Team - Introduction and Significant Activities

Team - Airport Maintenance

Technical, Engineering and Maintenance Department is responsible

for maintenance upkeep as well as for the post AOD (Air port operation day)

construction activities, with updated design, as per suggested amendments to increase

the service level in the air port. They also perform critical daily operations involved with

utility services in which experienced technical engineering staff is engaged to handle

highly advanced systems & machineries installed at the airport. Team is a care taker of

Bengaluru International air port. Their maintenance activity covers complete 4000

acres of land area as required to be maintained as per international regulations, It

includes air side as well as land side responsibilities. The activities for upkeep has

special focus on runway, taxiway, aircraft stands at apron, runway lighting system,

High Voltage power network, air side nav-aid buildings and operation/ serviceability of

the equipments installed in it, land side roads, parking, centralized HVAC for almost all

buildings. The area of activity not only covers operation/providing of utility services

( like water supply, rain water storm water drains, sewage collection and treatment,

power supply to buildings, fire water pumping ) but also keeping the service level high.

The departmental activities are not limited to Infrastructural engineering installations

but main elements of great concern in daily air port operation like nature conservation

& greenery, prevention of bird strike & cleaning, wild life conservation also.

Team has taken up initiatives in making group of expert engineers working on

Making of specifications, Team LEED Certification, Team ISO, Team SAP PM

implementation, Team - social activity and many more. Team Engineering has

prepared specifications focusing on generalized project requirements. The stand alone

document gives detailed technical information of the requirements of BIAL. It not only

gives work description but also will be referred in future for confirming the quality

checks also.

Runway maintenance, is one of the main weekly maintenance activity

performed on the airport covers almost all critical area.

Weekly maintenance activities like runway

maintenance are performed as per described

protocols, guidelines as mentioned in Annexure of

Aerodrome maintenance manual. Aerodrome

Maintenance Manual is a guiding documented

protocol for the Maintenance Department

personnel of Bangalore International Airport in

ensuring effective maintenance of various airport facilities in a condition which does not

impair the safety, regularity or efficiency of air navigation. Preventive maintenance

programs and procedures have been worked out in line with the recommendations of

Annexure 14- Chapter – 10, DGCA Civil Aviation Requirement, Series ‘B’ Part I- capter

-10 and ICAO Airport Service Manual Part9 -

Airport Maintenance Practices. Various

recommendations of ICAO design Manuals,

Various FAA Series 150 Advisory Circulars,

Indian Electricity Rules, Various IS Publications,

Industry standards, Local regulations etc have

also been adhered to while deriving various

preventive maintenance schedules.

Subsequently, 18 Aerodrome Maintenance Manual containing detailed equipment

descriptions, maintenance procedures for various facilities, equipment, system,

buildings etc. were also in practice since February 08.

Maintenance manuals contain thorough details of the respective area of

operation of the respective division. They also cover the need of co-ordination/ co-

operation among various divisions required for performing an activity. The clear cut

picture of activity execution in the form of standard operating procedure, Emergency

operating procedure not only completes the desired work in limited time but also

gives the rated quality level as per international standards of air port operation.

More than 500 Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Emergency

Operating Procedure (EOPs) have been published and implemented so far. All

SOPs and EOPs are part of Maintenance Manual- Annexure as Appendices.

Runway maintenance is one of them. The closure of runway maintenance is not

an innovative work but it combines close inspection of all parts of runway civil

works, painting and markings, air field lightings with the suggestions. The activity

incorporate - successful reform produced from the time tested solutions, - The

corrective feeling of enthusiastic engineers given ideas and to familiarizes

contractual work force with the critical nature and type of work available. It also

strengthen the installations as some times observed weakening due to balance

works of installation contractor left un-attended because of minor in nature, non

priority item, lack of supervision.

In the run way maintenance activity a complete fleet equipped with modern

equipments, preplanned/ perfect co-ordination among various divisions execute

pressure water jetting system (Track jet) for

rubber removal. The optimum friction characters

for safe operations is the deciding

factor of rubber removal /cleaning

of runway. Pavement repairs/

layer replacement work is an activity performed under supervision of airside civil division. The smooth

surface finish and friction values are the denominators. High level co-ordination between expertise and

machinery operators have been established to made available all the equipments / raw material at site on

time during the runway maintenance slot. Execution as well as supervision of multiple work in a pre

decided time is a common phenomenon among teams participating in runway maintenance. Shoulder and

basic strip maintenance is also a need of

time after the rainy season. It requires heavy

earthwork with proper spreading, leveling and

compaction in predefined span of time. Close

supervision for surface distress

mapping, core cutting (if required),

evaluation and testing are the parallel

activities to improve the sustainability. It

will be a key factor for deciding the

implementation strategy and direction of resource mobilization. The weekly runway maintenance work also

has Airfield lighting maintenance as one of the regular activity performed. A team equipped with testing

equipment is deployed to check healthiness of runway lighting system. A team of technicians & engineer

works here on runway to maintain the

serviceability as 100%. A 2.5 hour runway

maintenance session ends with

a De-briefing session to share

the observations, status review and planning for the next week. The details about the teams are as
