deeloped the concept o# Automatic 0roduct >denti#ication By passing a high

intensity light through some -orse Code. +hich gradually deeloped to Bar

coding system #rom the year, (4. Soon the "arcoding technology opened #or

pu"lic use #rom, (D/.

>n (/4, the #irst the #irst "ar coding 1as introduced to the retail 1orld on a pac9et

o# +rigley@s 7um. *hirty eight years later the num"er o# applications #or "ar code

technology has eploded, going #ar "eyond grocery stores and retail. Read "et1een

the lines and you 1ill see "ar code technology popping up in ne1 and unusual

places such as hospitals, la1 #irms, retail stores, security, and 6epartment o#

6e#ense, corporate o##ices, li"raries, and rental cars.

Barcodes are mostly scanned "y a Special aser light 1hich is generated 1hen a

laser light is #all on a rotating polygon an mirror.

A#ter #alling o# the laser light on the "arcode, the laser light gets a"sor"ed on the

"lac9 portions & gets re#lected on the 1hite portions. *hus the re#lected light is

#urther analysed "y a photodiode 1hich acts as a receier & 7enerates a +ae

#orm. *his 7enerated +ae#orm is then #urther processed "y a decoder & then the

#inal codeHoutput comes.

>n "arcoding system each character is represented "y a pattern o# 1ide and narro1

"ars. A "arcode reader uses a photo sensor to conert the "arcode into an electrical

signal as it moes across a "arcode. *he scanner then measures the relatie 1idths

o# the "ars and spaces, translates the di##erent patterns "ac9 into regular characters,

and sends them on to a computer or porta"le terminal.
