Following the Mass, we shared a meal with the parents of the confirmed students and Bishop Pat, prepared for us by our students studying Food Technology. The last hour of the school day was given to a competition between our school House groups. Each House had to present a scripture reading aligned with the theme of Hope, and a reflection upon their chosen scripture. This was supported by the House with waiata. Some students in Year 12 and Year 13 will be dual enrolled at NorthTec and our College in 2020. We have designed a new structure for their school year that will be better for all students and staff. In recent years, having students study at two locations during the week has caused disruptions for staff and students who needed to catch up on missed work. Next year we will limit the number of students applying and provide fewer, but more intensive, subject options for them at our College. These students plan to leave school at the end of the year to attend further training or to seek an apprenticeship. I strongly endorse students leaving at the end of Year 12 if they have made an informed decision and have a plan for on-going training, or an employment offer. Students who stay on into Year 13 should be doing that because they have the desire to attend a tertiary institute, such as a University, or they need more time to enhance other attributes of their education. We can cater for both, but primarily we arrange our curriculum at Year 13 to meet the needs of University-bound students. There is a lot more change in the education sector being introduced by the Government over the next two years. This includes a revamp of NCEA, a new digital technologies curriculum, additional staffing for learning support, and new opportunities arising from being in a Community of Learning. Given this change, we will be looking at whether the needs of our students might be better addressed by enabling more flexibility and specialisation choices for our senior students (Years 11- 13), and a more prescribed course of learning for students in the junior years, utilising more cross-curricula project based learning. Knowing how to use your learning in different ways and contexts is very important today. The need to recall learning is less important now as it becomes quickly outdated, and we have the ever increasing use of technology to aid our recall. On the staffing side, we need to plan for staff who will be on maternity leave, study leave, a few retiring, and one heading back home to the UK. Fortunately, we are able to get a good pool of suitable applicants in most subject areas except for te reo Māori. This learning area continues to have a shortage in the supply of suitable teachers for Secondary Schools throughout New Zealand. Enrolments continue to be strong for 2020 and we are unlikely to be able to offer any non-preference places aside to siblings of current non-preference students. In 2019 we ran two additional classes, and we may need to add another in 2020 for Year 9. There is a building programme in place now for four additional classrooms, which will be built around the middle of 2020, if all goes to schedule. They will be used for our Year 7/8 students in 2021 or late 2020. Richard Stanton PRINCIPAL

VISION STATEMENT

Pompallier Catholic College is a Catholic community with a Marist charism that challenges all students to excel in their endeavours. We promote Christian values, excellence in learning and quality relationships to enable students to be outstanding citizens. Our College shall be a place where

all “...encounter the living God who in Jesus Christ reveals his transforming love and truth”.

UPCOMING SURVEY BY SPORT NORTHLAND

Sport New Zealand and Sport Northland will soon be circulating an online survey with our students. We will be asking for your permission to allow this to happen.

Why are we surveying Rangatahi (Young People)?

Young people are important to us, and experiences during secondary school years can inspire or discourage a life-long involvement in physical activity. We want to ensure that rangatahi have great sport, physical activity and active recreation experiences at school. The more we know about a population group, the better placed we are to provide opportunities and experiences that meet their needs, ultimately supporting a lifelong love of being active. Rangatahi need representation at the decision-making table - we need to be making decisions that are informed by the audience who we are looking to cater for. We’ll only know how to improve experiences if we understand what rangatahi are doing now.

WANT TO PLAY CRICKET?

The City Cricket Club Junior Registration Day is on Saturday 14

th September, from 9.00am – 1.00pm, at the

Cobham Oval Main Pavilion, Okara Drive.

We are looking for interested boys and girls to join our club and play for the FireCo City Juniors for the coming season.

Professional coaching provided. Parent helpers welcome!

HEALTH CORNER

Did you know that we each have an EMOTIONAL LOVE TANK? Were you aware that we are uplifted or destroyed by the Love Languages we receive or fail to receive? According to Dr Gary Chapman, author of 5 Love Languages, our emotional love tanks are filled, making us feel amazing, when we are “spoken to” in our preferred ‘language’. Most people have a dominant Love Language, and often a 2

nd dominant.

Physical touch can include hugs and kisses and physical play, a tap on the shoulder or a high 5.

Words of Affirmation include words of affection and endearment; words of praise and encouragement, words of positive guidance and belief.

Quality Time is focused attention. It is the gift of presence… being together, doing together.

Gifts are seen as an extension of you and your love, for the person whose language is gifts. They are precious beyond for building a sense of acceptance and security.

Acts of Service, when you do something for another, creating a feeling of worth and gratitude for the receiver of the gift.

QUESTION: What is your teenager’s love language? Do you speak it daily?

Check out more details in 5 Love Languages by Dr Gary Chapman.
