PATIENT TREATMENT AREAS
ML2144 Series 4
THE ECONOMICAL ALTERNATIVE
In tro duc t ion
Hospitals have undergone a dramatic trans for ma tion
in the past 20 years. The de vel op ment of less
intrusive medical techniques has meant that patient
re cov ery times have been greatly reduced. As a
result, day surgery clinics are now a fea ture of
almost all hospitals.
The hospital environment too, is now a less
intrusive one. No longer clinical and old, patient
accommodation today is often of hotel standard.
Although there is a greater reliance on hi-tech
support equipment, this is now designed to blend
into the surroundings, creating a more relaxed
environment for both patients and medical staff.
The Medilec Range of hospital equipment has
been designed to meet this growing demand for
hospital services and equipment that are attractive
and less in tim i dat ing.

MEETING THE HIGH STANDARDS
All the ML2144 Series electrical accessories comply with
the relevant Australian Standards for electrical safety (as
well as standards for patient treatment areas) including
AS/NZS 3003 - “Electrical installations: patient treatment
areas of hospitals and medical and dental practices”.
ML2144 SERIES
Now an impressive part of the Medilec range, the
ML2144 Series is a range of mounting brackets that
allow the Medilec ML2164 fl ush metal plate medical
service panels to fi t onto surface mounted joinery
(supplied by others). The resulting surface mounted
medical service panel system is an economical system
that allows the designer to develop whatever joinery
profi le they require.
The ML2144 Series mounting brackets along with the
Medilec ML2164 fl ush mount medical service panels
incorporate the modular Medilec ML2000 and Clipsal
2000 range of electrical accessories, as well as the
various OEM products based on the Clipsal 2000 format,
which include nurse call systems and gas outlets etc.
4
Features & Benef i t s
Economical when compared to other surface mount
medical service panel systems.
Limitless joinery/enclosure designs due to the fl exibility
of using MDF or equivalent material.
Standard modular 1 to 4 gang fascias can butt together
either horizontally or vertically to produce special length/
height panels.
The ability to integrate the extensive range of modular
Medilec ML2000 and Clipsal 2000 Series accessories,
and OEM 2000 Series nurse call systems and gas outlets.
Grid mounted accessories allows for individual access to
each accessory.
A choice of fascia fi nishes and colours including natural
high grade stainless steel and powdercoated fi nishes.
Surface mounted systems provide better acoustic and
fi re rating characteristics than a recessed system.
Surface mounted systems provide less wall preparation
than a recessed system, which can interfere with internal
wall studs, especially if long panels are required.
Surface mounted systems provide an easy means to
cover existing wall cavities in retro fi t installations,
especially if walls are of brick construction.

A S / NZS 3003 : ELEC TRIC AL INSTALL ATIONS -
PATIENT TREATMENT AREAS OF HOSPITALS AND
MEDIC AL AND DENTAL PR AC TICES
The ML2144 Series product range is designed to meet
the requirements of AS/NZS 3003. AS/NZS 3003 sets out
the specialist electrical installation requirements often
found in the following premises.
Hospitals
Medical Practices
Dental Practices
Physiotherapy Practices
The areas within these premises that would need to
meet AS/NZS 3003 are classifi ed as Body or Cardiac
Protected Areas. The procedures carried out to classify
these areas as Body or Cardiac Protected are as follows:
Within Body Protected Areas procedures are carried
out where a patient is connected to an item of
electromedical equipment which reduces the impedance
of the skin by either electrode paste or by the entrance
of conducting fl uids, metal needles, saline fi lled
catheters etc.
Within Cardiac Protected Areas the same procedures
are carried out as in the Body Protected Areas but also
procedures where a patient has an electrical conductor
placed within the heart or is likely to come in contact
with the heard eg. electrical wires such as cardiac pacing
electrodes and intracardiac ECG electrodes, or insulated
tubes fi lled with conducting fl uids.

ENCLOSURE CONSTRUC TION
The surface mount joinery (supplied by others) enables the
architect limitless enclosure designs due to the fl exibility of
using MDF or an equivalent material. For instance individual
panels can be mounted end to end on a long length of
horizontal joinery or they can be mounted top to bottom
on vertical joinery.
Architects and joinery manufactures must follow these
simple guidelines when designing and manufacturing
the MDF enclosure, which are:
Enclosure dimensions:
a. MDF Material Thickness - 18mm (min)
b. Enclosure Height (internal) - 155mm (min)
c. Enclosure Depth - 55mm (min)
There are two exceptions to these limitations, which are:
If wiring and gas piping are to run within the
enclosure rather than the wall, then the height
and depth dimensions will need to increase.
The depth will reduce if an alternative semi recessed
enclosure is used that consists of only the 18mm
(min) MDF panel mounted directly to the wall
surface. The accessories being semi recessed into
the wall.
Prior to the enclosure being mounted to the wall the
ML2144 mounting brackets will need to be screwed to
the rear of the enclosure. Refer to the following points
for correct installation.
Standard 1 to 4 gang fascias can either be butted
together or spaced apart to produce special length
fascias. If they are required to be butted together
then simply butt together the corresponding
ML2144 mounting brackets, as they are the same
size as the fascia.
Prior to the brackets being installed onto the
enclosure each bracket will require a cut out in the
enclosure for the grid assembly to fi t within (refer
to table). A handy feature incorporated into the
mounting bracket design is the central cut out. It is
the same dimension as the grid that will be mounted
to the bracket therefore it can be used as a guide to
make sure the enclosure cut out is of adequate size.

MOUNTING BRACKETS
Features
The 1 to 4 gang brackets are the same size as the
corresponding fascias. Brackets can quickly and
easily be butted together horizontally or vertically
which in turn butts together the fascias to produce
special length/height panels.
The central cut of the bracket is the same dimension
as the grid that will be mounted to it therefore the
cut-out can be used as a guide to make sure the
enclosure cut-out is of adequate size to allow the
grid to fi t.
