We promote Christian values, excellence in learning and quality relationships to enable students to be outstanding citizens. Our College shall be a place where all “...encounter the living God who in Jesus Christ reveals his transforming love and truth”. This time of year can be a real challenge for us to integrate all the activities we do into the school curriculum. We have had swimming sports, athletics, Year 13 Hikoi, Year 11 PE at Great Barrier, and Year 9 on the Karetu Marae for three nights this week. We also had the Year 7 camp scheduled for this week, but it has been postponed due to the weather. All of these activities draw upon the goodwill of staff and the wallets of our parents. It does demand something from us all to run these events. They take a lot of time to organise, especially the whole year group activities, so when you see Mr Davison, Mrs Williams or Mrs Fortune, do pass on your thanks for the great work that they do. Is all this additional activity worth the time and expense? I think it is. I have been on the Year 13 and Year 9 events this year and it was a real pleasure to spend time with so many great students. They were very co-operative at all times and they managed the occasional difficult situation with minimal fuss. It was also really interesting to see how our emphasis on enhancing singing, tikanga māori and liturgies is paying dividends. The Year 13’s singing was just stunning. The Year 9’s were very good as well. At this age the boys tend to be rather conscience of the way their voice changes, but this group did not seem fixated on that at all. At both of these events we celebrated Mass with Fr Phil. Irrespective of the many benefits arising from these events, sometimes teachers and parents worry about this time outside of the classroom. Does this time away from the classroom impact upon the students’ academic outcomes? I don’t think it does. A few years ago I looked at the top academic students in our College and discovered that almost 100% of them were involved in significant activities outside of their school studies. My conclusion was that these students’ were very good at managing their time and were complimenting their studies with something else that they were passionate about. Our academic results through the whole school are very good. In recent years Pompallier Catholic College has consistently academically outperformed the four large schools in Whangarei and other schools in Northland. In 2016, our pass rates were once again the best in Northland for medium/large schools in Northland. Six gold and three bronze awards this year. The next best school had one gold and another had two silver. Congratulations to all the staff, students and families for enabling this on-going success. Based on an analysis of participation rates for NCEA and Northland schools with more than forty students in Year 13. The table below shows that we are also preparing our students for the academic rigor of University Entrance. We don’t pad out our results with soft options for students to improve our statistics at Level 1 and Level 2 NCEA. We aim to have every student attain Level 2 NCEA as a minimum educational outcome, as well as preparing students for university study if they so desire. University Entrance: Percentage of Year 13 students attaining University Entrance in a given year. * The academic requirements for UE were changed this year. There is considerable evidence to show that adults with tertiary qualifications live longer, earn more, have better health and enjoy life more, when compared to adults with no tertiary qualifications. There is one school that is clearly ahead of the others in preparing students for such an outcome. “learning excellence for life”

Newsletter 3: 10 March, 2017

VISION STATEMENT

Pompallier Catholic College is a Catholic community with a Marist charism that challenges all students to excel in their endeavours. We promote Christian values, excellence in learning and quality relationships to enable students to be outstanding citizens. Our College shall be a place where

all “...encounter the living God who in Jesus Christ reveals his transforming love and truth”.

University Entrance:

Percentage of Year 13 students attaining University Entrance in a given year.

OUTSIDE EVENTS

All events entered are subject to student interest, parent help and organiser’s changes.

Students should attend meetings at school to collect a newsletter about events. Their names are taken so an email can also be sent. Parents should then send back the signed permission slip by the due date to ensure participation in the event.

Sports are user pays and must be paid for BEFORE the event – not added to student accounts to be paid on account at a later date, or as per your payment arrangement. Thank you for your understanding in this matter.
