Special to The Star

In its own little corner of the country, nestled against Lake St. Clair, lies the

town of Tecumseh, a charming hub of quaint shops, recreational centres, fan-tastic restaurants and picturesque homes large and small. Its allure is in its own leisurely clock; it’s at once a bucolic and urban space where attractions are plenty.

In 2014, the Town of Tecumseh was recognized by Festivals and Events On-tario as the province’s “Best Festival City” for a town with a population of fewer than 200,000, thanks to the en-thusiasm and dedication of a throng of volunteers who are excited to share their town with visitors and residents alike.

This year, eager to maintain its reputa-tion as a festival mecca, the town of Te-cumseh will be hosting the Victoria Day Weekend Fireworks, the Parking Lot (3 on 3 road hockey tournament) Battle, the Fishing Derby at Lakewood Park, a Taste of Tecumseh Food and Wine Festival, Go

Skateboarding Day, the Tecumseh Terry Fox Run, the Hospice Triathlon, the 2nd Annual Skateboarding Competition, the 2nd Annual Disc Golf Tournament, the 40th Annual Tecumseh Corn Festival and the International Dragon Boat Festival.

Much of the town’s population is ac-tive, and the numerous sports fields, tennis courts, skate park and pickleball courts are often used. Its acclaimed dog park features a unique dog water foun-tain, many benches and accessible as-phalt trails that curve throughout 2.5 acres of land.

Those who love music too are en-deared to the town, which proudly hosts a series of free community concerts that draw in crowds from around the region. From Sunday, June 7 to Saturday, Sep-tember 5, music enthusiasts can enjoy a variety of sounds from local and visiting musicians, including flautist Jeff Kearns, acoustic guitarist Dale Butler, rockers Justin Zuccato and Band and Elvis trib-ute artists Norm Sr., Norm Jr. and Jax of the Ackland family.

On any given night – and especially on Tuesday evenings – throngs of

avid moviegoers pour into Imagine Cin-emas in Lakeshore, eager to take in the sights and sounds of Hollywood.

For general manager Gina Facca, the theatre is a sort of second home, a space which welcomes corporations, families and visitors who are not only fans of the silver screen, but those looking for an al-ternative to traditional banquet halls.

“We’ve set ourselves apart, because not only are we independently and locally owned and operated, our customers will tell you we’re different,” she says confi-dently. “If you ask our customers, they

would tell you it’s our service and the cleanliness of our cinemas, not to mention the entire atmosphere.

“There’s a reason we’ve branded across the area – we have Lakeshore, Leaming-ton, Kitchener and Timmins, all operating under the Imagine brand. And there are three more (theatres) planned into 2016.”

With approximately 1,850 seats, Lake-shore serves as Imagine’s headquarters. Facca says they’ve cornered the market in terms of field trips and school func-tions, and have extended their reach into corporate territory. Businesses often book Lakeshore for town halls and training sessions, or will book a theatre for an

evening for a fun night out for employees.

“One of our greatest strengths is our ac-cessibility,” says Facca. “Whenever you call us, you get a live person. You get a lo-cal person. You’re not stuck in voicemail jail, and you’re not having to call Toronto or another out-of-town corporate office. We are very hands-on.”

Families in particular benefit from

Lakeshore’s kid-friendly atmosphere and competitive concession prices. Through-out March and summer breaks, the theatre often offers $3 children’s movies during matinee show times. “We try to bring kids’ movies back when there aren’t a lot of new children’s releases out,” explains Facca, “and it’s very successful.

“We’re sold out almost every day, ev-ery movie.”

Lakeshore Cinemas also promotes in-dependent movies from local and national filmmakers; Gavin Booth’s The Scare-house premiered here, and The Birder found great success with audiences here. “There’s something to be said about in-dependent filmmakers being given op-portunity for exposure at a locally owned operation,” says Facca. “We’re very supportive of (independent filmmakers) whenever we can be.”

For those with a curiosity in this town’s illustrious history, there is now an ex-

tensive archival system that unveils hun-dreds of handwritten deeds, artifacts and photographs that go back to the mid-19th century.

The new Tecumseh Historical Ar-chives was a labour of love by a team of local researchers who spent nearly a year exploring Tecumseh’s history. Led by project manager Stephen Young, arti-facts, newspapers, photographs and doc-uments were compiled and archived in an effort to preserve the stories of the town. Included in the archives is 40 years of documents and images from the Tecum-seh Corn Festival, as well as every issue of the Tecumseh Tribune, which was dis-tributed throughout the town from 1959 until 2012. A myriad of artifacts, includ-ing household goods, military, police and fire items from throughout Tecumseh, Maidstone, St. Clair Beach and Sand-wich South, have also been catalogued.

In total, over 1,500 artifacts have been collected, researched and photographed.

A joint project of the town of Tecum-seh, the Tecumseh Area Historical Soci-ety and Employment Ontario, with assis-tance from the University of Windsor’s Leddy Library, the development of the online archive was a job creation partner-ship, which offered invaluable training opportunities for those who participated.

Tecumseh CAO Tony Hadded told The Windsor Star that the project enhanced “the quality of historic data and material that is available to residents and busi-nesses and researchers… wanting to learn more about the town and activities related to events that have taken place in town.”

The Tecumseh Historical Archives can be accessed through the University of Windsor’s Leddy Library website, through the County of Essex or online at: www.tecumseharchives.ca.

Now in its 13th year, the International Dragon Boats Race for the Cure has

raised nearly $3 million dollars for its benefactors, which include Windsor Re-gional Hospital, Windsor Regional Breast Health Care, Karmanos Cancer Institute, Hotel Dieu Grace Hospital Foundation, Leamington District Memorial Hospital and Windsor and Essex County Cancer Care Foundation.

When Gerry Orum and Beth Noakes founded this fundraising event nearly a decade and a half ago, they had hopes it would receive significant support from the community, but never dreamed it would have this kind of monumental success.

Noakes, who owned Top Drawer Ca-suals, “wanted to give back to her clien-tele,” explains Orum, “(who) were mostly women. French Dressing Jeans, one of

her clients, was talking about bringing in an event somewhere, and we added a fundraising component, which had one mandate – all money raised had to stay in Windsor-Essex.”

This year, on July 18 and 19, the boats will be off to the races again, with all paddlers meeting on Riverside Dr. at the foot of Manning. Orum says he antici-pates 70 to 80 groups will participate.

“It’s been very rewarding,” says Orum. “Beth and I recognize we’ve been the captains of the ship, but it’s the peo-ple and the companies and the sponsors who are the real heroes of what this event is. Beth and I are so pleased we can say that and love that we have met our com-mitment that money stays here. You can call the hospital and find out what we’re about. We’ve done that because we want people to understand what this event is about and where your dollars are going.”

The Dragon Boat Races are the most popular early sum-mer activity in the Orient, whereever Chinese cultural influences prevails. It is the most important part of the Twan-Wu Festival, the 5th day of the 5th month of the lunar calendar.

According to legend, dur-ing the Warring States pe-riod, 475-222 B.C., the state of Chu had a high-ranking minister of great talent and genius named Chu Yuan. To the west, the state of Chin was determined to seize the state of Chu.

For this reason, feigning a desire for friendly diplomatic ties, the state of Chin invited King Huai to Wukuan, to draw up a treaty. King Huai did not heed Chu Yuan’s cautionary advice and consequently was kidnapped by Chin soldiers and died in the state of Chin. King Huai’s eldest son, King Hsiang, not only failed to consider avenging his father but also acted obsequiously toward the state of Chin. In addition, he believed a slan-

der advanced against Chu Yuan and banished him.

On the 5th day of the 5th month of the lunar calendar, Chu Yuan reached the bank of the Mi Luo River. There, the wise, sad hero commit-ted suicide and threw himself in the river. When the people heard this, they feared the fish in the river would eat Chu Yuan’s body.

Thronging into boats, they rowed out to the middle of the river and threw great quantities of rice into the water to feed the fish, thus hoping that Chu Yuan’s body would be left alone. The search for his body was evolved into present day dragon boat races and the ritual of eating “Tsung Tze”, sticky rice cakes wrapped in bamboo leaves. The Twan-Wu Festival also signals the change from spring to sum-mer and can be traced back to the Chou Dynasty as a folk festival.

In the distant past, farm-ers depended solely on the rain to water their crops.

On this festival day, farm-ers prayed for the “Dragons on the Clouds” to send him rain. They also prayed for the “Dragon of the Seas” to calm the oceans and rivers as floods were common when the mountain snow began to melt. Above the doors of the houses, they hung up long, sword like leaves of the wa-ter willow and mallow to dis-perse evil spirits.

Siung-Huan Powder, arsenic sulphide, was used as a pes-ticide around the house. The red powder was also used to touch the foreheads of boys and give them protective powers. In Japan, Twan-Wu became boy’s day, which ap-pears to be connected to this ancient ritual.

Through the ages, many stories and fairy tales have evolved about this special day, but none surpasses the excitement and fun of the dragon boat races.

Disc golf takes off in Tecumseh

Similar to golf, disc golf involves the elimina-tion of golf clubs and holes, instead utilizing

discs and a disc pole hole, which is a pole that extends from the ground with a basket and chains where the disc can land. Players try to com-plete each hole with the fewest amount of throws, starting at the first of nine or 18 holes; the player with the lowest total cumulative score wins.

For Scott White, president and co-founder of Windsor Essex Disc Golf, there is no better game.

“It’s been a lifelong sport for me; I’ve been playing since I was about 16 and now I’m 35,” says White, who grew up in Ann Arbor, Michi-gan, where the game has been popular since the late 80s. “Even though I’ve been playing for a long time, I can still get better at it. It’s one of those sports that there’s no ceiling – there are always things you can work on.”

White says that at first for many, the game seems like an afterthought, or one that’s not taken very seriously. “People think, ‘Oh yeah, that sounds like fun – golf with a Frisbee,’” he says. “But it has a long lasting effect on you, and when you have that first good shot, it’s ad-dictive, and it makes you want to play more and more.”

White explains that it’s a slow-paced game, one that’s placed with a group of four or six. Currently, the members of Windsor Essex Disc Golf play at Lakewood Park, with the hope of having their own official course someday.

“There are probably 400 courses (through-out the state of Michigan) and there isn’t a sin-gle course in our area,” explains White. “We

want to change that.”For now, the game is growing. It’s a vol-

unteer-driven sport, and the costs to join are minimal. It’s free to play, but for $30, new members will receive membership, a towel and a disc.

“For those who don’t have five or six hours to play a round of golf but who still want to be outdoors, relax and have a great time walking from hole to hole, this is a great idea,” says White. “It’s no less challenging. It really gets you hooked. There’s nothing quite like it.”

Think of a small town, and it’s unlike-ly that the first thing you think of is a

thriving, complex core of boutiques and shops that boast designer dresses, daz-zling jewelry and accessories and one-of-a-kind home furnishings.

But step into Tecumseh, and you’ll be hard pressed to find a shop that doesn’t impress even thea most discerning fash-ionista.

With this small town, there’s a vibrant collection of retailers that carry urban

brands and phenomenal products.

“There’s so much here that you prob-ably don’t need to go anywhere else to find whatever it is you’re looking for,” says Paula Rorai of the Tecumseh BIA.

Despite the wealth of shopping malls both on our side of the border and State-side, as well as online retailers, the town of Tecumseh satisfies consumers by way of extensive inventories of fabu-lous products, attentive salespeople and friendly surroundings.

In March, the town of Tecumseh re-vealed the name of its community

torchbearer for the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games Torch Relay.

On Tuesday, June 16, the torch relay will visit the town. Mark Renaud, for-mer team member of the Hartford Whalers and the Buffalo Sabres, will have the honour of carrying the torch for Tecumseh.

For 28 years, Mark and his wife Jane have been residents of Tecumseh, and are parents to Remy, Mickey and Penny. Mickey was captain of the Windsor Spitfires until his death in 2008; Mark is carrying the torch in his son’s memory.

Mayor of Tecumseh Gary McNamara said in a press release, “Mark Renaud

will proudly carry the Pan Am flame as Tecumseh’s community torchbearer. The Town of Tecumseh is excited to be a part of this historic journey and we look for-ward to showing our community to the world.”

The torch relay will take place over 41 days, and each of the 3,000 torch-bearers will complete a 200-meter relay segment. The torch will be carried by 60 modes of transpor-tation and exceed 5,000 kilometers on the ground,

15,000 kilometers by air. More than 130 communities will see the torch lit, which stands 65 centimeters high and weighs 1.2 kg. The torch can burn for 10 to 12 minutes at a time, withstanding winds of up to 70 kilometers per hour.

Pachi the Porcupine is the Toronto 2015 Pan Am Games mascot.
