Tecsonic 400

DescriptionTecsonic 400 is a high quality fully flexible acousticducting. It is ideal for use in low and medium pressureventilation and air conditioning systems whereattenuation of duct borne noise is required.

ConstructionTecsonic 400 acoustic flexible ducting is manufacturedwith an inner core constructed from a multi-plyaluminium and polyester laminate to provide a tough yethighly flexible core. This fabric is supported by anencapsulated high tensile steel wire helix at 35mmpitch. The core is continuously perforated with microperforations to enhance the acoustic performance ofTecsonic 400 whilst virtually eliminating the possibility offibre migration. This core is wrapped in a 25mm thickhigh density fibreglass blanket which is overlapped toensure continuity of thermal and acoustic performance. This insulation material is then covered by a toughscruff resistant, reinforced aluminium fabric acting asthe outer jacket and air containing membrane.

This construction results in a highly flexible duct inwhich bends of 1/2D radius can be produced.

SpecificationAcoustic flexible ducting for joints or connections shallbe TECSONIC 400. It shall be manufactured with analuminium/polyester inner core continuously perforatedand wrapped with an overlapped fibreglass blanketcovered by a tough aluminium fabric jacket.

PackagingTecsonic 400 is supplied, as standard, in 10 metrelengths. Each length is individually cartoned andlabelled. Storage space required is kept to a minimumwith a 10 metre length being compressed to 1150mm.

Acoustic Performance

Note: Care should be taken when estimating theattenuation of ducts of different lengths; the results arenot linear. The possibility of noise ‘break-out’ shouldalso be taken into consideration at the design stagesince there may be some noise emission into thesurrounding air space. Wherever possible acousticducting should be installed in a part of the buildingwhere noise break-out is not of concern or above anacoustic/insulated ceiling to prevent noise reaching theoccupied areas.

InstallationFully extend ducting, then cut to exact length requiredusing a sharp knife and pliers. Pull back fibreglassinsulation and tape the inner core to the spigot. Thentape and clamp the outer jacket and inner core to thespigot.

Tecsonic 400S

DescriptionTecsonic 400S is a high quality fully flexible acousticducting with an acoustically transparent interlinerbetween the inner core and fibreglass layers. It is idealfor use in low and medium pressure ventilation and airconditioning systems where attenuation of duct bornenoise is required.

ConstructionTecsonic 400S is constructed in a similar manner toTecsonic 400 (left) but with the addition of anacoustically transparent interliner between the innercore and fibreglass layers. This interliner allows for agood acoustical performance yet shields the airstreamfrom the fibreglass and prevents the possibility of fibremigration into the airstream.

This feature makes Tecsonic 400S especially suitablefor specialist applications e.g. Food preparation, cleanrooms etc. Like Tecsonic 400 this construction stillprovides a highly flexible duct in which bends of 1/2Dradius can be produced.

Fire Test DataBSCP413: 1973 recommends that flexible joints(lengths not normally exceeding 300mm) and flexibleconnections (lengths not exceeding 3.7 metres) shallmeet certain criteria. This is a generally acceptedstandard and is also acceptable in the London area. The requirements are:

1. BS476, Part 6 - Fire Propagation TestThe materials used in the construction of the duct benon-combustible or should have an index ofperformance not exceeding 12, of which not more than6 should derive from the initial period of test.Tecsonic 400 - Passed.

2. BS476, Part 7 - Surface spread of FlameA Class 1 rating must be obtained.Tecsonic 400 achieved a Class 1 rating.

3. BS476, Part 20 - Fire ResistanceA resistance to the penetration of fire of at least 15minutes is required. (Part 20 supersedes Part 8).Tecsonic 400 met this requirement.

4. Smoke and Toxic FumesDucts should not give off excessive quantities of smokewhen burnt. In the event of a fire Tecsonic 400 generates anegligible amount of smoke or toxic gases andcontains no PVC (Tecsonic 400S generates a smallquantity of smoke - it does not contain PVC).

Independent Test DataThe above results are based upon independent testingat Warrington Research Centre, report numbers 44873,44871, 54841, 70103/B, copies of which are availableon request. NB. Tests to BS476 Part 6 and 7 refer toTectherm 400 (formerly Tecflex 435) and are valid sinceidentical materials are used in the construction ofTecsonic 400. Tests to determine static insertion losseswere carried out by Sound Research Laboratories. Theresults detailed were obtained under laboratoryconditions; report numbers C/8947/4051/1 andC/915L/1014, copies of which are available on request.Tests were carried out in accordance withBS4718:1971.

Pressure LossPressure drop in flexible duct varies significantly fromthe data given below if the duct is not fully extendedwhen installed. Typically a duct which is 90% extendedcan result in an increased pressure drop of up to 80%.A duct which is 75% extended could result in apressure drop variance of as much as 200%. Thisinformation applies to all types of flexible duct andillustrates the importance of careful installation. Thepressure loss graph below is based on fully extendedstraight flexible ducting, per metre.

Mounting Instructions -Recommendations

1 Ducting must always be installed fully extended toproduce the best results.

2 Hanging straps should be at least 25mm wide.

3 The distance between supports will vary accordingto the diameter of ducting. As a guide, on straightruns, supports should be at approx. 1 metre centres.Keep duct sag to a minimum.

4 Ensure that when making connections the flexibleduct is not over stressed.

5 Ensure that duct is not in contact with sharp objectswhich may puncture the duct when the system iscommissioned.

6 Ensure that ducting is not placed on un-insulatedsteam or hot process pipes.
