TEMPLE VS. TULANETemple holds a 3-1 lead in the all-time series with Tulane, including winning the earlier meeting thisseason. All four of their meetings have come in The American regular season.

LAST TIME THEY METLast time they met, the Owls jumped out to an 11-point lead and didn't look back, leading from buzzer tobuzzer in an 82-58 win at McGonigle Hall.

Temple used a 16-2 run late in the fourth quarter to knock off Tulane, 72-54 in New Orleans. Temple ledby 13 points after the first half, and then survived an 11-0 run from Tulane between the third and fourthquarters. Temple then used that one last surge to finish off the Green Wave on their home court.

Four Owls finished in double-figures in scoring, led by 22 from Alliya Butts. Tanaya Atkinson finishedwith 17 points and seven rebounds, while Feyonda Fitzgerald had 12 points and five boards. Erica Covilenotched her third double-double of the season, and 12th of her career with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Chinwe Duru led three Green Wave players in double figures, scoring 13 on the night, while Kolby Mor-gan and Meredith Schulte had 10 each.

NOTES FROM THE RECORD-SETTING HEARTBREAKER• Temple’s five overtime clash at Memphis on Thursday tied an NCAA record for the longest ever

women’s game. The affair tied Drexel and Northeastern's 2007 game in which the Dragons came out ontop, 98-90.• The game was the first overtime game of the season for Temple. The last ovetime game the Owls

played was in the semifinals of the 2015 WNIT, when Temple fell at West Virginia. • If the game went to a sixth overtime session, the Owls would have had just five eligible players, as

The last time that a Temple team was nationally ranked was the 2005-06 season when the Owlsclosed out the year ranked No. 19 (AP) and No. 23 (USA Today) in the final poll. Temple’s highest evernational ranking came during 2004-05 season when the Owls reached No. 15 on both polls.

RPI RISINGDespite a loss at Mephis, Temple’s RPI is now at 66, the third-highest of any team in the AmericanAthletic Conference. The Owls were ranked as low as 183 this season, but have skyrocketed withsome key victories in 2016. Temple sits behind UConn (2) and USF (42) in conference leaders in RPI.

STREAKING OWLSTemple’s six game winning streak that was snapped by UConn was the longest for the program sincethe 2011-12 season. That Temple team finished theregular season ranked first in the conference, but fell in the conference finals, 66-63 to Dayton.

TAKING CARE OF THE BALLWhen Temple topped Cincinnati on February 9, the Owls turned the ball over just four times in thegame, a season low. The Owls bestest their previous season-low of nine turnovers in a loss againstPenn.

The four turnovers marked the lowest for the program in 12 years. It was Temple’s cleanest gamesince turning the ball over only three times against Villanova on December 21, 2004, and was the firsttime that the team had recorded less than five turnovers since that game.

SHORTAGE OF THREESTemple hit a season-low two three pointers in their latest match-up against SMU, going 2-for-16 fromlong-range. That tied Temple’s two threes made (2-for-10) against Villanova on December 2, as thelowest total from beyond-the arc. However, in both games where Temple only collected two from be-yond-the-arc, the Owls grabbed wins. Temple beat Villanova, 61-55, and topped SMU, 55-35.

SUNDAY STRUGGLESTemple grabbed its first Sunday win of the season in four games when the Owls toppedCincinnati on Sunday, January 10. Prior to that win, Temple had played three Sunday gamesgoing 0-3, with losses to Rutgers, Saint Joseph’s, and Florida State.

SPREADING THE LOVEIn Temple’s 66-46 win over Tulsa on January 8, 10 different Owls broke into the scoring col-umn. Nine players had scored in previous games against Quinnipiac (L, 58-56), Sacred Heart(W, 92-62), and Delaware State (W, 100-59), but this was the first time in the 2015-16 seasonthat 10 players scored. The lowest number of scorers Temple has had in a game this seasonwas four in a 61-51 loss at Rutgers.

Last season, Temple only carried nine players on its roster, so the last time a cherry and whitebox score had 10 players score points was January 9, 2014 in a 64-51 win over Memphis.

TEMPLE IN THE AMERICANTemple embarks on its third season of American Athletic Conference play, a year after going12-6 against league opponents. The Owls finished fourth in The American in 2014-15, and fellto #5 ECU (77-71) in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament.

2015-16 was the third-straight year that Temple opened conference play against Memphis. Inboth 2013-14 and 2014-15, the Owls played the Tigers on the road to open The American sea-son, but played Memphis at home this year.

CANADA TRANSFERSTemple freshman Chyanna Canada has transferred out of the Owls’ program. The 6-2 forwardleft Temple following the completion of the fall semester. Canada had seen limited action forthe Owls, playing in three total games, scoring two points.

KEEPING IT OUTSIDEBefore getting to the line for 24 attempts against Delaware State, Temple had attempted lessthan 12 free throws for three-straight contests. In a loss to Florida State, the Owls attemptedjust three (making two), in a 75-47 loss. Against Sacred Heart, the Owls went 4-for-9 from theline, but were hot from three, contributing to the 92-62 win. Temple got to the line only 11times against Fordham, making seven of their attempts. For the season, the Owls are ninth inthe conference (out of 11 teams) in free throws attempted.

LEADING THE STAT LINEWith her stat line against Rutgers (27 points, nine rebounds, three assist), Feyonda Fitzgeraldbecame the first Temple player since 2011 to lead the team in points, rebounds, and assists. The last player to accomplish that feat for the Owls was Shey Peddy, who totaled 26 points, 9rebounds, and four assists in a 61-52 win at Duquesne on February 5, 2011.

The Owls also shot 50% from three (12-24) for first time since Valentine’s Day last sea-son when Temple went 7-for-12 (58.3%) from long range against Houston.

The Temple shooting numbers benefitted from a season-best 28 assists against Sacred Heart. The Owls also had 15 steals for the first time this season.DOMINATING DELAWARE STATETemple’s 100-59 victory over Delaware State hit a number of milestones for the Owls. For the season, the Owls have a rebounding margin of +3.0, thanks in large part to out-rebound-ing Sacred Heart, 47-21. The +26 rebounding margin in that game was the highest all season, andit marked the first time that Temple had a 20 or more rebound advantage in a game since out-re-bounding Duquesne by 25 on February 17, 2010.

WORK HORSESJunior Feyonda Fitzgerald and sophomore Alliya Butts combined for 45 of the team’s 51 againstRutgers, but both also played nearly the whole game. The last time that the Owls accomplished that feat waswhen the team netted 52 against George Washington on February 16, 2011. Tonya Cardoza is in her eighth season on North BroadStreet, continuing and building upon the success of Templewomen’s basketball.

The 2014-15 Owls showed that they are ready to makea return to the national stage. Cardoza's squad made thefirst post-season final four in program history, advancingto the WNIT semifinals before falling in overtime at WestVirginia. The Owls finished with a 20-win season, going 20-17 overall, including a 12-6 mark in the tough American Ath-letic Conference. The 2014-15 season saw the breakout offreshman Alliya Butts, who was named Big 5 Freshman ofthe Year, while also earning spots on the American All-Con-ference team, the American All-Rookie team, and the All-Big 5 team. Junior combo guard Erica Covile also receivedAll-Big 5 and All-American Athletic Conference honors, while senior Tyonna Williams earned the American Sports-manship Award, as well as one of six spots on the All-WNITteam.

2013-14 marked a new era of women’s basketball atTemple for Cardoza— competing in the inaugural season ofthe American Athletic Conference. Guided by true freshmanpoint guard Feyonda Fitzgerald, the Owls faced seven na-tionally ranked opponents— tying the school record for themost in season— including two games against defendingnational champion and No. 1 Connecticut and Final Fourparticipant Louisville. The young Owls finished fifth inAmerican play after predicted to finish ninth, showing theleague and the nation that they had fight.

Fitzgerald was a unanimous All-Freshman Team hon-oree from the conference as well as a second-team All-Con-ference selection. Junior Rateska Brown earned theAmerican’s inaugural Sixth Player of the Year Award. SeniorNatasha Thames was a second-team All-Conference hon-oree, and freshman Taylor Robinson was named to the All-Freshman team.

The 2010-11 Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year, Cardoza ledthe Owls to three consecutive NCAA Tournament appear-ances, advancing to the Second Round in both 2010 and2011. The Owls narrowly missed earning a berth in theNCAA Tournament in 2011-12, but took a top spot in theWomen’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) and ad-vanced to the third round.

Along with earning Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year hon-ors for the Owls' performance in 2010-11, Cardoza was hon-ored as the Big 5 Coach of the Year for a third time. Sheearned that honor in each of her first three seasons at Tem-ple, and the Owls earned their sixth straight Big 5 title inher first year with the program. Temple won the Big 5 againin 2011, and finished as runner-up in both 2010 and 2012.

Already 107-57 all-time in her head coaching career,Cardoza led Temple to at least 20 wins in her first four yearsat the helm. During her inaugural season in 2008-09, Car-doza guided TU to a 21-10 mark and an NCAA?Tournamentappearance. She was a finalist for the National RookieCoach of the Year award. 14 in a row, once again with a 13-1 mark in the conference.During their final year of Atlantic 10 Conference play in2012-13, Cardoza guided the nation’s second-youngestteam (six freshmen).

After spending 14 years as assistant coach at the Uni-versity of Connecticut under Hall of Fame coach Geno Au-riemma, a tenure in which she helped the Huskies to fiveNational Championships, few doubted that Cardoza hadwhat it takes to build a successful program.

The Owls finished in the Top 3 in the Atlantic 10 forthree consecutive seasons. In Cardoza’s first season shecoached the squad to an upset over No. 13 Xavier, makingher the first coach in TU women’s basketball history toupset a ranked team during her rookie season.

Cardoza was instrumental in All-Conference selectionLaKeisha Eaddy’s transition to point guard in 2008-09,nearly helping the upperclassman set a new single seasonrecord for assists. Cardoza also retained then-freshman re-cruit Kristen McCarthy, who was named to the A-10 FirstTeam in 2010, as well as taking home the title of Big 5Player of the Year.

Cardoza's best recruit had to sit out a year after trans-ferring from Division I Wright State in 2009, but Shey Peddythen became one of the top players in the history of theprogram. Peddy took home both the Atlantic 10 Player ofthe Year and Defensive Player of the Year awards in 2012,and was named the Big 5 Player of the Year for a secondstraight time. Peddy was a two-time Atlantic 10 First Teamselection and made her mark on the all-time career recordlists despite playing only two years with the Owls. Peddybecame Cardoza’s first WNBA draft pick (as a head coach)when she was taken 23rd overall in the 2012 WNBA Draftby the Chicago Sky.

Arriving at Connecticut at the start of the 1994-95season, Cardoza helped guide the Huskies to an unprece-dented 465-41 record, seven Final Four appearances andsix No. 1 National Rankings in the final Associated Presspoll. Cardoza was a part of four undefeated regular sea-sons, including two unbeaten national championshipteams in 1994-95 and 2001-02. The Huskies also won aNCAA record 70 consecutive games from 2001 to 2003. InBig East play, the team won 12 regular-season titles and 12conference tournament championships.

Cardoza worked primarily with the guards at UConn, producing numerous All-America and All-BIG EAST perform-ers, including WNBA stars Sue Bird, Renee Montgomery, and Diana Taurasi.

A 1991 University of Virginia graduate with a degreein anthropology, Cardoza starred for the Cavaliers, leadingthe team to four consecutive NCAA National Tournamentappearances. As a senior, she led Virginia in scoring (15.5ppg), and tied Dawn Staley for the rebounding lead (6.1rpg) while earning the following honors: Kodak HonorableMention All-America; Kodak First Team All-District III; FirstTeam All-Atlantic Coast Conference; NCAA Final Four All-Tournament Team, and NCAA Regional All-TournamentTeam.
