A Singing Shabbaton: Jan. 23-25, 2020 Communal Song This is a special weekend of teaching, singing, performing and community building facilitated by our in-house musician Sarah Metzger with support from our musical lay leaders. Song lifts up our spirits to God. Song plays an essential role in our congregation’s life. There is nothing like singing together in a room full of people who are all singing. On this special Shabbat, we are going to take the weekend to explore the many dimensions of song in the spiritual life of our community. We will be experimenting with new songs and rhythms, different modalities of prayer and alternative prayer spaces, and learning about specific aspects of prayer. We believe that this Shabbaton can launch a renewed focus on how we sing together, taking us to the next level in terms of communal song.

A Shabbaton We want to gather together for an exciting in-house Shabbaton. A Shabbaton is a retreat, a departure from our regular routines and schedule, in order to create a special environment for reflection, enjoyment, new connections and learning. Because we are doing this Shabbaton right here in our very own building, everyone is invited, not just those who can travel or afford the hotel or camp experience. During this weekend, we want to stretch your imagination about what is possible for us to achieve musically as a community. Please plan to join us for all of the Shabbaton events, from Friday night wine and cheese until the party on Saturday night.

January Program Highlight:

Weekend Schedule 6:30 pm, Thursday, Jan. 23 A workshop will be held for lay leaders and the aspiring SHaTZ (Shaliach Tzibur - prayer leader) that will cover the following topics: • How to effectively lead prayer • How to create moments of meaning within a prayer space • Knowing when and how to add harmony (basic elements of music theory will be

introduced and practiced here) Friday, Jan. 24 5 pm - Wine and cheese pre-neg (aka pre-Oneg)

Small Fri Shabbat for young children (and their grown-ups) 5:45 pm - Kabbalat Shabbat in the round, followed by Oneg Saturday, Jan. 25 9:30 am - A musical shabbat morning service (with percussion!) Noon - Lunch Following lunch, various learning sessions will be offered, covering the following topics: kavanah; silence; nussach, newer-sach and old-sach; niggunim; creating “joyful noise” 4:30 pm - seudah shlishit (third meal) and shabbat shira - a joyful, free-flowing song session Mincha/ma’ariv 5:30 pm - Havdala 6 pm - Party Time! Dancing, singing, drinking, new Jewish music and food

Mental Health Awareness Shabbat, Jan. 31-Feb. 1 The weekend of Jan. 31-Feb. 1 is our first ever Mental Health Awareness Shabbat. We will be hearing from people we know and love about how mental health issues have affected their lives and their families’ lives. While I will unfortunately be away in Connecticut for the annual conference of our Yeshiva, Yeshivat Hadar, this topic is very important to me. Struggles with Mental Health have had their effects in my family. And I would dare to venture that it has taken a toll on most extended family networks. I am thankful to CJFS's leadership in this important area. I hope that as a result of the conversations that we start this weekend, we will be able to talk more freely about mental health and addiction issues in our community. I hope that we can lessen the stigma and provide better support to those families who suffer from such issues. —Rabbi Stephen

Repairing the World: Social Action Opportunities

WOMEN'S BUSINESS CLOTHING AND SHOES From Chanukah until Purim, the Social Action Committee is collecting new or gently used women's clothing and shoes suitable for business wear. The clothing will go to MY SISTER'S CLOSET, a low cost women's boutique that has everything that a woman might need but might not be able to afford. Most of the customers are referred by various agencies, and many are getting their lives back on track and entering the workforce or interviewing for a job. Search your closets and bring your donations to the Arlene and Marvin Shelsky and Family Collection Closet located in the Reading and Resource Room. They will be transferred to My Sister's Closet. For more information contact Judy Olitsky, [email protected].

Thank You! Thanks to all who participated in our Chanukah Blanket-Making event on Dec. 15! It was a huge success! Thanks also to those who donated toys, coats, blankets and more to help support our neighbors in need!

Reflections from TBE Board President Dan Weinrib

Last month, a number of us traveled up to Boston for the joint United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism/Rabbinical Assembly convention. Rabbi Slater, Adrienne & Julian Brook, Glynnis & Ronald Levitt, Joshua Richman, Naomi Ivker, Bob Greenberg and I participated in t'fillah, sang along with Jewish musicians,

as well as attended seminars and networking socials.

At some point every day, we would meet up, discuss briefly what we learned and confirm which activities each would attend next. I admittedly put myself through three long days at the USCJ, starting by 7 am and ending after midnight. As your Temple president, I felt that I owed it to you to learn as much as possible and meet our peers from around the country.

Here are my takeaways from that convention:

• While TBE has its shares of challenges, our shul remains strong in various core areas: a healthy spectrum of active members, reliable volunteer lay leaders, great office staff and professionals, and a nice endowment (aka TBE Foundation).

• Many Conservative shuls have had at least one negative experience (incompatible clergy, widespread dissatisfaction, shrinking membership, financial distress, etc.) at some point over the last decade.

• The biggest shuls -- those with at least 700 membership units – find that they must stay nimble. While they do operate with much bigger budgets than ours, they do not try to be all things to all people. Instead, they focus on their strengths and encourage their own members to explore new ways to promote their own brand of Judaism. They also partner up with and/or cross-promote with other Jewish agencies in their communities.

• USCJ strongly wants all their kehillahs to be entrepreneurial. Simply put, they want us to create new activities for our members, especially ones occurring away from our houses of worship. It actually reminded me of something I had advised Bethany & Rabbi (“Temple Beyond Walls” I called it) during his interview visit back in 2018. Some may be wildly successful; others won’t. Regardless, USCJ

wants us to share lessons learned from our successes and failures.

• The Conservative movement finally recognizes that the intermarriage phenomena is here to stay. During one seminar, a presenter made the case that when a shul like ours spurns a young interfaith couple, it will gradually lose three generations in subsequent years – the couple itself, then their children, followed by the Jewish grandparents – to a Reform temple, that is, IF they chose to remain Jewish. Near the end of the convention, we witnessed two rabbis disagree during a debate over the intermarriage topic. I watched the spectacle and found myself recalling all the non-Jewish spouses who have made differences in our lives back home. If Conservative Judaism wants to grow again across our country, we must open our own doors even more widely for the non-Jewish spouses/partners to participate and feel welcomed.

KIDZONE

In case you missed it, we dedicated the Halpern-Levitt KidZone & Family Center on Sunday, Dec. 15. For many of us parents, having an indoor playground is a game changer. Kids can play here, regardless of the season. On occasional demand, TBE can convert most of the play space into a special events room. While several people deserve kudos and compliments for their generous support, Maurine Halpern deserves our gratitude for all her hard work. Whenever you see her, thank her.

VOTE MERCAZ

The World Jewish Congress (WJC) is having elections. You can vote any time Jan. 21 through March 11. Our Conservative movement, Mercaz, needs us to turn out in droves in order to achieve equitable representation within the WJC. Five years ago, we let other Jewish movements claim bigger shares of the representation pie by remaining unaware of the voting deadline. To quote The Who, we won’t be fooled again!! So please vote. For more information, go to Mercaz2020.org or text “VOTE” at 917-336-1162.

PERSONNEL COMMITTEE

The Personnel Committee has already started its review work, resuming where it last left off this past spring. If you have anything you would like to share about your experiences with Temple Beth-El and/or Rabbi Stephen, email [email protected] by Jan. 20. As always, your feedback will remain confidential.

Foundation Spotlight: Anita and Julian Lichter Fund

By Joyce Shevin

I met the Lichter family way before I ever dreamed that one day Birmingham, Alabama would be my permanent home. Their daughter, Sheri Lichter Schwartz and I met at the University of Georgia where we became fast friends. During college, I spent several nights with Sheri in the Lichter home on Michael Lane, stopping over on our way to New Orleans to see Georgia play in the Sugar Bowl. Oh yes, back then you could not spell sugar without UGA!

“Aunt” Anita and “Uncle” Julian were always so warm and kind; they loved having young people in their home. Uncle Julian was engaging and funny, telling stories with a grin and a twinkle in his eye. Aunt Anita, always worried that we weren't eating enough, stuffed last minute homemade goodies into our arms for the trip. It was clear to me that theirs was a home filled with a great love for family and friends.

Fast forward a few years, and Sheri and I had literally switched places - she a newlywed living in Atlanta and me a newlywed living in Birmingham. The High Holidays at Temple Beth-El were always special as Sheri, her husband Mark and their daughters came home to Birmingham to visit. Our families would always cram ourselves into the same third row each year, Uncle Julian taking the lone chair on the end. I always looked forward to being together at our shared spiritual home.

The Lichter family’s roots to Temple Beth-El are deep, as Anita's maternal grandparents, Mollie and Isaac Gingold, were among the

founders of Temple Beth-El. Previously members of Knesseth Israel, Mollie and Isaac were part of the movement to establish a Conservative synagogue in Birmingham. Isaac also participated in the joint Knesseth Israel/Temple Beth-El Cemetery Association, founded in 1927 to promote joint use of the cemetery. Known as the “Old Cemetery,” it is located on Enon Ridge, a hillside community in North Birmingham. Interestingly, in talking to Sheri's brother, Murray Lichter, I found out why the Lichter family chose the third row of the synagogue to always sit in—it was the row closest to the stained glass window dedicated to Mollie & Isaac Gingold. I went to Temple to take a picture of the window but could not find it! It was then that I learned from our resident historian Julian Brook that several of the windows

were re-dedicated in the Temple renovation of 1972. The Gingold window was among them. A little sad, but a true nugget of Temple Beth-El history!

Julian Lichter celebrated his Bar Mitzvah as one of Rabbi Mesch’s first at TBE. Both Lichter sons, Steve and Murray, were also Bar Mitzvahed at Temple Beth-El. All five members of the family were confirmed at TBE and the three siblings used to delight in showing their children their parents’ and grandparents’ confirmation pictures all along “the wall.”

Sheri has fond memories of her mother always going to TBE during the week to bake with the Sisterhood for the weekly Oneg Shabbats. Sheri said her mother felt that TBE was where

her soul was—bound up in the life of the synagogue. By leaving a bequest to establish their fund, she and Uncle Julian will always be part of the fabric of Temple Beth-El.

As a new member of the Temple Beth-El Foundation Board, it has been so interesting to learn more about our members who have established their legacies by starting a named fund in our Foundation. It is their love for TBE, along with their generosity and vision, that will ensure those who come after them will experience the spirituality and education that they, their children and grandchildren have enjoyed. I remember so fondly those such as Anita and Julian Lichter who were so important to our synagogue’s past, and now, through the Anita and Julian Lichter Fund, are also providing for our future.

Julian and Anita Lichter are shown above. The Lichter family is show below.

Family Promise Rotation

Week begins Jan. 5, 2020, Temple Emanu-El Did you know that Temple Beth-El and Emanu-El have been hosting Family Promise families for over 20 years? Well, we have! If you have never partaken in this Tikkun Olam opportunity, let me encourage you to consider it. It’s a safe and meaningful way to really make a difference in the life of multiple families who are temporarily down on their luck. We are working together with volunteers from the entire Jewish community to help provide meals and a warm, safe place to stay each night during that week for temporarily homeless families. In addition, Temple Emanu-El has a clothes bank we open up one night for the families and members of our congregations to offer up gas cards to the families to help them get from work to school to Temple Emanu-El. During our last rotation, we had three families which included three single mothers and their nine children whose ages ranged from six to 16 years old. As an example as to how someone will end up in the Family Promise program: One family had a house fire and lost everything! Ways to help during our next rotation:

• Volunteer to help with set up or clean up on Jan. 5 or Jan. 12: 1 hour commitment • Our greatest need: Volunteer to spend one night at Temple Emanu-El as a chaperone on one of these dates:

Jan. 7-Jan. 11. Arrive by 6:45 pm and leave at 7 am the next morning (9 am on Saturday morning). Sleep in your own Temple classroom as your private bedroom with a cot which is provided.

• If your child needs volunteer hours, Family Promise is a simple and meaningful way to earn those hours! • All dinners are covered already! Thank you, Temple Beth-El family who already volunteered! Please contact Billie Marsala at [email protected] or (417) 861-1410 to ask any questions or to schedule your volunteer time. You can also sign up online by following this link: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0f4ba9a822abf94-family11

Little Scientists ’STEAM’ Series 10-11 am, Jan. 26, N.E. Miles Jewish Day School We’ll be focusing on our sense of touch as we conduct science experiments and become little engineers during this Little Scientist STEAM Series, "Sensory Silliness.”

Neighborhood Warming Station Volunteers Volunteers are needed for the emergency shelter/warming station at Grace Episcopal Church, Woodlawn. This interfaith ministry provides a warm place to sleep and a hot meal for our neighbors who are homeless or who have no heat, when the outside temperatures drop to below 32 degrees F. The warming station is housed in the Community Kitchens area of Grace Church and is open to both males and females. There are tasks for every level of ability and availability, including setup/breakdown, meal servers and overnight volunteers. Meals are delivered ready to be consumed. Please contact Anne Westbrooke if you are interested in volunteering at [email protected]. Also, all sizes of socks, gloves, hats and scarves are needed.
