Not seen until late September, Bonfire (GB) (Manduro{Ger}) quickly established himself on the internationalracing scene and, according to the World Rankings, there were ultimately very few better juveniles than himat the end of last term. At the outset of his Classicyear, the exciting bay colt who carries the hopes of thefamed Highclere Thoroughbred Racing syndicate, willbid to add some more luster to the honor roll at ParkHouse Stables, Kingsclere. That Newbury-based trainingestablishment is now under the care of Andrew Balding, son of Ian who orchestrated the career of the great MillReef and other luminaries such as Lochsong (GB) andSelkirk. After a fluent debut win over a mile at Salisbury, thehalf-brother to last year=s G3 Musidora S. winnerJoviality (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}) was deemed unlucky tobe only third in the G1 Criterium International over thattrip at Saint-Cloud on his other outing at the end ofOctober. It was a strong-closing effort in a deep racethat offered much hope that 2012 could be amomentous year for all involved. He is already one ofthe bargain buys of recent times, having cost JohnWarren just 90,000gns at Book 1 of the TattersallsOctober Sale. Highclere supremo Harry Herbert was onhand this week to tell the story so far. AJohn knew thishorse well, as he and my sister Carolyn bred him and hewas always a yearling that caught their eye, especiallywhen he was being prepared for the sales,@ Herbertrevealed.

AAs you can imagine, I would not buy a Highclerehomebred readily for obvious reasons, but this horsewas an absolute standout as an individual and we hadheard how much John Gosden liked his half-sister,Joviality. I was thrilled to buy him for 90,000gns,although my sister was less than happy at the time, asshe expected him to make considerably more!@ Sire Manduro, who earned the ultimate accolade fromAndre Fabre, was also responsible for the G1 Criteriumde Saint-Cloud winner Mandaean (GB) from his firstcrop and Herbert is firmly on the side of the KildanganStud resident. AI was a huge fan of Manduro when he was racingand it didn=t entirely surprise me when Andre Fabredescribed him as the best horse he had every trained,@he said. AHe always seemed to travel so well in hisraces and then produced that devastating turn of footwhich marked him out as an exceptional racehorse.@ Bonfire is out of Night Frolic (GB) (Night Shift), whoseimmediate family includes the high-class Karen=s Caper(War Chant) and Miss Coronado (Coronado=s Quest) andwhose yearling colt by Duke of Marmalade (Ire) made asplash in Newmarket in October. ANight Frolic herself comes from a prolific black-typefamily and so, on paper, Bonfire has every chance ofcompeting at the highest level. The Duke of Marmaladehalf-brother sold for 340,000gns at last year=s Book 1Sale at Tattersalls. He was bought by Demi O=Byrne, and as an individual, is another stunning animal whohonestly could be anything.@

Bonfire=s early reputation went before him at two andhe proved the vibes were right during his brief butdramatic autumn campaign. Herbert takes up the storyagain. AAndrew always liked the horse and it was clear tosee from early on in the spring that he was an athleticindividual who got to the top of the gallops with theminimum of fuss,@ he explained. AHe has always beenquite a lively character at home, which is why Andrewdecided to pony him to the start when he made hisdebut at Salisbury. He was expected to run very well onhis debut, but none of us expected him to make such animpressive racecourse debut. He showed a tremendousturn of foot that day and it turned out that his divisionof the maiden was significantly faster than the otherone. The Criterium International was the right sort ofevent for him, timing-wise, and I am a great believer inhaving a go at a good race if you think you have got aspecial horse. We did the same with Motivator after hewon his maiden at Newmarket when he went on to winthe Racing Post Trophy on his second start. I think thatthere is no question that he would have won at Saint-Cloud had he been able to get out of the pocket that hewas trapped in. I don=t blame Jimmy [Fortune] at all, because if you look at the replay there was no chanceat any stage of the race of being able to get into adifferent position unless he had literally pulled him tothe back of the field in order to come around horses, which would have meant losing a tremendous amountof ground.@ With that vital experience of top-flight racing behindhim, Bonfire=s immediate future concerns the Classicsand one in particular. The first Saturday in June is very much on theagenda, according to Herbert. AHe had a long holiday atHighclere Stud during the winter and was very relaxedout in his paddock,@ he continued. AHe has madetremendous physical improvement over the past fewmonths and he certainly has the look of a very goodhorse. He has been back in full training with Andrew forthree weeks and has recently been introduced to theequine treadmill. The programme after the TattersallsMillions 3yo Trophy [over 10 furlongs at Newmarket=sCraven meeting in April], depending how he gets on inthat race, will most probably be a Derby trial, such asthe G3 Chester Vase or the G2 Dante S. I think that heshould stay a mile and a half and the Derby will mostcertainly be his primary objective. His half-sister,Joviality, who won the Musidora last year didn=t stayfurther than a mile and a quarter, but she was by CapeCross and so, with Manduro adding stamina to the topline, I would be quietly confident that he would get amile and a half. Personally, I believe that he will go onany ground, as he has such a good action.@

Like It Or Not, NYRA Needs Aqueduct AIf New York Governor Andrew Cuomo gets his way and Aqueduct is eventually closed to make room for a massive Convention Center, racing fans will learn the hard way that they=ve been taking the Big A for granted." Bob Ehalt, ESPN

Few syndicates get to experience the ultimate thrill ofClassic glory, but the Royal Ascot Racing Club lived thedream when Motivator (GB) streaked to success in the2005 renewal of the blue riband. If Bonfire emulatesthat dashing individual in the more familiar Highclerelivery, it would provide a pinnacle moment for the firm. AIt would mean everything, as the Derby remains the

most important race to winand to achieve it in the pale-blue silks of Highclere wouldbe every bit as emotional asit was with Motivatorwinning for the Royal AscotRacing Club that I manage,@he says. AAt Highclere, weput these syndicates togetherwith the aim of giving ourshareowners the best

possible chance of competing at the highest level andover the years we have been fortunate enough to haveraced seven European Champions including the WorldChampion Harbinger, proving that the Classic dreamreally is within reach. With Bonfire, we just might haveanother horse who could take us to those amazingheights once again.@ Bonfire represents the Pocahontas syndicate withinthe Highclere set-up and Herbert revealed that the grouphas something else to excite them and it may be thatEpsom=s Oaks provides another focus this year. AThe Pocahontas Syndicate is made up of two horsesand 20 shareowners at a cost of ,12,950 per share.Vow (GB), the other horse in the syndicate, is a lovelydaughter of Motivator and a half-sister to the top-classperformers Beaten Up (GB) and Harris Tweed (GB). Shewas too immature to race as a 2-year-old, but showedplenty of natural ability on the home gallops. Hopefully, she will be seen out in the spring and we will take it onestep at a time with her. She is very well liked by WilliamHaggas, as well as his wife Maureen, who rides the fillyout each morning. Last year, she also rode DancingRain, who won the Oaks, so let=s hope that lightningcan strike twice!@--Tom Frary

Trainer David Ferraris, winless at the Group 1 level since stretching back toVengeance Of Rain=s 2007 Dubai Sheema Classic win, broke through here as the 4-year-old came from off aslow pace to score by a neck under Weichong Marwing.AIt feels tremendous because I've had a poor season, particularly so with all the close seconds I=ve had,@ saidFerraris. ASweet Orange has had no luck in his last fewraces and it=s been heartbreaking, but he's a courageoushorse that just keeps improving--he's top-class.Importantly, he had the right rider. Weichong gallopedthe horse on Sunday and he told me he wasn'tconcerned about what was running because he said Ihad the horse 100%.@ According to Ferraris, SweetOrange may make his next start in either the G1Mercedes-Benz Hong Kong Derby (3rd Leg of theFour-Year-Old series) or the 1800m G1 Mercedes-BenzHong Kong Classic Cup (2nd Leg of the Four-Year-Oldseries) Feb. 19. AThe 2000m will be his absolute game,@opined the trainer. AI think he will run in the 1800m andthen go to the Derby. There aren't too many races forhim so I think I'll keep him to his own company.@

RETIRED RACEHORSE TRAINER CHALLENGE:DAY TWOStory and photos by Sarah AndrewYou can read about Day One on the TDN Blog (clickhere). Day Two of the Retired Racehorse Trainer Challengeat last weekend's Maryland Horse World Expo drew amuch larger crowd than the first day. Three

Thoroughbreds were led, tackedup, into the brightly lit CowPalace Arena. Four X The Troubleregarded the bleachers, foodstands, sound system, andrunning children carefully with acocked head and bright eyes. For the benefit of the folks whowere not able to attend Friday'sevaluation, president SteuartPittman went over the rules andintroduced the participatingtrainers and horses in the RetiredRacehorse Training Program(RRTP) and the Trainer Challenge.

Noticeably absent fromSaturday's activities was HighLevel, the versatile chestnutchosen by trainer Tiffany Catledge.Steuart Pittman announced thatHigh Level had developed a stonebruise. While he heals, Catledgewill work with the alternate,Solidify, the tall dark bay geldingfrom MidAtlantic Horse Rescue. In order to maintain an authentictraining experience, none of thehorses in the Challenge were allowed to be ridden oncethey retired from the track. With the exception of onebrief under-saddle evaluation to check for physicalissues, these horses had been turned out since theirretirement. At the Expo, Pittman explained, AI told [the trainers]

they could sleep in the stallswith the horses if theywanted to, to bond withthem, but they couldn't geton them. Tiffany asked, >Canwe just get on them once justto make sure it=s OK?= and Isaid, >No, I want this to be asreal as possible.=@ And real it was. Eric Dierkswas in the saddle on the

dapple grey mare, Brazilian Wedding, before Pittmancompleted his introduction.

Bitted in a loose ring snaffle with no martingale andwearing brushing boots on her legs, the mare walkedaround the ring in both directions, with one ear on herrider and one ear on the crowd. Tiffany Catledge let Solidify feel the weight of a riderby standing in the left stirrup and leaning on the saddlebefore she swung her right leg over his back. True to hisFonzie-esque attitude, the 6-year-old gelding was just ascool on Saturday as he was on Friday. Catledge settledlightly into the saddle and walked on. Solidify was fittedwith a D-ringsnaffle, brushingboots, training yoke(minus themartingaleattachment), and asmart-lookingbridle, generouslydonated by thefolks at Five StarTack. Once KerryBlackmer gentlymounted up, Four XThe Trouble prowled the arena, neck still turned towardthe crowd. He sported a baucher bit, polo wraps, and asimple breastplate. Blackmer allowed him to check outhis surroundings while she maintained soft contact onthe reins. The riders asked their horses to trot, and the horsesresponded with sensitivity and intelligence. BrazilianWedding was the first to relax into a soft, huntery trot. While she was understandably tense through the backand neck, her responsiveness and trust in her rider wasimpressive. With training and suppling exercises, hergaits will only get better. Four X The Trouble seemed to improve with work.Once he was given a task, he looked less at the crowdand focused more on his rider. Solidify was tense at the

beginning of his trotwork, but helengthened his strideand relaxed his toplinea bit after a shortamount of time. The arena was small, less than 60' x 120'.Pittman upped the antewhen he asked thetrainers to canter theirhorses. One by one, each horse cantered

around the arena. The stereotype that an ex-racehorseis unable to pick up both leads was put to rest by allthree of these versatile equine athletes, who eachpicked up left and right leads on the first attempt. My favorite part of the session was seeing the grinsof the riders and the crowd. With each challenge, theriders beamed at their game horses.

The skill and talent of these riders was inspiring. Eachrider struck a delicate balance with hand and leg. Someof the horses were more comfortable with a little morerein contact and leg, and some were happier with less.Blackmer's balance in the saddle helped her with Four XThe Trouble's canter. She sat in a half seat, heelsflexed, and maintained contact with his mouth forguidance. Catledge used a little more leg on Solidify andlet him have a little slack in the rein. Brazilian Weddingstruck up a nice rhythm with her canter as Dierksgrinned from ear to ear. The session was a tremendous success for all thehorses and trainers. The riders dismounted, gave theirhorses pats on the necks, and walked them in hand fora few minutes as the judges asked questions about theirrides. Trainers, owners, judges, and spectators were alldelighted, and I for one can't wait to see the progressthese horses will have made in five weeks. Want to get involved?
