Breakthrough Made in Acrylic Acid Sewage Treatment Technology

Yan Xiaoqiang, Liu Qingqing

The acrylic acid sewage treatment station, with an investment of over RMB10 million from Acrylic Acid

Branch of Zhenghe Petrochemical Group, met the relevant national standards for all its exterior discharge indexes through 72 consecutive hours of monitoring by an inspection and acceptance working group, marking a successful application of biochemical technology to acrylic acid sewage treatment, thus further enriching acrylic acid sewage treatment technology. The facility, with a daily sewage treatment capacity of 150 tons, can decrease discharged pollutants by 65,664m3 annually and decrease COD discharge by 2,626.56 tons. Using an EGSB reactor, an advanced anaerobic unit at present, the facility introduces advanced biological technology in acrylic acid sewage treatment during reinforced treatment of high-concentration organic sewage. According to estimation, treating a ton of sewage with this new process can save a cost of around RMB300 compared to the traditional process of incineration. Meanwhile, the unit is equipped with a set of 120kW methane generating units to generate 2,700kWh of power every day using the methane produced from sewage treatment, which not only satisfied the power usage of the sewage treatment station, but also saved power charge of RMB1,700 a day and an annual power charge of over RMB600,000 for the company.

Zhonghao Chenguang Research Institute of Chemical Industry successfully produced 20 batches of environment-

friendly fluorous rubber goods, with their major index PFOA (perfluorooctanoate) content meeting the production requirement of environment-friendly fluorous rubber and their physical properties meeting traditional fluorous rubber requirements according to a test by the authorities. This allows a significant transformation from traditional production to environmental production of fluorous rubber. All the fluorous production units of Zhonghao Chenguang have already been transformed into environment-friendly fluorous rubber production units.

SRDICI Makes Breakthrough in Making Hydrogen from Coalbed Gas by

Autothermic ConversionXie Zhaoping

A breakthrough was made in the key technology for "hydrogen production from coalbed gas autothermic conversion," a

project under the national "Eleventh Five-Year Plan" Technology R&D Program undertaken by the Southwest Research & Design Institute of Chemical Industry (SRDICI). Methane in coalbed gas is an excellent raw material for hydrogen. A reaction of methane and water vapor caused by the heat from combustion of oxygen and methane in coalbed gas produces a mixture of hydrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and nitrogen. All impurities are eliminated to produce pure hydrogen through PSA (pressure swing adsorption). In the technical process of making hydrogen from coalbed gas, steam conversion and conversion reaction are both mature technologies, and the key is the R&D on the catalyst for autothermic conversion. In recent years, the institute has determined the catalyst formula and completed pilot development through repeated technological tests. Specialists analyzed that, industrialization of the project of hydrogen production from coalbed gas containing intermediate methane, would not only provide hydrogen users with economical hydrogen sources, but also solve the problems of environmental pollution and resource wasting caused by discharge of coalbed gas.

In road tests at large domestic mines, the g iant a l l - s tee l t i res manufactured by Haohua South China (Gui l in) Rubber Co., Ltd. have withstood severe local conditions such as high temperature, heavy rain and great day-night temperature swings. The latest data show that the giant all-steel tires have run an accumulated 5,500 kilometers and 430 hours, and all indexes of the tires

like "air pressure, tire temperature, abrasion and load deflection" have been normal. The tires are to be put into bulk production and into the market. (Photo by Song Yu)

Zhonghao ChenguangDevelops Environment-friendly

Fluorous Rubber Goods

PFOA is largely used as a dispersant for production of fluorous resin and fluorous rubber. Since the "Teflon Event" in July 2004, developed countries like the U.K. and the U.S. as well as the European Union successively worked out counter-measures and policies to restrict and cut the production and use of PFOA and relevant products, and thus formed market and technology barriers. However, the institute grasped the trend, organized scientific research elite to seek a PFOA alternative by all means and to make a great number of selection experiments, and preliminarily chose a chemical substance for dispersion polymerization. Following the experiments, it successively tackled numerous problems in technology and equipment during chemical production of scale, and eventually took the lead in achieving production success. Based on that, the institute stepped up R&D for applications, completed research on the application of the PFOA alternative to production of fluorous rubber, and successfully produced the first batch of environment - friendly fluorous rubber. It is the first of its kind in China, marking monumental progress in production technology for fluorous rubber. The first batch has been delivered to customers for use.
