Review Agenda with staff. Today we will spend about three hours together learning about how technology can and will support your students as they learn grade level content knowledge.2WelcomeA little bit about

Cassandra TrawitzTeacher, Administrator, Mom15 years in educationUndergrad and Graduate at WMUCurrent Graduate studies at MSUThree years as technology teacher

Welcome staff to Day 5, Technology. Today they will use Chromebooks (one for each person) to access and utilize tools.A little bit about myself.Good News: ask people in audience to share some good news. (this could be a personal, work related or other piece of good news) Have no more than 4 people share.3ObjectivesUnderstand that students need access to grade level content in all subjects even if they struggle with reading and writingLearn about technology based resources to enable access to social studies content for all studentsLearn how to use technology resources to improve accessibility of content in social studiesImprove your own lesson by using one or more resources you learn about today

9:10 AM INTRODUCTION TO LEARNING OBJECTIVESDiscuss the learning objectives and how they apply to teaching a diverse group of students learn content material at grade level.4Name That PersonDivide into two teamsWrite 5 things on cardCollect and place in two pilesDraw one card from other team pileEach team tries to name person Points for getting correct on first try!Five points if they get it on the first clue, then 4, 3, 2, 1, 0. The team with the most points wins.

Now that you have spent some additional time with the people in this room, you should be able to guess the person when told 5 facts about an individual.ICE BREAKER ACTIVITY: NAME THAT PERSONDivide into two teams. Give each person a blank piece of card. Ask them to write five little known facts about themselves on their card. Include all leaders in this game too. For example, I have a pet iguana, I was born in Iceland, my favorite food is spinach, my grandmother is called Doris and my favorite color is vermillion. Collect the cards into two team piles. Draw one card from the opposing team pile. Each team tries to name the person in as few clues as possible. Five points if they get it on the first clue, then 4, 3, 2, 1, 0. The team with the most points wins. (Note: if you select the most obscure facts first, it will increase the level of competition and general head scratching!)

5Technology Self-Assessment

9:40 AMTECHNOLOGY SELF ASSESSMENTStaff will answer questions to determine their level of comfort with technology: programs, hardware, mobile and website programs. Hand in self-assessment.Resource: http://www.doe.mass.edu/odl/standards/sa_tool.html6Supporting Content Instruction with Technology Integration for Struggling Students

Students at all ability levels can struggle with social studies content. What occurs when a teacher limits his/her resources to textbooks, handouts and videos.Students learn best when the are engaged in hands-on, interactive learning where they feel empowered to learn.Today you will learn about three tools:Google Earth: Google Lit TripsQuizlet: vocabulary practice and supportGoogle Read and Write: use any website at any reading level.9:50 AMSUPPORTING CONTENT INSTRUCTION WITH TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATIONDiscussion about how students of all ability levels can struggle with Social Studies content. Students who are below grade level readers will not be able to access material and vocabulary when taught primarily from print based lessons. When teachers limit their resources to textbooks, printouts and videos, the students do not benefit. Today I am going to show you three resources you can use in early elementary, using a third grade lesson plan on Michigan Geography, that students who are struggling or uninterested in social studies will get excited about. The tools we will use today are Google Earth, Quizlet and Good Read and Write.

7Brain Break

We will take a 15 minute brain break. Presenter sets up clock for 15:00 and keeps timer on the board so staff who move in and out know how much time is left. (this is just an example- the clock would tick down the full 15 minutes. I only demonstrate about 30 seconds) Once timer goes off, teachers will regroup and PD will continue.8Google Earth | GeographyGoogle Lit ToursStudents take a virtual journey to places they are studying in classEasy to use.Create to reinforce map skills or support literacy.Students fly to different locations as if they were on a field trip.

10:25 AMGoogle Earth to Support GeographyGoogle Earth is a three dimensional interactive map. It is a program downloaded through google, right to your computer. Once installed, open Google Earth and type in your home address. Type in another address you can remember. Now type in the name of the place you last vacationed. Google Earth takes you anywhere in the world! Google Earth can also take your students anywhere in the world. Today I will demonstrate where your students can go in Michigan as they learn about landforms and bodies of water. When you visit the website for Google Lit Tours, you will find multiple tours based on literary classics.Staff will watch demonstration of quick Michigan Geography Lit tour.

9Quizlet | Content VocabularyQuizlet allows students to practice vocabulary words independently. Quizlet is interactive and engaging.Vocabulary words and definitions are read to students when they click on text.Students are able to visualize the definition of the word by looking at each picture.

10:55 AMQuizlet to Support Content VocabularyTeaching vocabulary to students can be very difficult, especially for students who already struggle with sight words. Using strategies where students can hear the word and definition, see a picture representing the vocabulary word and interact with an engaging activity to reinforce the word and its definition. Quizlet is easy to use and students interact with the words at home.10Google Read and Write

11:15 AMWeb Resources to Support Content Literacy: Google Read and WriteGoogle Read and Write is a tool for any user to access content on a website. One of the most difficult things as a student who is struggling to read is to find out you must independently look up information and record it for a report you are writing. This is a nightmare for teacher as well. The once independent research activity has turned into a fiasco of questions and frustration. Good Read and Write can be installed is a fantastic tool to have on all computers when students are completing research projects. Students can have all the information read out loud to them and highlight key facts on the site, collecting the information on a google doc. This is an amazing resource.

Hover Speech: Clicking on this tool will turn on the text to speech feature when you hover over the sentence you want read to you. Hovering over the words automatically starts the voice, allowing students who are not able to read get the information on the website.Dictionary: Highlight the word you do not know, click the dictionary icon and a new window appears with multiple definitions. Click on the sound icon to hear the definition read to you.Picture Dictionary: Same as the dictionary, but the window that pops up shows pictures to define the word, not text. The pictures are a bit simple, but it would help students who are ELL and LD.The play, pause and stop buttons control text-to-speech for the entire page to be read aloud.Fact Finder: highlight a word and google will look it up for you.Translator: translates the highlighted word in many languagesHighlighters: highlight and collect all your information with this tool. After you highlight your text (with many colors to categorize the information) you can use the tools to lookup vocabulary words, organize them or simplify the text. Each of these uses a new google doc, displaying the information separate from the website.

11Assessment & Wrap UpLets put it all into practice!Find a lesson plan from the MAISA website, Grade 3 (or your grade)Choose a tool to support a learning objective.Spend a few minutes working with the tool.Finish as homework!

11:45 AMAssessment and Wrap UpTeachers will choose a lesson plan from the following website: http://gomaisa-public.rubiconatlas.org/Atlas/Develop/UnitMap/View/Default?SourceSiteID=&UnitID=13476&YearID=2015&CurriculumMapID=44&Teachers will then pick one of the tree tools to implement with a lesson they chose from third grades website. Use one of the three tools to develop a brief lesson plan based on the MAISA 12Homework ChallengeWant to go further with technology? Check out this module from IRIS: Assistive Technology.
