Bullard T3NIMH batteries are specifically designed to operate in Bullard Thermal Imager products and accessories in order to deliver consistent, reliable, and measurable power over a long life when properly used, maintained, and stored. Several thirdparty battery manufacturers make rechargeable batteries for use in various brands of thermal imagers, including Bullard Thermal Imagers. However, Bullard does not authorize, provide specifications for, or endorse the production of thirdparty batteries advertised for use in Bullard Thermal Imagers. Bullard cannot and does not recommend or warrant the use of thirdparty thermal imager batteries in Bullard Thermal Imager products or accessories. Any damages to Bullard Thermal Imagers or Thermal Imager Accessories resulting from the use of thirdparty thermal imager batteries will not be covered under the Bullard Thermal Imager Warranty. There are several key differences between Bullard T3NIMH Thermal Imager batteries and thirdparty thermal imager batteries: Battery Housing Bullard T3NIMH batteries are molded out of the same highheat Ultem® thermoplastic used in the production of Bullard Thermal Imagers and Bullard Fire Helmets. Thirdparty thermal imager batteries do not use Ultem thermoplastic and are typically made using some form of ABS plastic, which can begin to melt at approximately 212°F. We have confirmed this in our lab. In a heat tolerance test, we exposed two thirdparty thermal imager batteries and one Bullard T3NIMH battery to 350°F heat for 15 minutes (see Figs. 1 3). The thirdparty batteries melted and deformed severely enough to render them unusable. Deformation such as this can damage your thermal imager. The Bullard T3NIMH battery sustained no damage from this test and performed normally when used in a Bullard Thermal Imager and charger unit. Fig. 1 Fig. 2 Fig. 3

Overview Bullard T3NIMH Thermal Imager batteries utilize a high‐heat Ultem® thermoplastic outer housing that protects specially procured nickel metal hydride (NiMH) rechargeable battery cells.  Bullard T3NIMH batteries are specifically designed to operate in Bullard Thermal Imager products and accessories in order to deliver consistent, reliable, and measurable power over a long life when properly used, maintained, and stored.

Several third‐party battery manufacturers make rechargeable batteries for use in various brands of thermal imagers, including Bullard Thermal Imagers.  However, Bullard does not authorize, provide specifications for, or endorse the production of third‐party batteries advertised for use in Bullard Thermal Imagers.

Bullard cannot and does not recommend or warrant the use of third‐party thermal imager batteries in Bullard Thermal Imager products or accessories.

Any damages to Bullard Thermal Imagers or Thermal Imager Accessories resulting from the use of third‐party thermal imager batteries will not be covered under the Bullard Thermal Imager Warranty.

There are several key differences between Bullard T3NIMH Thermal Imager batteries and third‐party thermal imager batteries:

Battery Housing Bullard T3NIMH batteries are molded out of the same high‐heat Ultem® thermoplastic used in the production of Bullard Thermal Imagers and Bullard Fire Helmets.  Third‐party thermal imager batteries do not use Ultem thermoplastic and are typically made using some form of ABS plastic, which can begin to melt at approximately 212°F.  We have confirmed this in our lab.  In a heat tolerance test, we exposed two third‐party thermal imager batteries and one Bullard T3NIMH battery to 350°F heat for 15 minutes (see Figs. 1 ‐ 3).  The third‐party batteries melted and deformed severely enough to render them unusable.  Deformation such as this can damage your thermal imager.  The Bullard T3NIMH battery sustained no damage from this test and performed normally when used in a Bullard Thermal Imager and charger unit.

Americas: Europe: Asia-Pacific: E.D. Bullard Company Bullard GmbH Bullard Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd. 1898 Safety Way Lilienthalstrasse 12 LHK Building Cynthiana, KY 41031-9303 53424 Remagen • Germany 701, Sims Drive, #04-03 • Singapore 387383 Toll free: 877-BULLARD (285-5273) Tel: +49-2642 999980 Tel: +65-6745-0556 • Fax: +65-6745-5 Tel: 859-234-6616 • Fax: 859-234-8987 Fax : +49-2642 9999829 www.bullard.com www.bullard.com www.bullardextrem.com Page 2 of 2

Bullard T3NIMH batteries are ultrasonically welded around the upper perimeter to make sure that the batteries are water‐tight and always slide smoothly in and out of the thermal imager and accessories.  Third‐party thermal imager batteries are typically glued in several places but not welded.  This allows the third‐party thermal imager batteries to swell and shrink (especially when exposed to heat.  See Figs. 1 ‐ 3) and may make it difficult to get it in and out of the imager.  Furthermore, third‐party thermal imager batteries can also be susceptible to water damage, which can lead to corrosion inside the battery, eventual failure, and put them at risk of a short circuit or power surge that could damage your thermal imager or accessories.

Internal Circuitry Bullard T3NIMH batteries have a reverse polarity diode circuit on the terminals on the charge side of the battery pack that prevents the batteries from short circuiting or discharging an electric surge that could damage your thermal imager or your thermal imager accessories.  We have yet to find a reverse polarity diode or any similar form of short circuit/surge protection in our testing of third‐party thermal imager batteries.

Also, Bullard T3NIMH batteries contain an internal thermal switch which protects them from overheating and causing damage to the battery cells or charger unit.  Some third‐party thermal imager batteries may include a thermal switch.  However, in our tests, the third‐party thermal imager batteries we have found to include a thermal switch have it set 50°F to 70°F or more higher than the setting specified in our product designs.  This means that the battery cells in third‐party thermal imager batteries may achieve higher temperatures than in the Bullard T3NIMH batteries which could potentially lead to damage of the battery itself or charger units.  Battery Cell Quality Bullard has three certified battery cell providers that guarantee that the battery cells used in the production of Bullard T3NIMH batteries are fresh (< 6 months old).  Furthermore, Bullard T3NIMH battery cells are certified “Automotive Grade” quality.  Third‐party thermal imager batteries may not (and often do not) carry the same guarantees for battery cell quality and freshness.

Battery Life Indicator The battery life indicator LEDs on Bullard Thermal Imagers are designed to work with Bullard T3NIMH battery cells.  Bullard T3NIMH battery cells have a known and predictable “discharge rate”.  It is this discharge rate that the Bullard Thermal Imager battery life indicator LEDs are set to measure and follow.  Third‐party thermal imager batteries are constructed with different battery cells which have different or unknown discharge rates.  The different discharge rates of third‐party thermal imager batteries can make the battery life indicator LEDs unreliable.
