10% is 1/10

To get 10% of a number

move the decimal point to the left one place or drop one zero.

(We go to the left because 1/10 means to divide by 10 and when we divide by 10 it makes the number smaller.)

Find 10% of 32

3210% of 32 = 3.2

Find 10% of 5.1

5.110% of 5.1 = .51

Find 10% of 4,600

4600.10% of 4600 = 460

Examples:

1. In Dingfield there is 10% tourism tax on hotel rooms. If the hotel room costs $87.50 (for one night), what is the tourism tax?

$8.752. You have a piece of metal that 3.68 ounces. If

the metal is 10% gold, how many ounces of gold do you have?

.368 ounces of gold3. If the total budget is $40,000 and 10% is for

travel expenses, what is the budget for travel expenses?

$4,000
