific areas and processes for dealing with any items that need to be put into quarantine, ‘goods in’ and stock.

Working Practises ■ Our stock levels are high to minimise the time it takes to repair equipment and replace parts. TDC spare parts

are available for at least 10 years after purchase. ■ TDC Systems’ purchasing procedure (part of the company’s ISO9001:2008 Management System) ensures our

materials and services meet specification and delivery requirements. ■ It is company policy to only use suppliers and subcontractors that meet specific criteria. TDC Systems has an

approved list of suppliers and subcontractors (see opposite for more information). ■ All personnel are responsible for compliance with our purchasing procedure when buying products, materials or

services to meet order requirements. ■ An engineer undertakes the equipment build and arranges the purchase of any additional items

that may be needed. ■ Written assembly instructions are provided as appropriate. ■ Serial numbers identify equipment and products are kept within the original manufacturer’s packaging

before use. ■ The purchase order reference and supplier’s delivery documents provide traceability to source if necessary.

TDC SELECTS AND EVALUATES SUPPLIERS AND SUBCONTRACTORS USING SOME OR ALL OF THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA:

■ Proven experience, quality of service and performance as a supplier or subcontractor of TDC Systems Ltd ■ Recognised Quality Systems (ISO9001) ■ Product Specification ■ Established trade reputation ■ TDC Customer recommendation(s) ■ Satisfactory completion of a TDC questionnaire ■ NHSS registration (subcontractors) – where appropriate

Third Party ManagementSelecting the best and most appropriate suppliers and sub-contractors is critical to the company. Therefore, TDC Systems’ Managing Director has final approval on engaging any new suppliers or subcontractors.

WarrantyIn the unlikely event that any piece of equipment or component becomes obsolete during the lifetime of a contract, TDC will look for an alternative solution to provide the customer with a seamless flow of data. The warranty period begins after successful completion of the Site Acceptance Procedure. If a defect is discovered, we will repair the faulty component using new or refurbished components. If necessary, we will replace the item from our stock.

HI-TRAC® BLUE mountedon a Traffic Signal

CASE STUDIESGreater Manchester, UK

CASE STUDIESBrazil

Trafford Council identified a requirement to determine average link-based journey times along a section of the A56 with the possibility of feeding this information back to road users to help reduce congestion at peak times.

To achieve this they approached the Urban Traffic Control (UTC) section of Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) for advice who in turn appointed TDC Systems to design a system to meet the council’s need.

TDC’s HI-TRAC® BLUE provided the solution as a cost effective and efficient alternative to Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR). The system was set up to detect anonymous Bluetooth™ signals transmitted by visible Bluetooth™ devices inside vehicles and carried by pedestrians travelling east and west through the A56 detection corridor. These include mobile phones, in-car navigation kits and hands-free kits.

This data is then sent in real time via GPRS to the UTC hosted C2 Traffic Database. A Journey Time Matching Engine determines average journey times across each link from matched MAC address data. The C2 Database then exports the data to the UTC Common Database which in turn displays the journey time on Variable Message Signs (VMS). The information displayed on these signs (positioned at strategic points at the start of the route), can help drivers

For 16 years TDC has been inventing, creating and delivering Intelligent Transport Systems across the world. This includes building a strong foothold in the South American region with the supply of Weigh-in-Motion equipment to countries such as Brazil, Chile and Mexico. This foothold is getting stronger with recent new TDC contract wins for 2014 to supply over 300 HI-TRAC® EMU3 Systems in Brazil, Paraguay and Mexico.

New Manufacturing HubTDC has set up a new manufacturing hub in Sao Paulo with local partner Tracevia Do Brasil to provide customers in the region with specialist technical support and resources. A large number of TDC’s WIM systems have been installed across the region and the new hub will build on this strong presence, providing customers with local technical support.

In addition TDC is bringing new product innovations into the region for 2014 with recent contract wins to supply over 300 HI-TRAC® EMU3 Systems. The EMU3 is both a highly accurate Weigh-in-Motion and a real-time Vehicle Classification system. It uses low cost renewable energy supplies which makes the location of roadside installation flexible rather than being dictated by a power supply connection. Its integrated communications module with GPS and unique sensor interface card enable accurate vehicle WIM and classification data to be sent in real-time, every five minutes from the roadside to the command centre. In

make informed choices about their journeys, reducing congestion and improving journey times.

The considerable cost saving from using this approach (rather than ANPR), meant that more HI-TRAC® BLUE Systems could be installed along the route to achieve a higher level of granularity within the data. This makes it easier to determine which sections of the road suffer from poorer journey times and reduced speed – which may indicate congestion.

practice, the system is able to operate wherever a mobile phone service is available and can record motorcycles at the same time as weighing a heavy goods vehicle.

TDC’s Research and Development Team at TDC has also been working on a project in Brazil with the University (Universidade Federal Do Rio Grande Do Sul). The purpose is to investigate road damage caused by heavy axles on the toll roads. Using specialist equipment at the University to simulate heavy axle passage over the road, TDC’s EMU system is being used to measure the number of heavy axles and loading to calculate road damage.

TDC are very pleased to have won a new contract to supply up to 500 HI-TRAC® BLUE Systems to Transport for Greater

CASE STUDIESKingdom of Saudi Arabia

TDC Systems in collaboration with Electro Automation supplied an award winning ITS solution to monitor, store and communicate ‘vehicle by vehicle’ traffic data across the whole NRA Road Network and back to the clients real-time instation.

The main objective was to expand the traffic monitoring sites across the NRA Road Monitoring Network and deliver system architecture that could operate on alternative power sources when a mains supply was not already in place, such as wind and solar power.

TDC’s HI-TRAC® TMU2 provided the solution. A total of 280 traffic monitoring sites were deployed as part of a major overhaul of the existing monitoring network. This involved refurbishing the existing traffic monitoring units. The HI-TRAC® TMU2 was modelled on the field proven EMU2 Counter Classifier and is a multi-functional 19” rack based 16 Loop Counter Classifier with an extremely low power consumption.

It comes with 32Mb Flash on board memory, 8Gbyte micro SD memory, remotely upgradeable firmware and BluetoothTM

MAC Antenna interface for journey time applications. The system also has user configurable fault monitoring and alert conditions which are automatically reported back to the instation. These include power failure, low battery

TDC Systems were commissioned to supply 20 high speed Weigh-in-Motion (WIM) Systems for overweight pre-selection and enforcement in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The Ministry of Transport for The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is committed to improving road safety and protecting their bridges and highways from the damage caused by overweight vehicles.

TDC’s Weigh-In-Motion (WIM) and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system has been installed as an overweight vehicle targeting and enforcement tool. The system combines TDC’s HI-TRAC® 100+ WIM and HI-TRAC® ANPR Cameras with the precision of Kistler Lineas® Quartz WIM Sensors. The WIM sensors are installed on the highway 1km ahead of the low speed enforcement weigh stations.

The system calculates the axle and gross vehicle overloads and takes an image of the vehicle licence plate together with a contextual overview image. Each time an overloaded vehicle is detected, it is diverted into a Weighing Station for inspection and enforcement.

TDC Systems have integrated the Kistler Lineas® Quartz WIM Sensors with the industry standard HI-TRAC® 100+ WIM/ANPR System. As a combined solution it provides the accuracy needed to identify and weigh vehicles within very

voltage, loop/sensor fault, component failure, real time clock fault, communications error and conflicting lane usage. To supplement this comprehensive road traffic data network, we also supplied six of our HI-TRAC® TMU4 Weigh-in-Motion (WIM) Systems. These have a long and exceptional track record having been installed in many countries across the world. The weight data is being combined with Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) for vehicle weight enforcement purposes.

high enforcement tolerances. TDC Systems is managing and delivering the project in partnership with the reputable Shibh Al Jazira Contracting Company whose Head Office is in Riyadh.

This prestigious contract is part of a growing list of international clients choosing TDC Systems as one of the world’s leading and most versatile suppliers of High Speed Weigh-in-Motion Systems.

CASE STUDIESLiverpool, UK

2020 Liverpool approached TDC Systems to provide a low cost and efficient solution which could accurately detect buses and had the ability to communicate with a traffic signal controller. In response TDC modified the low cost, low powered HI-TRAC® UTC-L to include an advanced bus algorithm.

This new system, the HI-TRAC® UTC-L (BP) uses two square loops each measuring 2m x 2m with a 2.5m separation installed in the bus lane prior to the bus stop. The advanced algorithm detects a bus as it approaches the bus stop and passes over the loops. It then communicates with the traffic light junction controller to extend the green light to allow the bus through or to provide a ‘hurry call’.

The system is lower in cost and more efficient than tag based systems where equipment is fitted on every bus that requires priority. It also has the advantage of giving bus operators the flexibility to adapt to fleet allocation across corridors. Additional benefits can be achieved when implementing bus priority strategies within a Common Database such as the Siemens COMET database system, or at sites that are operating under the UTC/SCOOT Networks.

Recent studies in Liverpool found that the bus profiling technology implemented by TDC can be used as an effective way of profiling buses and reducing delays, particularly during those periods when bus delays are highest. 2020 Liverpool have now implemented more than 20 of TDC’s Bus Profiling Systems and is committed to undertaking further bus delay impact studies with a view to expanding the Bus Priority Network.

The Queensway Tunnel in Liverpool (often referred to as the Birkenhead Tunnel), was the first tunnel to be constructed under the River Mersey and took nine years to complete from 1925 to 1934. At the time of construction it was the longest underwater tunnel in the world and held this title for 24 years. It was opened on the 18th July 1934 by King George V at an opening ceremony watched by more than 200,000 people.

The tunnel is 2.01 miles (3.24 km) long and has a single carriageway of four lanes (two in each direction), with a speed limit of 30 mph. The nearside and offside lanes have different height restrictions due to the tunnel’s curvature. There is 3.5t Goods Vehicle Weight Limit and vehicles carrying hazardous waste are not permitted to use the tunnel. All buses must use the offside lane. A toll is exercised for vehicles using the tunnel and the average daily traffic flow is 35,000 vehicles.

The main problem with the tunnel is that despite numerous advanced warning signs, high sided vehicles regularly enter the tunnel in the near side lane which has the lowest clearance at 3.9m (13ft). This causes considerable damage to the inner lining of the tunnel ceiling and severe traffic disruption when repairs are carried out.

Liverpool City Council and Merseytravel (the Integrated Transport Authority for Merseyside) approached TDC Systems with this unique challenge. Our solution to protect the tunnel from these high sided vehicles was to integrate laser height detection with TDC’s HI-TRAC® EMU2. The HI-TRAC® EMU2 accurately classifies vehicles approaching the tunnel using in-road inductive loops combined with laser height detectors. Alarms are automatically generated when any vehicle approaching the tunnel exceeds the height limit, with the exception of buses. Alarms include an audible and rotating light beacon located in the control office and an alarm for the Variable Message Sign along the approach to the tunnel.

CASE STUDIESFrance / Spain

TDC Systems work with a number of overseas technology partners. Recently we were approached by our long standing Spanish partner and distributor, KINEO to help with a vehicle detection and vehicle classification challenge in the Bielsa-Aragnouet Tunnel on the border of France and Spain in the Pyrenees.

The brief was to improve road safety by routing Heavy Goods Vehicles through the narrow two lane tunnel in one direction at a time.

A total of ten of TDC Systems’ HI-TRAC® EMU2’s were supplied, two at the tunnel entrances and eight in different strategic locations inside the tunnel.

The EMU2 can be configured to use a combination of Piezo Electric Sensors and Inductive Loops to accurately detect all vehicle classifications, a pre-requisite of the tunnel detection system.

In this case, the EMU2 firmware was modified and integrated with the KINEO Control System in order to provide alarm outputs when certain vehicles use specific lanes approaching the tunnel. The alarm outputs generated by the HI-TRAC® EMU2’s are used to activate the traffic signals in order to prevent a possible collision.

Since TDC’s HI-TRAC® EMU2’s integration with the KINEO Control System, the end client has been extremely satisfied by the results. This project demonstrates how supplier/distributor partnerships can bring added value in product development and innovation.

CASE STUDIESEast Riding of Yorkshire Council, UK

CASE STUDIESCopenhagen

TDC Systems were awarded the Supply, Installation and Maintenance Contract for all of East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s 73 ATC sites.

The main objective was to expand the traffic monitoring sites. TDC offered a combination of UTC-L’s and EMU2’s which met the council’s requirements for low cost, low powered, IP68 rated (watertight/submersible) Traffic Counter Classifiers.

The Traffic Counter Classifiers were GPRS enabled and fully upgradeable. Potential upgrades include BluetoothTM Journey Time Monitoring, Road Temperature Monitoring, Air Quality Monitoring and Weigh-in-Motion.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council have already taken advantage of Road Temperature Monitoring which is being used by their Street Gritting Section as an addition to the original contract.

All recorded data is sent via GPRS to Drakewell’s C2 web-based platform. This gives East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Traffic Management Team up to date traffic information across their road network to help inform their decision making process. They are also able to store historic data for valuable analysis.

Copenhagen has long been established as one of the world’s great cycle cities. In order to improve the cycle experience Copenhagen’s authorities are looking to offer cyclists priority at traffic light junctions. By offering extended green light time, this allows priority release for cyclists to pass through over other road users.

Given the high numbers of cyclists using the cycle networks in Copenhagen, TDC had to offer a solution capable of monitoring in excess of 10,000 passing per day and the potential of multiple cyclists passing over the sensors at the same time.

In 2013 TDC and MEAS introduced the CYCLE CLUSTER PIEZO SENSOR to provide accurate cycle detection in locations of dense cycle traffic.

This Cycle Cluster Piezo Sensor has been deployed for a traffic signal priority scheme in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The HI-TRAC CMU is located in the traffic signal controller cabinet 25M from the sensor array located in a dedicated cycle path as detailed in the drawing.

Features: ■ Unique Piezo Cycle Cluster Detection Sensor made

exclusively for TDC ■ Detects individual cycles within a cluster ■ Accurate measurement of wheelbase, speed, gap and

headway ■ Distinguishes cycles from prams, scooters,

motorcycles, shopping trolleys and other cycle path traffic

■ Accurate Mixed Traffic Cycle Detection running separate

■ Algorithms on the cycle lane and traffic lane sensors

EAST RIDING of YORKSHIREAndrew McGuckin, Principal Engineer and Project Manager at Pell Frischmann said: “TDC have been proactive in every aspect of this contract from the initial bid for the contract to

the maintenance of the system. Their ‘can do’ approach filters down from the top through to the bottom of this organisation

with everyone willing to help deliver. The organisation of resources and equipment to follow the tight delivery

programme has been excellent with any issues resolved in a mutually beneficial way. The quality of the works on site have

been excellent”.

The HI-TRAC® CMU is programmed to send all data automatically every hour to the central server database using 3G communications. The user can log on to a secure web-

site and access the data.

HI-TRAC® UTC-L (BP)UNIVERSAL TRAFFIC COUNTER & BUS PRIORITY SYSTEM

The HI-TRAC® UTC-L (BP) is a small, low powered, low cost electronic system that can be used to accurately detect buses and transmit an alarm to the Traffic Signal Controller. This allows extension of the Green Light to allow the buses through, or to provide a “hurry call” which forces the controller to the demanded stage as quickly as possible.

The UTC-L (BP) has 4 configurable alarm outputs ideal for Bus Priority applications.

The UTC-L (BP) uses the established TDC Systems Ltd Advanced Loop Profiling function. This function utilises an Advanced Vehicle Loop Signature Identification Algorithm in the embedded software which is used to detect mixed traffic whilst recording vehicle classification, speed, wheelbase, gap and headway.

Modifications have been carried out on the UTC-L (BP) algorithms to eliminate false positive bus detections.

The UTC-L (BP) unit is sealed to IP68 and is usually installed into the traffic signal controller cabinet. If necessary the unit can also be installed into a post or a small roadside pillar.

The UTC-L (BP) can be configured to automatically transmit traffic data via GPRS to a web server for secure data storage to a database. GSM dial-up communications is also supported.

The storage Media Drive can be used to provide storage of over 3,000,000 vehicle records.

HI-TRAC® BLUEJOURNEY TIME MONITORING

The HI -TRAC® BLUE is the most

advanced journey time monitoring

system on the market, directly and

accurately measuring vehicle and

pedestrian journey time using low-

cost, non-intrusive technology in a

sealed IP68 unit suitable for roadside

operation.

The HI -TRAC® BLUE reads unique

MAC BluetoothTM signals transmitted

by visible BluetoothTM devices

located inside vehicles and carried

by pedestrians such as mobile

phones, PDAs, hands-free kits,

GPS onboard units and laptops.

These are transmitted via GPRS or

cabled Ethernet TCP/IP connection

to a central server database. MAC

addresses from other HI-TRAC® BLUE

systems are then matched to calculate

traffic journey times and movements.

TDC have worked in partnership with

the University of Bristol, world leaders

in antenna design to optimise our

BluetoothTM antennas. The Circular

Polarized Planar 4 Element Patch

Antenna Array offers greater detection

zone control and a more compact

solution that is easy to install in a wide

range of locations.The new antenna

gives greater control over the traffic

detection zone.

There are up to four outputs for event

triggering, for example: congestion

alarms and traffic signal priority.

Also there are expansion ports for TDC

Systems’ Particle Monitor (RS232), Mote

Air Quality Sensor (ZIGBEE), Weather

Sensors and Future Technology.

TDC Systems are now able to offer WiFi

detection. This allows detection of MAC

addresses of WiFi enabled devices to

provide additional data to track vehicle

and pedestrian movement.

Sensing System Across a Grid

Environment) project by researchers at

Newcastle University, TDC Systems has

taken it a step further by integrating the

E-MOTE with the iGate to provide users

with real time pollution levels alongside

other roadside measurements.

The E-MOTES are easily deployed by

fixing to lamp posts or similar street

furniture at a height of 2.5m plus and up

HI-TRAC® PMROADSIDE PARTICLE MONITOR

The HI-TRAC® PM automatically measures real-time airbourne PM10, PM2.5, PM1.0 or TSP particulate concentration at any roadside location. The remote sensor interfaces seamlessly with the HI-TRAC® iGATE and offers real time air quality information.

The HI-TRAC® PM uses an

advanced nephelometer which automatically

measures real-time airbourne PM1.0, PM10,

PM2.5, or TSP particulate concentration

levels using the principle of forward laser

light scatter. Sample air is drawn into the

monitor and through the laser optical

module, where the particulate in the sample

air stream scatters the laser light through

reflective and refractive properties. This

scattered light is collected onto a photodiode

detector at a near-forward angle and the

resulting electronic signal is processed

to determine a continuous, real-time

measurement of airbourne particulate

mass concentrations. This method has

been approved by both USA and European

agencies.

The New Standard in Real-Time Roadside

Particle Monitoring

The HI-TRAC® PM will provide accurate, AQ

data 24 hours a day. When combined with

our gaseous monitor and weather sensors,

the HI-TRAC® iGATE AQ station is the only

roadside equipment to deliver both the

primary AQ data from gaseous and particle

sensors. This is then automatically integrated

with important data from related sensors such

as wind speed and direction, Relative Humidity

(RH) and temperature.

The HI-TRAC® PM is rugged, portable and

easy to use. The weatherproof enclosure is

remotely controlled and monitored by the

main HI-TRAC® unit and requires no user

intervention. All maintenance features are front

panel mounted and easily accessible.

The HI-TRAC® PM now has auto baseline

checking to ensure data integrity over longer

periods of use as well as micro controlled

flow regulation and automatic dew point

compensation. This makes the HI-TRAC® PM

very reliable and easy to use. Data is gathered

and presented via the HI-TRAC® iGATE and is

presented in a wide range of customer specific

styles.

The HI-TRAC® PM is the most feature-packed

light-scatter Aerosol Monitor available. The HI-

TRAC® PM is ideal for all roadside applications

and is supplied with mounting brackets and

local cabling.
