Senior Banquet at BHSAids Scholarship Fund

BELLPORT—The Senior banquet for the Bellport , High SchoolClass of li)61 was held May 18 at the school. The theme this yearwas "Springtime in Paris." Proceeds svill go to the scholarship fund.

The decorations committee was commended for its hours of laborwith a splendid artistic finale. The auditorium walls from floor tov -t ' i mi; we re coveied with brownpaper upon which were 1 drawn andpainted numerous Paris scenes.Many mount ings of baskets con-ta in ing pastel p ink and blue flow-ers were hung in the corners. Onesvall had a floral welcome to Pariswhile rod geraniums lined thestage front . The curtain was dec-orated wi th Paris travel posters.These and manv natural ana ar-tificial multicolored floral arrange-ments bedecked the tables set forfour on two sides of the room, inParisian sidewalk cafe sty le. Treesof pastel blue stood in back ofthese tables. Behind the U-shapedtabk' at which some of tho giustsand otlice:s of Student Council andClass officers sat was a paint ingof Napoleon done bv the commit-tee.

Ninety-six graduates and 17guests were welcomed by Mrs.Thomas Murp h y, president of theJunior-Senior High School Parent -Teacher Association , who wasmaster-of-ceremonies. R i c h a r dMav , president of the class, saidGrace. Then followed a roast beefdinner served by 11 svaitresseswith pastel colored crepe paperaprons and caps . Public Opinion Survey FindsTeachers Tops; Marking Hit

In Central District 4:

BELLPORT—The Citi-zens' C o u n c i l of CentralSchool District 4 has com-pleted its tabulations andanalysis on the public opin-ion survey recently conduct-ed in t h e district . Over3,000 questionnaires weremailed to residents of thedistrict in April.

The purpose of this question-naire svas to determine the publicattitude on many important ques-tions relating to the operation ofthe schools. There were 30 ques-tions covering such fields as therecent hi gh school site vote , trans-portation , marking system, etc.

The council svas pleased to finda favorable response to its ques-tionnaire regarding the quality ofteaching. About 70 per cent foundthe teachers to be between aver-age and superior , while only twoper cent found them poor. Almostas impressisre svas the supportshosvn for the subjects and themanner in wheh they are taught.

The only part of the educationalprogram failing to win approvalsvas the marking system, nosvbased on teacher evaluation of thepup il. Strong support svas givento the traditional numerical mark-ing system.

Throughout the replies a strongfeeling manifest ed itself againsthigh taxes. This feeling svas shar-ed equall y by all areas of the dis-trict. Nowhere was this more evi-dent than in the replies regardingthe defeated vote on the proposedhigh school site. It is to be as-sumed the recent budget defeatconfirms the above conclusion.

On the question regarding bustransportation , .">0 per cent favoredkeeping it the same , 32 per centfavored an increase and 18 percent favored decreasing transpor-tation.

The question regarding doublesessions evoked the largest re-sponse of any. While a majorityopposed double sessions , an appre-ciable percentage felt the qualityof education would not be affectedby double sessions.

The council thanked all thosewho returned questionnaires andespecially those svhose extra com-ments did so much to make theiranswers more meaning ful. Thecomplete results of the survey arebeing made available to theSchool Board for its study. Theseresults svill also be used as a basisfor further action by the Citizens'Council.

Many years ago the founder ofGirl Scouting in America , JulietteLow , said that the wearing ofa proficiency badge indicates thata girl has done something oftenenough and ssrell enough so thatshe is prepared to give service inthat field and no girl should ac-cept or svear such a badge unlessshe is ready and wil l ing to do so.When 10 proficiency badges havebeen earned , four or five of which

are in one field of interest, andability to do advanced work infour fields has been demonstrateda Second Class scout is preparedfor her first class rank. Mrs. Losvsaid a First Class scout is a firstclass person.

VISIT TO CD CENTER — Class 7-1 of Bell-port Junior High School visited Suffolk CountyCivil Defense Control Center in Patchogue lastweek. Stanley Rabin, their teacher, is a radiooperator for Civil Defense. Class had beenstudying how communications can help com-munity in event of disaster/ Visit started with

talk by Edward Call , staff assistant of SuffolkCounty CD, on Civil Defense radio networkoperations. This was broadcast to students intheir classroom in Bellport. Students were ableto ask Mr. Call questions by radio. Class thenproceeded to Patchogue and were given tour ofcounty headquarters.

BELLPORT — With only 24residents present , the annual Citi-zens' primary in Bellport Fridaynight svas a quiet event. All incum-bents on the Village Board whoseterms expire this year were unan-imously nominated as candidatesfor re-election June 20.

Mayor Harry F. Bedell wasnominated by Trustee Rosvland F.Smith , seconded by Harrison Web-er. Mayor Bedell nominated Tx*us-tee John T. Keeley, and GeorgeCoon seconded the nomination.Trustee Lawrence E. Fuller wasnominated by Trustee Keeley, sec-onded by Paul Keeley.

Raymond R. MjacLea n was chair-man of the meeting, with Mrs.Martha R. Houston as clerk.Trustee James Vaughan andEmery L. Van Horn were appoint-ed tellers and Mrs. Conrad Heedeand Stanley B. Piermann, inspect-ors. As a Committee on vacancies,Mrs. Heede, Mr. Piermann andTrustee Vaughan were appointedby Mr. MacLean. The name ofCitizens' Party was adopted andthe scooter chosen as the emblem.

The annual dinner of the Central District 4 Teachers Associationwas held Saturday night at The Patchogue Hotel. About 100 members,their wives and husbands enjoyed a dinner followed by dancing. Musicsvas provided by The Unknosvns.

Guest-oi'-honor at the dinner was Mrs. Onalee Shaffer, who isretiring Irom teaching Lhis bpringalter '68 years of service—85 ofthem in this school district.

Herman Chamberiain, svho l etir-ed as supe vising principal in li>59 ,and Dr. Ersvin Dingman, supervis-ing principal , gave short speeches,and James Lazroe presented thegift, a sterling silver tea set svithan inscription on it, to Mrs. Shaf-fer. Mrs. Shaffer then read aiouda letter from Walter Ormsby, su-perintendent of the Second Super-visory District, who svas unable toattend the dinner. Mr. Ormsbywas her principal when she firsttaught here.

Maynard Bowman , who has ac-cepted a position as principal atthe Middleport Elementary Schoolfor next year, ss-as presented svitha farewell gift. The Bowman fa-mily has lived in Bell port for thepast seven years, and Mr. Bosv-man has taught at the elementaryand junior high school level. BothMrs. Bosvman and Mrs. Shafferwere given corsages.

Among the guests present at thedinner svere Mr. and Mrs. Cham-berlain , Dr. and Mrs. Dingman ,and board members, Dr. and Mrs.Daniel Koshland , Mr . and Mrs.Jack Brandi and David Lanman.The board presented Mrs. Shafferwith a scroll commemorating herservices and signed by board pre-sident , Emery Van Horn.

Members of the dinner commit-tee were Mrs. Doroth y Keeier ,Mrs. Lydia Peck and Miss EdithHughes. Miss Jennie Lotito was incharge of the gifts.
