Page 2: TEAM 1 - A critical look at the State's plan for the I-70 corridor in Denver

Problem Statement

I-70 forms a physical barrier that disconnects the local street network and neighborhood fabric, forcing local residents to use it as a local route, and causing an uneven pattern of growth in Denver.

Page 3: TEAM 1 - A critical look at the State's plan for the I-70 corridor in Denver

Vision Statement

Establish a network that favors neighborhoods and enriches multi-modal mobility. Reconnect local streets to allow for improved movement within neighborhoods and the greater metropolitan region without reliance on the interstate. Amend zoning plans to create a more robust, and local, commercial environment. Enrich the street network to accomodate a dense and efficient pattern of growth.

design principles

Re-appropriate federal funds from I-70 to improve local street network

Prioritize I-70 as a through-traffic corridor and limit access on & off

Enrich local connectivity to create a more robust local network

Promote the efficient growth of Denver evenly through its fabric

Strengthen and expand existing commercial corridors

Emphasize Fastracks/TOD as growth epicenters, expanding tax base

Some of the input received from community stakeholders has been that the alternatives currently being analyzed do not satisfy the interests of the surrounding neighborhoods. Taking this into consideration, the project team developed a new alternative that includes partial cover over a section of lowered highway. This alternative lowers the highway below ground, allows for an area of green space, and provides north/south connections in selected locations.

How much does this project cost?

Total funding for a preferred alternative has not been identifi ed at this time. During the development of the Final EIS, consideration will be given to a phased Record of Decision (ROD) which would allow CDOT to fund and implement elements of the preferred alternative over an extended period of time.
