F r o m t h e R a b b i ’ s D e s k~Re-Dedication at Chanukah~

December brings with it long nights and dark days. We greet the

solstice, the “shortest day” of the year and we banish the darkness on the 25th of Kislev with the lights of our menorahs. December also brings with it change. The solstice also marks the time when daylight hours will begin to increase. The changes of the seasons, the tilt of the earth are constants each year. The one thing we can always count on being the same is that there will always be change!

As we move into December, our congregation will experience some changes as well. Our Educator/Administrator, Margaret Friedman-Vaughan, will continue in a leadership role at Rockdale Temple as our Administrator. From January to May, our Religious School will be ably led by Alexia Kadish, a talented educator and committed and compassionate woman (see her article in this bulletin as well as Margaret’s). Beginning July 1, Meredith Kahan will direct Kehal Kodesh, our

Religious School, as part of her new role as Assistant Rabbi/

Educator. And some change has already begun as Adult Education now falls under my purview.

I want to take this opportunity to personally thank Margaret for her passion for our Religious

School over the past 8 ½ years. She has led the school

with great compassion and dedication. She is personally

responsible for having re-built our school from small classes in 2004 to a robust and vibrant program in 2012. Margaret has kept the focus on teaching Jewish values and uplifting students. She has worked personally with all of our children and met each family where they are. Margaret has been a role model in living a life committed to Judaism. In addition, Margaret has supported my goals for our community’s religious education and has fostered creativity among our teachers. I am grateful for the light of learning that Margaret has shared with our Holy Congregation.

As our congregation meets these changes, I know we are all grateful that Margaret will still be a part of our Rockdale family and will be devoting her talents to the future health and sustainability of our sacred community. I also know that as one chapter ends and another begins for Kehal Kodesh, the Religious School of Rockdale Temple that we will build on the foundation that Margaret has set and grow from strength to strength. I am confident (even though I don’t like change much) that our leadership has planned for a positive future for our congregation.

We light our menorahs and embrace change and light. We celebrate Chanukah—the holiday of re-dedication. We re-dedicate ourselves to our traditions and continue in the spirit of this festival as a proud Jewish community. We re-dedicate ourselves to our community, participating and bringing light to others. We re-dedicate ourselves to our future as a Holy Congregation.

F r o m o u r R a b b i n i c I n t e r n~Saturday Learning Opportunities~

An initiative of the Jewish Federationof Cincinnati

“…But the study of Torah is equal to them all because it leads to them all.” (Babylonian Talmud, Peah 1:1)

This month, I’d like to alert you two

exciting opportunities for learning and growth here at Rockdale Temple. These opportunities are not new, however… they are Sichat Torah, our weekly Torah study, and Shabbat morning services!

Every Shabbat, we hold hour-long morning services starting at 10:30am. This is a unique moment for prayer each week, as a small but dedicated group of congregants meets to sing, worship, and hear the words of Torah together. There are a few things about Saturday morning services that I think make these worship opportunities unique. First, we pray in the board room chapel area, sitting in a circle. This allows the group to feel like a community, and to truly hear each other as we pray. Second, every person attending

services has the opportunity to participate in the Torah

service, whether by making an aliyah to the

Torah and saying the blessings over the reading, lifting or dressing the Torah, or even reading the Haftarah selection for the week (in English,

of course)! Finally, these Saturday morning

services allow us all to become more familiar with our

liturgy, various musical traditions, and new(er) prayerbook, Mishkan T’filah. Saturday morning Shabbat worship is a wonderful way to connect with the community, God, and our Jewish tradition.

What may be less familiar to our Temple community is Sichat Torah, our Shabbat morning Torah study. Our study is held from 9:30 to 10:30 each Saturday morning, and is even accompanied by bagels, coffee, and tea! Torah study follows a Parashat HaShavua (portion of the week) format, meaning that each Shabbat morning, we study the assigned Torah portion for

the week. The facilitator of Sichat Torah (usually me, but often Rabbi Coran or even a congregational lay leader!) will bring the text of the Torah portion to the group along with interesting commentaries, related current events, and pertinent questions. Our discussion is always lively, fascinating, and thought-provoking. Even though many participants have been involved in Sichat Torah for years, others are brand new to the study- no experience is required, just an interest in Torah!

I hope that you will join me in prayer and study on Shabbat mornings. Feel free to participate in Sichat Torah, Shabbat services, or both! Come every week or just try it out! These opportunities are open to all in our congregation. I look forward to welcoming new faces to our Shabbat morning observance, and I know that together we will continue to grow and learn as a community.

F r o m O u r B oa r d P r e s i d e n tFifty years ago and why it matters today. . .

Pope Paul VI opened The Second Vatican Council exactly fifty years

ago—October 1962. Why do I choose this topic for discussion in an article addressed to a Reform Jewish Congregation?

Understand that Vatican II as it’s commonly known was nothing less than a shocking event in the Roman Catholic Church—it was the first ecumenical council in nearly a hundred years. While much of what came from Vatican II directly affected the religious practices of those in the Church, perhaps the most dramatic statements involved how the Church would view and interact with other faiths.  Georgetown University Professor John O’Malley describes the overall theme as one of reconciliation—allowing Catholics to pray with other Christian denominations and encouraging friendship with non-Christian faiths.

Growing up in a predominately Catholic community, the years following Vatican II were nothing less than dramatic. Our small synagogue was a fixture just across from the town’s post office—itself already more than fifty years old, yet a mystery to most Catholics in the community. School groups almost immediately wanted to visit the synagogue. Without a fulltime Rabbi, tour duty fell to congregants. My mother, Helen, did many of these tours and I still have vivid memories of parents often being far more interested than the students they chaperoned. The questions—sometimes mildly humorous to a young child---were always genuine.

Imagining similarities to their own churches, many were

fascinated to see the Torah scrolls  as they were able to stand on the bimah and view the handwritten Hebrew lettering. These tours and other interfaith activities created

opportunities to dispel myths and correct

misunderstandings.

The dialogue between Catholics and Jews took place at

many levels and we now have a richer understanding of one another. It is now routine for the Catholic schools to bring classes to our synagogues. And, we have a rich and mutually rewarding relationship with the region’s premier Jesuit University that included last spring’s emotional presentation by Elie Wiesel. The groundbreaking exhibit that chronicles Pope John Paul II and his relationship with Jewish people is now back at Cincinnati at the Skirball Museum at Hebrew Union College. Just two examples of dialogue that might have never happened prior to Vatican II.

The ritual changes brought about by Vatican II are now broadly taken for granted. Catholics struggle with other challenges leaving some both in and outside the Church to question whether today’s Church still embraces some of the more progressive ideas introduced fifty years ago. As Jews,--particularly Reform Jews-- we should take a moment to remember and applaud the messages of tolerance and ecumenical acceptance.

K e h a l K o d e s h~Another Step in Life’s Journey~

Birth is a beginning and death is a destination, but life is a journey…

So begins the prayer that is familiar to all of us in

our High Holy Day liturgy, and those of you who know me, know that I am all about the journey, that I truly believe life is a series of journeys, that various people join us for parts of the journey, some of the parts are more difficult than others, sometimes we take a wrong turn and have to retrace our steps—the parallels are numerous. A journey is defined as “the act of traveling from one place to another,” as such I am taking poetic license with the term and including “traveling” to include spiritual, emotional and psychological traveling.

I came to Rockdale Temple as Director of Life Long Learning in June 2004. Before I even arrived, I was asked to also serve as Temple Administrator, a role I was assured would not detract from my primary duties as Educator and one which, if we deemed it was necessary, would be temporary. Well, life often being what it is, has a way of setting its own course (i.e. journey); the position evolved into a dual-role that has continued for more than eight years. Last year after much thought and prayer I made the difficult decision to pursue the role of Temple Administrator instead of Director of Life Long Learning—a choice that took many people by surprise. My journey has taken me to the place where I know that this is the right decision for me and for my husband, who has lovingly and patiently allowed me to pursue my

dreams while he has put many of his on hold. Journeys

are about being able to listen to the wisdom of the voices of those who have gone before you, of learning from their experiences, of hearing what is often not spoken out loud,

and of discerning what is contained within the

silences.

As I look forward to my future at K.K. Bene Israel, I look back

with pride and humility. I am proud of what we have accomplished over the past eight years: We have gone from Rockdale Temple Religious School to Tzur Shalom to Kehal Kodesh. I am grateful to Rabbi Coran for her leadership, friendship, and guidance throughout the years. We have been led by the most capable Presidents—Gary Heldman, Mike Friedman, Susan Sherman, Barry Gibberman, Mark Schaengold and now Steven Ackermann. We have had amazing Rabbinic Interns and HUC students, fabulous teachers—really, they are the foundation of the school—and parents who are caring and dedicated to their children having a Jewish education. We are a loving community that warmly embraces everyone who walks in the door. I am honored that you have allowed me to share your most intimate moments and be present for so many of your most important lifecycle events. I will always treasure these experiences.

While I won’t be here on Sunday mornings, I will still be part of the fabric of K.K. Bene Israel. I will be working with our Membership team, with Social Action and Outreach, with individual families, with PJ Library, and

of course with all of the Administrative minutiae. You may be wondering what will happen to Kehal Kodesh—in fact, I probably should have begun with that—you will be in great hands for the remainder of the year. Alexia Kadish, our school Librarian, and mother of Zakary, Ethan and Elyse, will be taking over the remainder of the school year as our interim director. She is uniquely qualified for this role—she calls herself a “bridge” as she has served between teachers/directors in the past, most recently at Rockwern Academy. I know you will find Alexia to be thoughtful, wise, and patient as she slides into her new role. Rabbi Coran, Meredith and I have been working with Alexia all year to make sure we have a smooth, seamless transition. Alexia will take a more public role during the month of December, making announcements, being more visible, answering questions, sending out the newsletter, getting to know parents’ names (she already knows most of the kids), and generally acquainting herself with the administrative aspects of being the educator.

Please feel free to talk to either of us if you have concerns about your child/ren; we want to make certain that all of our students’ needs are addressed and that all of our parents are comfortable. Change is never easy, we are creatures of habit and we are most comfortable when things stay the same. Sometimes however, we need to change, we need to grow and stretch; we need to give ourselves permission to take a chance when the still, small voice within us propels us forward. Thank you for your faith in me and for opening your hearts to me. Hazak, hazak, v’nithazek—may we go from strength to strength.

L’Shalom

Baruch atah adonai eloheinu melech ha’olam shehecheyanu v’kiy’manu v’higyanu lazman hazeh.

Blessed are You, our G-d, Creator of time and space, who has supported us, protected us, and brought us to this moment.

Ask anybody in my family and they will concur that the Shechehyanu is, hands down,

my favorite blessing. A blessing of thanksgiving, not only do we say it to usher in the holidays, but it is a blessing that I try to find at least one opportunity to recite each day. Most recently, I have found myself saying this blessing on seeing the beautiful changes in leaves, when in attendance as a friend’s son becomes a bar mitzvah, and (somewhat reluctantly) while sitting beside my oldest son as he learns to drive.

I will even have the occasion to say a “shehecheyanu” when I begin my duties as interim director of education at Kehal Kodesh in January. When first asked to consider this short-term assignment—to serve as the bridge between Margaret and

Meredith—I was honored to be given the opportunity and saw it as a new challenge to experience.

A little bit about myself…I have been in education for the last 20 years, in some avenue or another. Years ago, as I was working toward my teaching credential at California State University, Sacramento, I began teaching Hebrew and Sunday School, something I have continued to do from one congregation to another over the last 20 years. In doing this I have grown in so many ways: “Jewishly,” spiritually, as well as being able to learn along with my students. One thing that has remained constant is my passion for reaching out to a classroom of students who are eager (well, most of the time…) to be engaged and to contribute to their learning adventure.

I look forward to the coming months as a way to get to know better the families who comprise our wonderful Religious School, and to have the opportunity to grow in yet another dimension. I thank Margaret Friedman-Vaughan for her years of dedication to Rockdale Temple’s Religious School and I wish her all the best in the future!

A Special Thanks:Meg Ackermann

Change seems to be in the air this year, and while we have made it clear that neither of

us really likes change, it goes with the territory—people’s needs change, the circumstances of our lives change, our paths take us different places. Part of our transition this winter involves the departure of our intrepid Membership and Dues Coordinator, Meg Ackermann, at the end of December. We want to thank Meg for her invaluable assistance in all aspects of our Membership management—recruitment, engagement, and retention and for having ongoing sensitive conversations with our members. Meg’s commitment to our Temple, even before she became a paid employee, was obvious from the moment she and Steve joined Rockdale in 2005.

We thank Meg for her service to our congregation and we appreciate her and the gifts she has shared with us the past six years: her wit and wisdom, her compassion and kindness, her accounting and financial skills, and her willingness to do whatever task we have in mind and for bringing much needed laughter into the office. Before Meg was on staff, she was a volunteer in our office, so we look forward to her continuing to assist us in various volunteer capacities. And, since Steve is still President of the Board, we know she will not be going far, except perhaps for more frequent trips to Dallas to see a certain grandchild. Thanks Meg—you are welcome to stop in and help stuff envelopes or bring us pizza anytime you like!

With profound gratitude,

Rabbi Sigma Coran &

Margaret Friedman-Vaughan

E n v i r o n m e n t a l C o m m i t t e e~One Person’s Vision~

I tell young people this is the 50th anniversary of the book Silent Spring by Rachel Carson and they respond they never

heard of the author or the book. Yet Rachel Carson forever changed the course of history!

Rachel Carson (1907-1964) earned her Master’s degree in Marine Biology from Johns Hopkins University. Her book focused attention on the decline of bird populations related to chemical pesticides and herbicides. She argued that “contamination of man’s total environment” with chemicals that accumulate in the tissues of plants and animals and humans alter genetic structure, thus presenting the first scientific argument that man-made pesticides may cause cancer in humans.

Industry fought back, labeling her as a crazy hysterical woman who loved birds, and bunnies.

But the public read her book and President John F. Kennedy listened. Federal and state investigations were launched to verify her claims. Carson’s well documented book empowered the people to organize grass roots movements against toxic pollution resulting from chemicals routinely sprayed on communities. Scientists were forced to acknowledge they had limited understanding of unintended consequences detrimental to public health. Silent Spring resulted in an environment movement that continues today. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) established in1970 for federal oversight and protection, was an outcome of pressure from grass root environmental groups. The tasks of pesticide regulation and food safety inspection were

transferred to the EPA from the Department of Agriculture balancing the benefits of chemical crop treatment with its risks. The Endangered Species Act passed in 1973 saved the American alligator, gray whale, bald eagle, peregrine falcon, and continues to protect threatened species today.

However, Carson’s job is not done. Chemical pollution is the third-ranking cause of species extinction in the U.S. after habitat destruction and the influx of alien species. Rachel Carson died of cancer in 1964.

Last month I had the pleasure of attending a lecture by Sandra Steingraber, author of

Raising Elijah, Living Downstream, and Having Faith. She is the “Rachel Carson” of our time. Through careful and sound scientific understanding she explains the perils we face daily and the lack of public policy to safeguard our health and healthy development of children. Every parent needs to read Raising Elijah to protect their children from devastating consequences such as asthma and autism. Through exploration of daily life Steingraber discovers hidden toxins that are affecting children’s health nationwide. I hope you read it!

The battle between the environmentalist and the exploiter is not over. We continue poisoning our air, water, soil, and altering the climate systems upon which we depend for survival. Carson and Steingraber are heroes, each demonstrating that the vision of one can lead many.

The Ritual Committee serves as a liaison between the congregation and the clergy.  Its goals are to

promote and encourage participation in services for Shabbat and festivals  and Shabbat Morning Torah discussions and services, to evaluate liturgy and music, to discuss issues raised by congregants, to understand rabbinic plans in order to explain them to congregants, and to participate in Temple activities.

As we dig into the winter months, a library can feel

like a more attractive place to visit---or at least more so for its printed content than for its air conditioning during the summer heat! If you visit Rockdale’s cozy library, up the stairs from the new community room, you’ll find the usual treasure trove of adult and children’s fiction and non-fiction books, but also lots of new acquisitions. Many get placed first in the display shelves and racks to catch your eye, but some have already been shelved among similar topic books. If you are curious but cannot find a book in our self-service collection, remember that they are all listed in our Card Catalogs--chests of small drawers full of cards, located right by the elevator doors. As we learned decades ago, books are searchable on the cards in both the upper children’s catalog and the lower adult catalog, by 1) the first major word in the title, 2) the author’s last name, and 3) the category of subject matter of the book. Of course, you can always contact me, using the Temple Directory, for help too!

Here are some of our best recent additions.

Children’s books:It’s a—It’s a—It’s a Mitzvah

(Suneby, Liz), Sammy Spider’s New Friend (Rouss, Sylvia), The Animated Children’s Kosher Holiday Cookbook (Peterseil, Yaacov), Brother Sun, Sister Moon: Saint Francis of Assisi’s Canticle of the Creatures (Paterson, Katherine), The Shema in the Mezuzah: Listening to Each Other (Sasso, Sandy Eisenberg), Tefilat HaDerech: The Traveler’s Prayer (Buchin, Joshua), The Vanishing

Gourds: A Sukkot Mystery (Axe-Bronk, Susan), The Mitzvah

Magician (Marshall, Linda Elovitz), Emanuel and the Hanukkah Rescue (Hyde, Heide Smith), Speak Up, Tommy! (Greene, Jacqueline Dembar).

Adult books: Honest Answers

to Your Child’s Jewish Questions (Forman,

Sharon), Dough: A Memoir (Zachter, Mort), Rabbi Outcast:

Elmer Berger and American Jewish Anti-Zionism (Ross, Jack), The Many Faces of God: A Reader of Modern Jewish Theologies (Soncino Press), The Book of Blessings: New Jewish Prayers for Daily Life, the Sabbath, and the New Moon Festival (Falk, Marcia), In the Catskills: a Century of Jewish Experience in “the Mountains” (Brown, Phil), Jerusalem: the Biography (Sebag Montefiore, Simon), The Alexandria Letter (fiction, by Honig, George), Stars of David: Prominent Jews Talk About Being Jewish (Pogrebin, Abigail).

Finally, I was glad to add two books by a young woman Reform rabbi whose early years as an HUC student brought her through Rockdale’s religious school, Jamie S. Korngold. Her career has emphasized finding spiritual meaning in outdoor experience, and so she is known as “The Adventure Rabbi.” They are God in the Wilderness: Rediscovering the Spirituality of the Great Outdoors with the Adventure Rabbi and The God Upgrade: Finding Your 21st-century Spirituality in Judaism’s 5,000-year-old Tradition.

You can see from the above tiny sampling that our library speaks to many, many curiosities and personal styles of Jewishness. Come be a seeker there!
