Weed Control forWinter Crops

Work on the tillage fields has started to slow down atlast after what you could call a topsy turvy back end. After some very unsettled weather the last of the SpringBarley and Spring Wheat was cut. Then the weathertook up for most of the bean harvest with farmers get-ting to harvest at good moistures.

No sooner had the combines been put away than the plough was in thefield and the whole cycle has started again.

The good weather has meant that there are good sowings of Winter Bar-ley, Wheat and Oats. With all crops being drilled in good conditions givingthe crop the best start possible. It is now up to the grower and variety todo their part.

Weed control in Wheat and Barley is well under way with robust ratesneeded to help control the increasing grass problem in Ireland be it sterileBrome or Black Grass.

Flight, IPU, Firebird, DFF and Stomp Aqua are the main products ofchoice. Contact your Quinns rep for rates and programmes. Winter Oatsis doing well and if not sprayed yet 0.25ltr H/A of DFF will help controlBroad Leaf Weal’s.

Winter O.S.R that has not had a herbicide needs to get a robust rate ofAstro Kerb when temperatures drop below 8 degrees. The addition ofBoron now will also help drive the crop into the spring.

All winter crops need to be watched closely for slug damage and treatedwith good rates of Trax Slug Pellets.

Now is a good time to line up your soil samples and get them done beforethe application of spring fertiliser. This is a good way of maximising yourreturn on investment and keeping your soil’s fertility in balance.
