Businessman Frank M. Chillura was elected mayor of Temple Terrace in the 2012 General Election. Unofficial voting results on Wednesday showed Chillura with 5,783 votes (54 percent), defeating political newcomer Cheri Donohue with 4,988 votes (46 percent). Chillura is a longtime real estate and business owner. He served on the Temple Terrace City Council from 2000-2008 and currently is chairman of the Hillsborough County City-County Planning Commission. Donohue is a longtime civic volunteer and former executive director of the Greater Temple Terrace Chamber of Commerce. Also elected Tuesday were two new Temple Terrace City Council members: Grant Rimbey and Eddie Vance. Incumbent Mary Jane Neale lost her bid for re-election after serving one term. Unofficial voting results Wednesday showed the following totals: Grant Rimbey – 5,349 votes (36 percent) Eddie Vance – 4,901 votes (33 percent) Mary Jane Neale – 4,545 (31 percent). The mayor and council members are

elected at large and serve four-year terms. The election is nonpartisan. Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi conducted the swearing-in ceremony of Temple Terrace's newly elected mayor and new City Council members, Grant Rimbey and Eddie Vance at the November 20th City Council meeting at Temple Terrace City Hall. Attorney General Pam Bondi grew up in Temple Terrace and continues to have a stong connection the community. Her father, Joseph Bondi, once served on the Temple Terrace City Council and was mayor of Temple Terrace from 1974-1978. Mr. Bondi still has a residence in the city. Pam Bondi, a former Hillsborough County assistant state attorney, was elected Attorney General of Florida in 2010. In August, she was featured guest speaker at the Republican National Convention in Tampa. v

With two new exhibits opening in December, a newly renovated inventors’ studio and the recent addition of our Sky Trail® Zip Line, MOSI’s face is really changing. On Dec. 2nd, MOSI will reveal its newest exhibit, Slippery Science, a PNC Passport to Science – Grow Up Great Initiative. Experiment

with friction, collision physics or just ride the Zamboni! The exhibition will be located in Kids In Charge!, MOSI’s children’s science center, and will contain

11 new exhibits. Incorporating elements of the Tampa Bay Times Forum and Tampa Bay Lightning hockey team as a backdrop, Slippery Science will include a series of interactive exhibits that teach friction, physics and more! MOSI has also teamed up with NASA to create its new permanent exhibit Mission: Moonbase. MOSI’s guests will travel to the moon on a space transport to help operate a lunar colony. They will become a part of a team, living and working on the moon in the year 2070, achieving what once seemed impossible – a home away from Earth. Mission: Moonbase is set to open at MOSI on Dec. 15th. As if that wasn’t enough, MOSI is also gearing up for the holidays with everybody’s favorite jolly guy. Santa Claus is coming to… MOSI! Ho! Ho! Hold on tight because Santa is going to be hanging out on

MOSI’s Sky Trail® Ropes Course on Saturday, Dec. 8th, and he wants you to join him. Photos are free with paid Ropes Course admission. If you’d rather keep two feet on the ground, head to MOSI for a special all-you-can-eat breakfast with Santa on Saturday, Dec. 15th. The event will feature special holiday activities, music and photo ops (so bring your camera). And don’t forget, when School’s

Out, MOSI’s In! There is no better place to spend Thanksgiving and Winter Break than MOSI camp. Campers can whip up batches of oozes and goos or build robots and rockets at MOSI once school lets out. Once the holidays are over, MOSI will keep the post-holiday blues away with two comforting events: Festival of Chocolate, Florida’s largest all-chocolate themed event, on Jan. 19th – 21st, 2013 and Einstein on Food and Wine, MOSI’s annual fundraiser that features a dash of science, a pinch of atmosphere and a heaping helping of food and wine on Saturday, Feb. 2nd, 2013. Don’t miss out on these delicious events! For more information on any of MOSI’s upcoming events and openings, visit MOSI.org or call 813-987-6000. v

I am the father of Sloan Hastings here in Temple Terrace and love your Temple Terrace News! We always fight over who gets to read it first! I am writing to introduce you to my son Sloan, who is a Sophomore in the IB program at King High School. He just completed his eagle Board of Review and is officially an Eagle Scout. He is a member of Troop 142. Sloan wanted to do something for his Eagle Service Project that would benefit his home town of Temple Terrace so he approached James Chambers who heads up the Parks and Recreation Department to inquire if they had a need. Mr. Chambers asked Sloan to consider several projects but wanted

him to build a monument in Woodmont Park. And to place on that monument a plaque that had been in storage for a few years. The plaque originally sat on a monument outside the Beacon Newspaper office. The Beacon was the local newspaper here for many years. The plaque commemorates the war correspondents who have lost their lives reporting the war news back to the States. The plaque was in pretty bad shape, so with the help of Crown Trophy, Sloan found a foundry in Indiana to refurbish the plaque. Mr. John Greaves, a local contractor who is a huge supporter of Scouting agreed to mentor Sloan with his Eagle Service Project. Sloan had to raise over $1,000.00

to complete his project. Ms. Lynn Walker, the Manager of New Tampa Lowes Store was extremely generous in helping Sloan complete his project. In order to raise the money for his Eagle Service Project, Sloan decided to approach local businesses here in Temple Terrace for donations. His thinking behind this was he is a little shy about such things but knew that this would force him to grow in that area of his life. Many great lessons were learned during the course of his project and we saw Sloan really mature along the way. We also got to see firsthand how generous our hometown people are with their time and their money.Sloan led a team of scouts and adults through this adventure and we are very

proud of him! We wanted to shed a wonderful light on Scouting in hopes that some young boy or parent would read this article and consider joining a great organization. v

For Richard Crouse and his fellow Rotaract Club members, words like “complacent” or “uninvolved” don’t apply. These young citizens are part of a growing phenomenon with more than 8,400 clubs in about 170 countries worldwide. Rotaract is a Rotary-sponsored service club for young men and women ages 18 to 30. Rotaract clubs are either community or university based, and they are sponsored by a local Rotary club. This makes them true "partners in service" and key members of the family of Rotary. The local chapter has members from St. Petersburg to North Tampa composed of university students and working professionals. These

young people are interested in bettering their community, developing leadership and networking skills and making lasting friendships. “We are involved in all types of projects, both local and international,” says club President Richard Crouse. “To date, we have planted vegetables at Sweetwater Organic Farms, collaborated with groups at USF to organize a ‘Dine in the Dark’ fundraiser raising over $3000 for Southeastern Guide Dogs. We carved pumpkins with the children at the Joshua House, cleaned up Clam Bayou with Tampa Bay Watch and volunteered at the Lowry Park Zoo's Zoofari event.” The club is currently partnering with other Rotaract clubs in a project called

“Culture Connect” to enlighten elementary and middle school students about what daily life and school life is like for students in other parts of the world. The club meets the first and third Wednesday at 7:30 pm in both south Tampa and at a location near USF to reach

members across the Tampa Bay area. Their schedule will be adjusted due to holidays. For more information visit their facebook page www.facebook.com/TampaRotaractClub or email [email protected]. The club is always open to new members. v

PHONE FRIEND Walking into an empty home after school can be a lonely experience, especially when you’re a child. Each year, an estimated 10 million youth nationally are left home alone. Since 1984, Northside Mental Health Center’s PhoneFriend program offers latchkey kids reassurance, encouragement and homework assistance. This free after school phone service, available to more than 84,000 Hillsborough County elementary

school children, positively influences families because of generous contributions and support from the community. PhoneFriend is an on-going effort of Northside Mental Health Center and does not receive state or federal funding and is entirely dependent upon community support. The proceeds from Puttin’ on the Glitz are graciously donated by the Auxiliary of Northside and will assist in support of the program.

VOLUNTEER RECOGNITION

Laura Onac and Anny Arias shared their experience of serving as volunteers on the PhoneFriend call line. Both young ladies spoke of the positive relationship established between the volunteer and caller. They shared stories of situations that validate the mission of PhoneFriend. Laura

Invitations come in a variety of ways. Some are formal while others are less so – “You are cordially invited” versus “Hey, stop by if you can”. For some all it takes is a story about a neighbor in need, for others it’s all about the camaraderie – but whatever it takes, the members of the Temple Terrace Rotary want you to know that you are welcome and encouraged to attend an Open House and Member Social scheduled for Thursday November 29th from 5:30 – 7:30 at the TT Golf and Country Club. Wine and Cheese are not the only items on the menu.

Members will be on hand to share the many reasons why they joined and answer any questions about what it takes to be a Rotarian. The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and to encourage and foster:• The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;• High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society;• The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business and

community life and. • The advantage of international understanding, goodwill and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.Today, Rotary clubs carry on the tradition of service by meeting the needs of their members and community and by staying relevant, flexible and innovative for their members and community – each club in its own way. Service projects such as the Neighbor-to-neighbor Clean-up days (putting the Broken Window theory into practice by cleaning up

abandoned yards) ; the adoption of MOSI Partnership School and King HS Interact Club as well as offering assistance to other local clubs and organizations keeps us involved in Temple Terrace. International projects keep us connected to the worldwide organization of Rotary International. If perhaps you are reading this article after the evening of November 29th and are interested in visiting us – just drop in! No RSVP is required. We meet weekly, on Tuesday morning at 7:15am, at the IHOP Restaurant at Morris Bridge & Fowler. We promise to have you on your way promptly at 8:30am. Your first breakfast is on us so if wine and cheese aren’t enough to entice you to visit, perhaps pancakes are! v

Do you or someone you know have a child who loves to sing? I am a 12 year old and

I am in 7th grade. My name is Cazlin and I have a younger sister who is 10 and in 5th grade named Zanti. My sister and I have wanted to be in a chorus or get singing lessons since we were really young. We found there was a choir

right down the road, so Zanti and I decided to try out. We practiced for the audition for a long time before we tried out, and we both got into the Concert choir. Recently, a lady from the St. Petersburg Young Voices choir said that they were touring in Quebec, Canada this summer and that they were going to invite us along. I really want to go on the tour. It sounds like so much fun! There are 75 singers in the choir including the new group they just started in St. Petersburg and they are looking for more singers. I strongly recommend this choir because I really enjoy it. My voice is a

lot better now than when I started! We recently discovered a gem of a program in Temple Terrace. The Tampa Bay Children's Chorus attracts singers from outlying areas to Temple Terrace, some driving an hour or more, to learn and practice music in a dynamic and supportive environment. Oddly enough, very few Temple Terrace families are aware of TBCC and only a handful of the 75 participants (grades 2-12) are from Temple Terrace. Our children have grown up here, yet we didn’t discover this program until the oldest was in 7th grade. Over the years, we have occasionally enrolled them in music lessons, but find they lose interest in individual instruction. In contrast, since joining TBCC Sept 2012, our daughters have developed new skills while forming friendships during an annual retreat, weekly practices, and monthly performances. They have benefitted enormously from their short time at TBCC, learning music from highly trained directors and meeting kids who share their love of singing in a program that expects children to remain focused, work hard, and perform their best. My “homebody daughter” has surprised us by announcing she would like to tour with TBCC in Quebec this summer and promptly coming up with ideas to earn money to pursue her plan. She keeps the tour announcement prominently displayed in her room. On top of it all, their singing voices have noticeably improved, and

listening to them sing in the car is now enjoyable! Although we only learned recently of the program, TBCC was founded in 1989. The director, Averill Summer, is Professor Emeritus of Piano at USF and has led the chorus in performances with the Florida Orchestra and Master Chorale of Tampa Bay, the Imperial Symphony, and the Manhattan Philharmonic. TBCC tours annually and has made several concert tours to European and North American cities, including Paris, Vienna, London, New York, New Orleans, and Washington, D.C., and have sung in such venues as the Washington National Cathedral, Coventry Cathedral, and Carnegie Hall. They have many local performances as well and the performance schedule may be found at www.tbcchorus.org. They have two free Holiday performances scheduled in December: 12/ 8, at 7:30 pm at First Presbyterian Church, 701 Beach Drive NE, St. Petersburg and 12/9, at 4 pm at Hyde Park United Methodist Church, 500 W. Platt St., Tampa. New singers are welcome to join the group (www.tbcchorus.org or call 813-977-5558). v

As the growing season continues, the Temple Terrace Community Garden finds itself also growing beyond its original boundaries. The group has already established plots at Riverhills Elementary and in Riverhills Park. Collaborations between members of the community garden and students at Greco Middle School have already begun in

preparation for a third plot that will be available there. From its humble origins in the beginning of 2012, the Temple Terrace Community Garden group could not be happier to see its presence expanding in the community! Right now fruits, vegetables, and herbs are growing at a quick pace as the weather becomes milder. The winter

season is traditionally the busiest for gardeners in Florida and as more plots are made available, a wider selection of crops will be available. The site at Riverhills Elementary remains a communal one; those in Riverhills Park are suitable for individuals and a wide variety of crops can be grown there. All of the sites that

are part of the Temple Terrace Community Garden use organic practices. Information about how to maintain an organic garden, as well as tips for current members, are available from

experienced gardeners in the group. If you are interested in learning more about the garden, there are a number of resources available online, including the group’s website at www.templeterracegarden and an active Facebook group. Prospective members are also welcome to

stop by on a Wednesday evening or a Saturday morning to the Riverhills Elementary site during a workday to learn more about the group. We look forward to seeing you in the garden! v

“Dinner at 8, Dead by 9” Murder Mystery Dinner

Theater @ TCMS On October 20th, there was only one question on the minds of TCMS students…which of

their teachers was the killer? The Terrace Community Middle School teachers and staff presented “Dinner at Eight, Dead by Nine,” a murder mystery dinner theater by Michael Druce. The story was centered around a dinner theater party honoring Eleanor VanHeusen (played by Judith Turner), but when the lights in the theater go down so too did Mrs. VanHeusen (face first into a plate of spaghetti). It was up to the other members of the dinner party and Detective Bungler (played by Marco Salazar) to figure out “whodunit.” Other staff participating in the show were Austin Simpson, Shannon Waggoner, Traci

hundred dollar cash prize but only one school took the title. Winning 1st place was Brooks DeBartolo’s group of science club members called the

J-team (Joshua Gatlin, Jaalin Harvey, Justin Mitchell, and Julia Delgado). This team excelled in all categories recognized by the judges such as design, drainage power, water capacity in the tank, and overall theme. Their model tower was formed as a tree and emphasized the severity of conservation using all recycled materials and no artificial adhesives like tape. Even the insulation of the drain at the bottom of the tank was clogged using the red wax left over by cream cheese packets. Overall the J-team gave an impressive presentation of their water tower and their skills.

Ben was selected out of thousands of applicants to be one of ten finalists for the award. Qualifying applicants must excel in athletics, academics, and community service. Ben is the captain of his Power Wheelchair Soccer team, having participated in the sport for ten years. He is a member of the International Baccalaureate program. The Temple Terrace

Friendship Club will

meet on December 11th

at 11 am at the Temple Terrace Golf and Country Club. We will begin with hospitality, a short business meeting lead by our President Maryrose Owens, followed by a festive buffet for the Christmas holiday.

Dress for the day will be Christmas finery. Our theme will be Happy Holidays.

The St. Vincent de Paul Society in Temple Terrace is in need of toys for 200 local needy children. We ask that our women bring any little gift to help them out. It will be so appreciated.

I came across a little article and in the Christmas spirit thought I would pass some of it on. We all want ideas on staying young. This article suggested keeping only cheerful friends and to keep learning. Learn about computers, crafts, gardening, whatever. Never let your brain be idle. Laugh often, long and loud. The tears happen. Endure, grieve, and move on. Surround yourself with what you love; family, pets, music, plants and hobbies. But most of all, tell the people you love that you love them at every opportunity you get!

A Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy New year to each and every one of you!

All women are welcome but reservations are necessary. Please call Janet Pangborn at 985-0360.

Temple Terrace Garden club

Happy Hoofers

The Temple Terrace Garden Club has been selling Poinsettia and Christmas Cactus plants for 40 years. We thought it might be a good idea to share some tips on how to keep your cactus healthy so that it will bloom for you again. Soil: Does well in almost any good garden

soil. Needs no feeding except when buds begin to set. Water: Avoid overwatering. It needs to be gently pushed into dormancy at the beginning of November to ensure holiday blooms, allow the plant to dry out between light waterings during this time. Keep soil

lightly moist during blooming. Pests: Almost immune. Yellow leaves and flower buds dropping off may be caused by too much water.Heat: Moderate to cool. Keep away from heat sources when trying to trigger its dormant period. Light: In the Fall encourage bud development by placing it in a room where it will be in complete darkness at least 12 hours a night (up to 14 hours). When buds show, place in a location where it gets sun part of the day. Propagation: Take cuttings in Spring, at place where aerial roots have come out. Let cuttings lie for a few days to callous over, then pot in ordinary soil. Notes: Set pot outdoors in summer and forget about it. Bring it in before frost, withhold water for about six

weeks, and then begin to water about time to produce buds for holiday bloom. If you purchased one from us in the past, please send us a photo and let us know how you did it – we are always on the lookout for fellow gardeners and their gardening tips. Or better yet – why not join us! We meet the 2nd Wednesday of the month at Woodmont Clubhouse. If daytime meetings are not for you, we also meet occasionally in the evenings to learn more about gardening in Temple Terrace. Mark your calendar for January 22nd at 6:30pm at the Woodmont Clubhouse, 415 Woodmont Ave. Temple Terrace, when we will host a “Plant Exchange” – whether you buy it or grow it – bring it to share with a fellow gardener. The somber ceremony was attended by family members, friends and guests and was followed by a catered luncheon at Tampa Palms Golf & Country Club. In 1919, the UDC began bestowing Military Service Awards upon the descendants

of Confederate Veterans for their service in the U.S. Armed Forces, and this tradition continues today. The UDC currently bestows awards for service from WWII through the Global War on Terror. The UDC Military Service Awards are the outgrowth of the “Southern Cross of Honour” a decoration which was conceived and bestowed by the UDC and which recognized the valor of the Confederate soldier and sailor and represented the thanks of a grateful nation that fate denied. Unique in military lore, they were conceived, produced, and awarded by that nation’s Daughters in the absence of its fallen government The United Daughters of the Confederacy is the Nation’s Oldest Patriotic Organization, dating to 1896, whose original

purpose of the care of the aging Confederate Veterans after the War Between the States. Today, the Organization's objectives are patriotic, historical, educational, memorial and benevolent. The Augusta Jane Evans Wilson Chapter 2640 was chartered in April 2004 in

Temple Terrace. Interested Veterans may contact Recorder of Crosses, Mrs. Ron Queen (Sandra) 813-267-2119 or visit the Chapter’s Web site at www.AugustaJanesUDC.org. Prospective members are welcome to inquire at [email protected]. v

Have you ever gone to a restaurant, pediatrician's waiting room, park or play group and been amazed to see a 3-4 year old reading, writing, or counting by 10's? More than likely you have encountered one of our Montessori children. Montessori education is fast becoming the premier educational program not only for toddler and preschool aged children, but also for kindergarten and elementary levels as well. Our Montessori students are bright, socially adjusted, confident students who face challenges with optimism and who have developed a love for learning that lasts a lifetime. How is this possible? The Montessori Preparatory School and Montessori Academy of Temple Terrace have programs that are based on

self-directed, non-competitive and cooperative activities that help a child develop a strong self-image and high levels of academic competence. Children

are encouraged to make decisions at an early age, make appropriate choices, manage their time, and

work well with others. Our Montessori students are problem-solvers who have built positive communication skills as they discuss ideas and work with others freely on a daily basis. It is not unusual to see one

of our Montessori kindergarten students working on complex mathematics or a second grader working on geometric or algebraic equations.

If you visit a classroom at the Montessori Preparatory School or the Montessori

Academy of Temple Terrace, you will see children delightedly absorbed in their work. Each

classroom is specifically designed to entice the child with hundreds of materials and exercises in all academic areas. Children are free to move from various learning centers and progress at their own pace using a wealth of materials ranging from the simple to the complex. Our students are never bored and always challenged. The results speak for themselves - research shows that Montessori children not only score above average on standardized testing but are also so much better prepared for later life academically, socially, emotionally, and psychologically. Want to find out more about the Montessori Method, philosophy, curriculum, tuition and more? Call our schools at the numbers listed and we will be happy to answer your questions or schedule a tour. Your child could not be better prepared for the future! (813) 899-2345 v

As the holiday season fast approaches, cookie recipes become a hot commodity. Cookies are the perfect homemade gift for friends, family -- even the mailman. There are dozens of cookie cookbooks at the library, but here are four highly recommended books and the cookies that came out of them. The first is “Cookies at Home,” published by the Culinary Institute of America. The book begins with several chapters on materials, decorations and techniques, showing you the right consistency for batter and icing, and the proper methods of piping. The recipes cover a lot of the standards, including brownies, bars and meringues. Fewer than half of them have photos, but everyone knows what an oatmeal cookie looks like. I chose to make butterscotch cookies, which turned out very flavorful, with ground butterscotch

candies and butterscotch extract. “Very Merry Cookies” by Better Homes and Gardens is great for creative and festive cookie ideas. Each recipe has a photo, prep and bake time, and sometimes special tips. The recipes are arranged by ingredient. There are peppermint cookies, caramel creations, and even a chapter on coffee-flavored treats. I picked out the macadamia bars with eggnog drizzle, and the end product looked just as good as the picture. The bars were soft, with a mild, eggnog/nutmeg spiciness. “101 Gourmet Cookies for Everyone” by Wendy Paul plays to the whole crowd with “Forget the Calories” and “Watch the Waistline” recipes. There are even chapters for special diets, like vegan and gluten-free. I picked out the low-fat, low-sugar butternut squash pecan cookies. They were moist

and cake-like, much like pumpkin bread. The texture was a nice change of pace. The last pick, “One Sweet Cookie,” was a collection of

recipes from celebrated chefs. Many of these chefs specialize in international cuisine. There are Australian lamington bars, which are almost like little cakes. There is a chocolate-chip cookie recipe from Jacques Torres, a famed

chocolatier. I decided to try the flourless chocolate cookies. These cookiesresemble classic chocolate crackle cookies and have no butter or oil. They were sweet and rich all the same, and the chopped walnuts gave them a pleasant texture. There are cookies for every diet,

every budget and every skill level out there. Find the right book, and don't forget to read the entire recipe before starting. All the books mentioned above can be found at the Temple Terrace Public Library or can be placed on hold at www.HCPLC.org. v

JuniorettesNovember was a busy month for the Juniorettes, as they helped children make crafts and get their faces painted at the Arts Festival. The Juniorettes assisted at the library's Princess Party, where little girls were encouraged to dress up as princesses and make tiaras, play games, and listen to stories about empowered princesses. A special treat for the Juniorettes was a visit by Leslie Jones from

the Woman's Club, who spoke with the Juniorettes about skin care and makeup tips, and the girls were able to practice these at the meeting. Future projects include working at the Trot Thru the Terrace and Sincerely Santa. The GFWC Temple Terrace Juniorettes is a service club for teenaged girls and meets the first Monday of every month during the school year from 7:00 - 8:30 pm at Woodmont Clubhouse. For more information, please contact their advisor, Joyce Johnston, at 985-3533. v

1 3-4 pound pork tenderloin (non-marinated) The filling: 2 cloves garlic 10 oz. spinach 4. oz sun-dried tomatoes Saute garlic and chopped spinach in olive oil until nearly cooked through. Add sun-dried tomatoes. Remove from stove when the spinach is cooked to your liking. In a separate bowl, mix goat cheese, cream cheese, and sour cream together until smooth. Add the spinach + sun-dried tomatoes to your creamy mixture. Lay loin fat side down. Make a cut lengthwise down the center of the meat and about 2/3 of the way through it. Push meat flat and, starting from the deepest part of the center cut, make a 1-inch horizontal cuts toward each side running the length of the meat. Push meat flat again. Pat the pork dry with a paper towel, then place on a baking sheet. Spread the filling across the pork, then roll the tenderloin up like a jelly roll, keeping the mixture enclosed. Tie the pork with cotton strings to secure it. Brush the top of the pork with olive oil, and season with salt and

pepper. Bake at 400 degrees, for about an hour, until the internal temperature of the pork is 155 degrees (you will need a meat thermometer). To avoid overcooking the pork, check the meat with the thermometer after 40 minutes of cooking. Cooking times will vary based on the weight of the tenderloin.
