Connecting Churches to

LEADERSHIP MATTERS by Roger Yancey, D.Min. I am so grateful for each church in the TEBA. The past few weeks I have seen the extraordinary love and commitment to respond to the needs of a community impacted by Hurricane Harvey. Churches opened as Shelters, Collection Centers, Disaster Relief Team Staging Areas, and a host of other ministry points all showing the reality of the love of God. Church Teams have come from all over the Association to assist other churches in responding to the needs of their own flood-impacted facilities and homes within their communities. Church staffs and volunteers put in 90-100 hour weeks to meet the needs that arose from the storm. Some took boats to rescue flood victims and many took offerings to provide support for the ongoing needs of churches. To all of you who have and will help – THANK YOU! You demonstrated that together we are more and that each of you became God’s hands and feet to a hurting world. In Kingdom service, Executive Director/Area Missionary

While preparations were being made a few weeks ago for Hurricane Harvey’s landfall, I realized that this is the first hurricane that I’ve experienced since Andrew, as I’ve been living outside of Texas since the ‘90’s. The lack of bread/ water; gas stations no longer pumping gas; watching loaded-down pickup trucks making their way out of the Houston area; my neighborhood being evacuated during the storm; the lingering all-consuming question ‘will my house get flooded this time (and why didn’t I purchase flood insurance before)?’ – all of the idiosyncrasies packed into a hurricane event - my daughter who was born overseas was experiencing for the first time. Yet, through it all, she never panicked. She exhibited a confidence in God’s protection that I didn’t expect.

Something else that I observed in the aftermath of the storm were churches helping other churches. There is a spirit of cooperation on the ground here in the Houston area that I’ve not witnessed before. The closest parallel I can use for measurement would be the way I’ve seen different missionaries from other organizations who serve in closed & restricted countries tend to put aside their denominational differences and work together towards a common goal. When we as believers unify and focus on those things which Paul described as ‘of first importance,’ then God the Father is answering Jesus’ high priestly prayer in John 17, that He would unify us as one as He and the Father are one – that the world may believe that Jesus has been sent by the Father.

In the past few weeks, God has creatively allowed events to occur which have forced Americans to recognize their insignificance in the face of an all-powerful God. Beginning with the marvel of a total solar eclipse and followed the same week with Hurricane Harvey; as I type this, Hurricane Irma is about to slam into Florida, a massive earthquake has just occurred in Mexico, with two other major hurricanes en route to North America. Conversations about all of these events are happening in neighborhoods. God has custom-designed gospel opportunities everywhere for those who normally never share their faith. Christians – let’s not miss our God-given opportunity to inject the gospel into these conversations as they see our unity and our confidence in this all-powerful, good and holy God. Grace & Peace, Darrell Ingram

REFLECTIONS FROM HARVEY By: Darrell Ingram

CHURCH/MISSION FOCUS: OAK RIDGE BAPTIST CHURCH By: Erin Frazier

Oak Ridge Baptist Church was organized in 1969 as a mission church under the sponsorship of FBC Conroe, which Pastor Galen Cooper has been privileged to serve as the pastor since 2006. His wife is Lania and they are blessed with three children: daughter MeKenzie, who married Kris Flynn this year; a son, Brice, who is a senior at UT Dallas, and a his youngest son, Carson, who is an 8th grader at Irons Jr. High. Pastor Cooper is currently working on completing the doctorate program at Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. ORBC is involved in numerous ministries within the community and around the world. “Our Kindness Culture is an exciting monthly commitment to go into our community as a church performing acts of kindess This is a ministry which involves all ages in the congregation.” Within the community; they are also involved in partnering regularly with Pregnancy Assistance Center South, the South County YMCA’s Operation Backpack, and Samaritan’s Purse’s Operation Christmas Chiild. They are also often partners with the City of Oak Ridge North’s special events and Oak Ridge High School

often utilizes their facilities for many of their sports banquets, which introduces the community to their fellowship. Oak Ridge has been in their current facility since 2006 and has experienced tremendous growth during this time They were recently recognized as being one of the top 2% of Texas churches for their monetary support to the Cooperative Program. Pastor Cooper said that “While where has been much discussion surrounding that stance a church should take in this area, I am proud that our membership has remained faithful to sacrificially giving to the missional roots of our denomination and our commitment to see the love of Jesus Christ shared around the world.” Please be in prayer for Oak Ridge Baptist Church as they move in their next season of growth and ministry. Their hope is that the church will follow His plan.
