TEMPLE EWELL C. E. PRIMARY SCHOOL

Dear Parents/Carers,

Term time holiday requests

Until September 2013 the regulations allowed Headteachers to ‘grant’ leave of absence for the purpose of a family holiday during term time in ‘special circum-stances’ of up to ten days leave per year. This has been changed with Headteachers no longer able to grant any leave of absence during school time unless there are ‘exceptional circumstances’.

Our school policy on granting such absences has now been updated to reflect this change.

Unfortunately exceptional circumstances do not include:

Availability of cheap holidays and cheap travel arrangements

Any future requests for any leave of absence will ONLY be granted in accordance with the amended legislation. Such requests will have to demonstrate why ‘exceptional circumstances’ apply and must be in writing and at least two weeks before anticipated start date.

My apologies for this change in policy, this is a national initiative not a school one. Our attendance levels at Temple Ewell have always been exceptionally high, with parents understanding the importance of regular attendance and its impact upon their child’s learning.

Some parents may have already requested holiday and these have been authorised and will therefore not be changed. However, any further requests for holiday, unless in exceptional circumstances, will not be authorised.

I appreciate that this is somewhat of a sudden change to the procedure but please be as-sured that this has been as a direct result of Government changes to the Regulations and, as I am sure you appreciate, the school is bound by the Law.

Yours sincerely

Jo Hygate

Our JRSO meeting

On the 10th October we went to Whitfield KCC Dover Council Chambers for a Junior road Safety Officer Conference. We saw presentations about the hazards of road safety such as wearing your seatbelt, stop, look and listen, and helmets. We also heard about be safe, be bright, be safe. We were there for the morning and had to choose three topics to talk about for the rest of the year.

Owen - Oaks

Kid In Space Show Last Friday, the whole school enjoyed watching The Kids in Space Show. We were all taken on a journey into space to learn about our Solar system. We travelled to each planet and even managed to manoeuvre our way through an asteroid belt! All the children thoroughly enjoyed the experience and learnt lots of new facts about space too!

Christmas Cards

We have Christmas cards for sale

in the office that Erin in Acorn’s

Grandfather has had produced for

the school. They were taken

during last year’s Carol Service

and would make a lovely

personalized greeting.

They are £1.50each and

available in the office.

Sports Round-up

Temple Ewell’s Basket

Ball Team had their

first tournament of

the season at Walmer

Science College in Deal.

We went to Walmer to play in a basket ball tournament. There were six

teams and we came third. The other teams were from Capel, Kingsdown x 2,

the Downs and White cliffs. We enjoyed it. Ewan scored the most followed

by Owen.

Class Topics

Acorns

This term our topic in Acorns is “Twinkle, Twinkle Lile Star”. We are learning about night

time, stars, and the earth in space. We are investigating forces and making rockets, moon

buggies and moving space toys.

We will be rehearsing, prop making and performing our

Christmas Play “Shine, Star, shine”.

We are currently being visited by lots of teachers from other schools who have heard how

clever we are!

We enjoy showing off our brilliant class!

Willows Around the world in 80 days with Philleas Fog

Join us on our adventures as we travel around the world in 80 days.

Through literacy by writing letters and postcards of our journey,

geography as we learn about different countries, art as we look at

the different types of art around the world including Rangoli

patterns and aboriginal art, music from around the world and history, at

the types of transport Philleas Fog would have used to travel around the world

during Victorian times and comparing this to the transport we would use to-

day.

As we travel around the world in 80 days we will be meeting Santa on his

journey and writing letters to him persuading him how good we’ve been and

informing him of what we would like for Christmas. We will be using maths

skills to measure distances as we travel and of course we would like lots of

different toys so we have a toy shop in class to practise our maths using

money.

Also this is the season of Our KS1 nativity play, as always a joyous occasion as

we learn the words and songs to re tell the story of the birth of Jesus. We

will also be finding out how Hindus celebrate this time of year through the

festival of Divali.

Elms

This term we are developing our mapping skills whilst learning about Tudor travel. We will be learning about

where we live as well as comparing and contrasting the UK with other countries.

We are continuing to develop our descriptive language through reading and writing stories set in the

Tudor period.

Within maths we are continuing to develop our understanding of multiplication and

division using real life situations to improve our skills.

SYCAMORES

This term the Sycamores are going to be looking at how the world began. Investigating how plants and animals, including dinosaurs, evolved since the world began. This will include going on a fossil hunt at the National History Museum.

Literacy this term we will be writing instructions, using imperative (bossy) verbs and time order connectives. Also, we will be reading the story of ‘Ironman’ by Ted Hughes. Finding out how the settings and characters are developed in the book.

In Numeracy we will learning the written method for multiplying and division. This will mean working hard to put all the skills of partitioning and addition in term one into practise.

The children will also learn about our Ecological Footprint,

with the learning intention of knowing how human actions impact on the Earth.

Exploring how waste disposal has changed through history and how different

materials can be recycled to reduce our ‘footprint’.

Chalk Slates & Chimney Sweeps

Beginning with the text “Street Child” by Berlie Doherty, we will unpick the life and times of an orphan in

Victorian London, based on the boy whose plight inspired Dr Barnardo to found his famous children’s homes.

During the literacy lessons, we will focus on Jim Jarvis being left all alone in London, what he did there, the

thoughts and feelings he experienced and how he is snatched away and made to work for the remorselessly

cruel Grimy Nick.

In mathematics, we will be learning more about angles, solving algebraic problems

and rotating and translating shapes.

There were many technological and social changes during the Victorian period,

we will be exploring in Design and Technology, the use of mechanisms in toys, the

development of transport and how that has impacted on Temple Ewell today in our

Geography lessons.

This is also a busy term for trips; with the Cathedral day, pantomime, Down House

and the Natural History Museum for Year 5 and 6 children!
