2014. Journal of Intelligent & Robotic Systems. This paper presents a decentralized algorithm for areapartition in surveillance missions that ensures information propagation among all the robots in the team. Therobots have short communication ranges compared to the size of the area to be covered, so a distributed one-to-one coordination schema has been adopted. The goal of the team is to minimize the elapsed time betweentwo consecutive observations of any point in the area. A grid-shape area partition strategy has been designedto guarantee that the information gathered by any robot is shared among all the members of the team.

2014. Journal of Intelligent & Robotic Systems. The growing social and economic interest in new unmannedaircraft systems (UASs) applications demands that UASs operate beyond the segregated airspace they arecurrently able to fly. However, UAS operations in non-segregated airspace should be regulated by aeronauticalauthorities before UASs can share airspace with manned aircraft. It has been a challenge for regulatoryauthorities to define these regulations because they do not understand the topic well. In addition, there is noconsensus in the academic community regarding UAS concepts, such as taxonomy and features. This studyproposes guidelines that could support UAS regulations for the future integration of autonomous UASs into theGlobal Air Traffic Management System (GATM).

2014. Journal of Intelligent & Robotic Systems. The wireless sensor network (WSN) technology have beenevolving very quickly in recent years. Sensors are constantly increasing in sensing, processing, storage, andcommunication capabilities. In many WSNs that are used in environmental, commercial and militaryapplications, the sensors are lined linearly due to the linear nature of the structure or area that is beingmonitored making a special class of these networks; We defined these in a previous paper as Linear SensorNetworks (LSNs), and provided a classification of the different types of LSNs.

2014. Journal of Intelligent & Robotic Systems. We present a quadrotor Micro Aerial Vehicle (MAV) equippedwith four cameras, which are arranged in two stereo configurations. The MAV is able to perform stereomatching for each camera pair on-board and in real-time, using an efficient sparse stereo method. In case ofthe camera pair that is facing forward, the stereo matching results are used for a reduced stereo SLAM system. The other camera pair, which is facing downwards, is used for ground plane detection and tracking. Hence, weare able to obtain a full 6DoF pose estimate from each camera pair, which we fuse with inertial measurementsin an extended Kalman filter.

2014. Microelectronic Engineering. We have developed superhydrophobicand superoleophobic surfaces based on ZnO nano-in-micro hierarchicalstructures on various large-area substrates. To fabricate the surfaces, ultraviolet nanoimprint lithography, a simple process enabling large-areapatterning, was used in combination with hydrothermal synthesis. Thewetting properties of the surfaces were analyzed by contact and slidingangle measurements with various solvents and by experimentsdetermining self-cleaning properties. These analyses confirmed thesuperhydrophobicity and superoleophobicity of the fabricated surfaces.

2014. Expert Systems with Applications. In cloud computing environments in software as a service (SaaS)level, interoperability refers to the ability of SaaS systems on one cloud provider to communicate with SaaSsystems on another cloud provider. One of the most important barriers to the adoption of SaaS systems incloud computing environments is interoperability. A common tactic for enabling interoperability is the use of aninteroperability framework or model. During the past few years, in cloud SaaS level, various interoperabilityframeworks and models have been developed to provide interoperability between systems. The syntacticinteroperability of SaaS systems have already been intensively researched. However, not enoughconsideration has been given to semantic interoperability issues.

2014. Journal of Parallel and Distributed Computing. Preserving anonymity and privacy of customer actionswithin a complex software system, such as a cloud computing system, is one of the main issues that should beaddressed to boost private computation outsourcing. In this paper, we propose a coordination paradigm, namely oblivious assignment with mm slots of a resource RR (with m1m1), allowing processes to compete inorder to get a slot of RR, while ensuring at the same time both fairness in the assignment of resource slots andthat no process learns which slot of RR is assigned to a specific process.

2014. Journal of Biomedical Informatics. Proliferation of healthinformation technologies creates opportunities to improve clinical andpublic health, including high quality, safer care and lower costs. Tomaximize such potential benefits, health information technologies mustreadily and reliably exchange information with other systems. However, evidence from public health surveillance programs in two states suggeststhat operational clinical information systems often fail to use availablestandards, a barrier to semantic interoperability. Furthermore, analysis ofexisting policies incentivizing semantic interoperability suggests they havelimited impact and are fragmented.

The time-saving but often problematic practice of copy and pasting within anelectronic health record (EHR) demands the creation of best practices developed by private and public sectorstakeholders, a new AHIMA position paper recommends. The copy and paste functionality that exists in manyEHRs—also known as “cloning,” “carrying forward,” and “identical documentation”—should only be allowed insettings where there are strong technical and administrative controls, “which include organizational policies andprocedures, requirements for participation in user training and education, and ongoing monitoring,” the positionpaper states.

2014. Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology. Teledermatology makes 3 promises: better, cheaper, and faster dermatologic care. It is “better” because, although it cannot offer as much to the patient as atraditional visit, it extends the dermatologist's reach to places and in ways not previously possible as a result oftime and place limitations; it is “cheaper and faster” because it has the potential to reduce costs and increaseefficiency for both patients and providers. For teledermatology to fulfill these promises, it must enabledermatologists to improve access by increasing the number of patients evaluated and treated. Increasedpatient access depends on maximizing a scarce resource–dermatologists' time–in part by avoidingunnecessary and time-consuming face-to-face appointments.

Robot-assistedneurorehabilitation often involves networked systems of sensors (“sensoryrooms”) and powerful devices in physical interaction with weak users.Safety is unquestionably a primary concern. Some lightweight robotplatforms and devices designed on purpose include safety properties usingredundant sensors or intrinsic safety design (e.g. compliance andbackdrivability, limited exchange of energy). Nonetheless, the entire“sensory room” shall be required to be fail-safe and safely monitored as asystem at large. Yet, sensor capabilities and control algorithms used infunctional therapies require, in general, frequent updates or re-configurations, making a safety-grade release of such devices hardlysustainable in cost-effectiveness and development time.

2014. Computers and Electronics in Agriculture. Pruning is a laborintensive operation that constitutes a significant component of total appleproduction cost. As growers are adapting simpler, narrower, moreaccessible and productive (SNAP) tree architectures such as the tallspindle fruiting wall system, new opportunities have emerged to reducepruning cost and labor through automated pruning. This work focused onidentification of pruning branches on apple trees in a tall spindlearchitecture. A time-of-flight-of-light-based three dimensional (ToF 3D)camera was used to construct 3D skeletons of apple trees. Pruningbranches were identified in the reconstructed trees using a simplified two-step pruning rule; (i) maintain specified branch spacing and (ii) maintainspecified branch length. Performance of the algorithm was optimized usinga training sample of 10 trees to achieve human worker’s pruning level.

2014. Computers and Electronics in Agriculture. A multiarm roboticharvester is being developed for two-dimensional crops such as melons. Anumber of Cartesian manipulators, mounted in parallel on a rectangularframe, traverse laterally across the crop bed as the frame moves along it.The robotic arms reach down to pick melons and place them on adjacentlateral conveyors. The coordinates of the fruits to be harvested areassumed to be known prior to harvest so that the robot gets a bank oftargets in local coordinates. In this paper, we describe the algorithmsdeveloped and used to plan the assignment of melons to be harvested byeach of a number of arms in a collaborative way so that the maximumnumber of fruits will be harvested by a given number of arms.

2014. Modeling and mapping of cultural ecosystem services (CES)represents a significant gap in ecosystem service research. A GIS-basedmethodological framework was developed and applied to map agriculturalheritage (AH), understood as a non-divisible combination of three culturalservices (dimensions, D): the heritage value associated to a culturallysignificant species (i.e. Chiloé native potato) (D1); the traditional systemsof knowledge of AH keepers (D2); and the social relations among them(D3). The final aim of the study was to provide indicators of the “final”service (AHi, measured in a 0–100 point scale) and its benefits (AHB,measured in US$/ha), capable to display areas where high value farmlandwas located.
