As 2017 draws to a close, the writers, photographers, and production team who bring you

Bowling Green Home & Lifestyle want to take a moment to say thank you for making us your community’s premier lifestyle magazine.

We hope the decision to distribute the magazines on Sundays will give you more down time to enjoy the articles, try the recipes, and peruse the magazine online at the Community Page of the Daily News for additional images and expanded content.

In this issue, we profi le the eff orts of builder Johnston Boyd, who helped launch Traditions, a New Urban housing development just off Lover’s Lane. His vision literally brought to life a neighborhood where old friends can make newcomers feel equally welcomed.

We also want you to meet just a few of the talented artisans who made the Gypsy Moon winter market a resounding success. Th is unique shopping experience is thanks to the hard work of entrepreneurs Angie and Whitnee Mosley who twice a year transform Highland Stables into a place where retail really is therapy.

If you missed the market, it’s not too late to fi nd that perfect gift. Just to be sure it really is perfect, we asked area merchants to recommend a few of their favorite things that you might decide to wrap up for yourself.

We also checked in with our local lawn care experts to get the skinny on ornamental grasses and fi nd out why keeping fallen leaves off the lawn makes spring a lot greener.

Last and certainly not least, over one hundred thousand votes were cast in the Daily News Reader’s Poll to honor the Best of Bowling Green.

From car repairs, to consignment clothing, this is a list you should make note of.

We hope you enjoy this holiday issue of Home & Lifestyle and we look forward to another New Year. We will continue to introduce our readers to the talented builders, creative people, and special events that make Bowling Green sparkle 365 days a year.

Everybody jokes about retail therapy, but can shopping really serve as a healing forum? If the founders

of the Gypsy Moon Marketplace have anything to say about it, the answer is a resounding “yes.” Angie Mosley and her daughter-in-law Whitnee Mosley transformed Highland Stables on Hunt’s Lane from a training facility

for Tennessee Walkers, into a destination shopping venue that

restores a little camaraderie to the holiday rush. Th e stables have

become home to one of the most successful pop-up markets for artists and crafts people from around the

region to showcase their wares, meet their customers, and network with other vendors.

Th e women launched Gypsy Moon three years ago and at the time, Angie says they had to convince vendors to

participate. But now, thanks to eff ective advertising, word-of-mouth buzz, and a fantastic venue, the waiting list for vendors has exploded.

What makes Gypsy Moon special isn’t just the diversity of artists and artisans who want to connect with shoppers. It’s actually a two-way street. Shoppers enjoy coming to the market to explore the world of one-of-a-kind fi nds—from handmade jewelry, to woodwork, vintage clothes, furniture, fl owers, and everything in between. Instead of hustling along sterile corridors lined with big box retailers, it feels more like a happy fl ash mob of people who suddenly found a better way to shop.

Maggie Jernigan is here with her friends, Carly Shoulders and Ellen Th ompson. She says she loves to shop, but views the mall as more of a necessity than a pleasure. Th ey all agree that pop-up venues like Gypsy Moon are more fun than brick and mortar retailers. Especially at the holidays’ they value the quirky one-off s over mass-produced gifts.

And shoppers aren’t the only ones who appreciate the joy of discovery.

spreadsheets and crunching numbers at her husband’s CPA fi rm, says her therapy comes from making each of the colorful night lights that line the shelves of her booth. “My therapy is doing this instead of doing accounting,” she says. Hilliard has been participating in these pop-up craft markets for 20 years and gives high marks to Gypsy Moon Marketplace.

Th e market occupies a pair of open-air corridors that spill out onto the shared patio. Originally designed to accommodate horses, each barn is divided into stalls with a promenade down the center. During the market, musicians perform authentic bluegrass, and at every turn there are layers of intrigue and things to see because vendors bring their A-game when decorating the stalls that serve as their storefronts. Delicate twinkling strands of light, classic cars with Christmas trees, rough-hewn woods, metal trellises, vintage fabrics, and other elements make each of the booths unique, inviting, and inspirational.

“Some vendor fairs are so stark. Th ey just put tables in a gym or something. But Gypsy Moon is diff erent,” says

Hilliard.Many of the booths represent

partnerships among artisans who then share the expense and support one another during the long workdays. Sandy Stiles started Sassy Scents candle company, and her business partner Danielle Patton founded Bird and Bone jewelry. Th ey are just two of the working artists who realized there was strength in numbers. Inspired by the show American Pickers, they joined forces to become Th e Pickin Chicken Southern Sundries where they sell their crafts as well as up-cycled items and one-of-a-kind pieces.

Some of the pop-up vendors also have brick-and-mortar retail locations. Th ree years ago, businesswoman Starlla Malloy partnered with her sister Drue Walker to open Southern Sisters boutique on 31W By-Pass in Bowling Green. And while their retail store enjoys a dedicated clientele, they view these pop-up venues as an opportunity to interact with new clients, introduce their collection of chic bohemian fashion, and showcase their unique market fi nds.

When the weekend draws to a close and vendors break down their booths, they often go back to their day-jobs or their Etsy platforms. In the clatter of dismantling their booths, and packing up their inventory, the exhaustion is palpable, but the spirit of community presides. At the end of the long weekend, they still wait patiently in line or even lend a hand to help fellow vendors pack up and leave.

Pop-up shopping is like a throwback to the marketplaces of old before the hype of Black Friday or Cyber Monday, or Amazon drones dropping Chinese merchandise from a clear blue sky.

And fortunately, for the other 364 days of the year, Etsy platforms and Facebook pages off er a way to support the eff orts of local artists who think outside the box, and keep those greenbacks locked and local.

Holidays are all about tradition and at our house — as with many families — Christmas decorat-

ing begins on Th anksgiving weekend. Unpacking the boxes of cherished holiday ornaments, I am always transported back to my childhood, to memories of Christmases long ago with grandparents and other loved ones whom I have lost. And while I am grateful to have inherited the old-fashioned wooden beads and vintage blown-glass ornaments that once belonged to them, I really wish I had more of their stories.

What was Christmas like in their

families during their childhoods? As we decorate our tree, I wonder

how Christmas was for them — grow-ing up poor in Oklahoma and having almost nothing, or struggling to put dinner on the table during the Depres-sion as Italian immigrants in Chicago. What brought them joy? What brought them together? Certainly, not all holiday memories are wonderful and full of warmth, but everyone’s story is unique and everyone’s story deserves to be told and remembered.

Th is holiday season — whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Winter Solstice or you just

lay low during December — I challenge you (and myself) to take time to write down an important memory from this time of year.

It doesn’t have to be a life-changing event; just write about a particularly vivid memory. Maybe it was that time you fi nally got the present you antici-pated for so long. How did you feel? Who made that moment so special? Why do you think that moment is still so clear in your mind?

You can also write about a less-than-positive memory. When did you stop believing in Santa Claus? When did you realize that Christmas requires a lot of work and preparation to make it magi-cal? How did you get through that fi rst Christmas without a loved one?

Th e fi rst part of writing down memo-ries is for you, the writer, as you try to fi g-ure out what you want to write. Writing down these memories doesn’t have to be complicated. If you are good typist, then by all means type out your fi rst version. Otherwise, writing things by hand works just as well. Th e goal is just to get words on paper. You can refl ect on it and revise later with or without feedback from other people. Just fi nd a comfortable spot and give yourself a goal — a time frame, or a page length. Th en let your words fl ow. If your mind wanders, that is OK! Let your memory be your guide and don’t worry about punctuation or spelling right now — you are in creating mode.

If writing is not your strength or seems too intimidating, then just do what Santa Claus does — make a list. Th e process is the same — give yourself a time frame or page length — and then make a list of the details and ideas that come to mind as you refl ect on holidays past.

Remember to include sensory details of that moment (sight, smell, taste, touch, sounds). Add some refl ection to the memory — how do you understand that memory now, after so many years? Why was that moment important to you then and now?

After you have a draft, you can always share it with people whom you trust and ask for feedback. Explain what you need — be it help with grammar and punctuation, or just to tell you if there

Traditions Comes of Age by Strengthening Community Ties

There is Social Media and Socializing

Most neighborhoods don’t have Facebook profi les, but Traditions is not like most neighborhoods.

When builder Johnston Boyd broke ground in 2008, the idea was not to just build houses, he also wanted to build community.

Th e development honors the tenents of New Urban design that encourage exchanges between neighbors. In addi-tion to the zero lot lines and large front porches, it features communal spaces designed to create an extroverted social atmosphere, says Boyd.

When he launched this project, Boyd

could not have foreseen the global fi nancial collapse or the excessive over-runs around his infrastructure costs, or he may have chosen an easier path. But, fortunately for Bowling Green, this tal-ented builder stuck to his vision and now Traditions has clearly come into its own.

Th e one-of-a-kind architecture and distinct character of each of the homes in the Boulevard District has been joined by a chorus of mixed use residential spaces including patio homes and traditional family homes all within easy walking distance of the shared amenities — club-house, ponds, pool, gardens and workout

facilities — that make Traditions more than the sum of its parts.

Having recently relocated to Bowling Green from Atlanta, homeowner Penny Woronoff quickly came to appreciate Traditions’ central location and the turn-key lifestyle. She has already hosted her fi rst open house get-together as a thank you to the many people who listened to her ideas and welcomed her to the neighborhood.

An empty nester, Woronoff didn’t need tons of square footage, so she opted for a customized version of Boyd’s patio home design that, in turn, inspired him

to incorporate some of her “must haves” into subsequent designs.

Th ose must-haves included bench seating in the dining area, built-in book-cases in the great room and clerestory windows throughout that allow privacy and also natural light. In the back of the home, they added a screened-in porch overlooking the yard because Woronoff says on nice days, she “lives on the back porch.”

At 1,650 square feet, the three-bed-room, two-bath home reads much larger, thanks in part to the high ceilings and their decision to use a consistent palette from one room to the next. Woronoff

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP: Creative Wood Designs in Russellville helped the homeowner get exactly what she wanted. Using Sherwin Williams paints, the design team stayed consistent with a soft white and gray palette to keep the fl ow from one room to the next. Throughout, they kept oil rubbed bronze fi xtures, Meera White granite countertops, and contrasted alabaster white with the stained alder. The walls and ceilings are Agreeable Gray throughout most of the house including this comfy guest room. A hidden appliance garage was retrofi t into the design and beside it is a pantry.

credits interior designer Tara Coomer of Coomer & Co., with helping her chose paint colors and architectural details that serve to unify the design.

Creative Wood Design in Russellville did much of the cabinet construction and Woronoff says they couldn’t have been more helpful. Th eir work is show-cased in the kitchen, the laundry room and the bathrooms.

Th e kitchen, in addition to being beau-tifully appointed, is also very functional. “Meera white” granite countertops, an arabesque patterned backsplash, glass

front ceiling height cabinets and a crisp color palette set the stage where Boyd extended the length of the working island, repositioned the refrigerator and added a large pantry alongside the appli-ance garage. Th ere are pot drawers and even a retractable shelf for storing the garbage can. Th is effi cient work-triangle makes the space more user-friendly and also keeps clutter at bay, which is critical in an open-concept fl oorplan.

A custom shower in the master features a tile pattern meant to evoke a waterfall. Again, bronze fi xtures and a tone on tone palette were used throughout.

In the master suite, they used Cadet Gray on the walls and Agreeable Gray on the ceiling. It is a reverse of the strategy in the great room and provides a subtle distinction from communal to private spaces.

This four-post bed was an heirloom piece, but much of the furniture and several area rugs were sourced from Bowling Green Home Furnishings.

Like many people who set out to build a custom home, Woronoff turned to online sources for images of what she liked. She says she was always impressed by her builder’s ability to sort through her ideas and scale them to the project.

And when it came time to choose certain exterior fi nishes — like brick color, a front door, a roof color, or any other elements of the façade, she didn’t

have to travel very far. Woronoff says she just explored Traditions from one home to the next, noting the elements that she liked the most. “It was easy,” she laughs. “I just went driving around the neighbor-hood and then just told Johnston what I liked.”

Perhaps it is time for Boyd to update the status. Maybe he should add the words “life-sized, real-time home shop-ping network” to the Facebook profi le that showcases this New Urban neigh-borhood in the heart of Bowling Green

Even in Kentucky There is More to Grass than Blue

Feather reed, ribbon grass, plume grass and bunny tail are just a few of the many varieties of ornamental grasses that grace land-scapes in and around Warren County. When winter arrives, it’s

important to know what type of grasses are growing in the garden, because cool season ornamentals and warm season ornamentals require the same type of care, but at diff erent times of the year.

Basically, cool season grasses put out their growth before it gets too warm and after it cools down. Th ey can be left alone through the winter months but must be cropped by two-thirds before they start new growth in the spring.

Warm season grasses as the name implies, shoot up in late spring and grow all summer. In the fall, these warm season grasses will inevitably turn brown. Some homeowners leave them alone even as they lose their color because they add visual interest to the garden.

which grasses to cut and which to keep. His crew is busy through December and January pruning monkey grass and other ornamentals to keep them healthy and vibrant. “Some people like to leave them higher, but we typically take them down pretty low,” he explains.

Of course, heavy equipment makes lawn care more effi cient, but homeown-ers can use a pair of pruning shears or an electric sheer to crop their ornamental grasses. He recommends gathering the grass into a sort of pony-tail, tying it with heavy string, and pruning it in one motion. “It’s easier to tie them tight so they’re not laid over while you’re trying to cut them,” he explains.

In addition to cropping grasses, Basehart’s crew spends the cold months selectively pruning deciduous shrubs.

“For Years The Look Of Distinction”

Th ese shrubs that lose their foliage in the winter are easier to prune when they’re exposed. He also says it’s less stressful for the plant to be gently pruned in winter because they’re not trying to “push-out” like they do when spring arrives. But he warns against pruning boxwoods too late in the season because they are more deli-cate and need time to harden off before the cold sets in.

Last but not least, it’s important to keep those fallen leaves in check because a blanket of leaves, no matter how beauti-ful, is a lawn killer. Basehart cites oak trees in particular and says many variet-ies of oak will drop leaves throughout the winter months so it’s important to stay vigilant. “Th ey can do a lot of damage fast,” he says.

When asked if lawn care even has a down season, he chuckles and says, “no.” When the weather is terrible, his crew stays busy maintaining their equipment.

Of course, everybody enjoys a Christ-mas break and Basehart is no exception.

Naturally, the next question for this local lawn care expert: Real, or fake?

Basehart doesn’t hesitate. “I’m a die-hard Christmas tree person. I use a cut Frazier Fir.”

He says he enjoys the tradition of selecting a tree with help from his

He wonders why anybody would prefer to pluck an artifi cial tree from the attic year after year, untangle the branches and plop it in the corner. “I was raised with a cut tree and I like the smell and as long as I’m able I’ll have a cut tree. It builds memories. It builds traditions.”

As an avid reader of several food-related periodicals, I fi nd it hard to throw away these culinary nuggets

of information with their adventures to distant lands. My wife jokingly implied that I might be a hoarder. So, somewhat grudgingly, I began the process of sifting through well-organized stacks of magazines, and that is when I saw the pattern.

Looking at every month of each publication, there was an obvious pattern in the November and December issues. Photos of glistening, golden turkeys adorned each publication’s cover, the only diff erence being a twig or two of holly on the December issue. Delving inside, it was amazing how every year they managed to tweak not so much the turkey but the accompaniments. I don’t know why I was so surprised. As a chef, I had been doing it for years. It is a formidable task to develop new dishes every year, so I applaud the editors for their creativity and tenacity.

Everyone around the world has diff erent traditions and ways to celebrate the holidays. We like to make Christmas dinner special. Th ere is no football, and we all dress nicely. Th e table is set with linens, and we continue a tradition from

my English roots—Christmas crackers, the ones you pull with the person next to you, releasing the silly little prizes.

When I think of Christmas dinner, chilled oysters on the half shell and smoked salmon come to mind, followed by a nice salad of Belgium endive with shaved fennel, pear and blue cheese as a precursor to a majestic standing rib roast and all the classic accompaniments: Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, glazed carrots and Brussels sprouts with chestnuts, along with a nice au jus and a heady horseradish sauce. For dessert, Christmas pudding with hard sauce is the norm, and I off er up a nice lemon tart and a chocolate pecan torte. Some meals just stand the test of time: Th anksgiving and Christmas are two of them. I experiment with food the other 363 days of the year.

We are a country fortunate enough to celebrate Th anksgiving, so we get to eat turkey twice in a relatively short span of time. Having been raised in England, turkey was a favorite at Christmas, along with goose and duck. It was a ritual to go to your local butcher shop and place your order in advance. Come Christmastime, the butcher shops and the old markets were adorned with birds in full plumage

hanging from the ceiling and rafters—quite a sight.

When roasting any bird, it can be challenging to keep the breast moist while cooking the thighs through. To get around this and to cut down on the cooking time, this year we are going to spatchcock our bird and cook it on the grill for a woodsy, smoky fl avor. Spatchcocking is when you remove the backbone from the bird and then fl atten it out by pushing down hard on the breasts, cracking the bone slightly. Th is method of cooking fowl decreases the cooking time and allows more fl avor internally, plus you get that meaty backbone for the gravy.

You can roast the turkey in the oven, but I’m going to grill outdoors. A gas grill works well, as you can control an even temperature, but I prefer the fl avor of wood. I make a mop of apple cider and butter, fl avored with fresh sage and thyme. Regionally in Texas, cornbread dressing is the norm and a nice change from the more traditional white bread as it gives it sweetness. Smothered green beans, mashed potatoes, a cheesy sweet potato gratin, soft yeast rolls and a touch of jalapeno in the cranberry relish bring it all home.

SPATCHCOCKED TURKEY

Spatchcocking, Irish in origin, dates

back to 18th-century cookbooks.

Spatchcocking any bird basically means

butterfl ying, which results in less cook-

ing time and juicier meat—and it's a lot

easier than it sounds.

INGREDIENTS:

Whole 10-pound turkey, breast side up

METHOD:

1. Turn the turkey over, breast side down. Using a pair of sharp, heavy-duty kitchen shears, cut along one side of the backbone. You may have to use both hands to power your scissors through rib bones. A sharp knife can also help get through the tougher spots.

2. Repeat on the other side.

3. Save the backbone to make turkey stock or gravy.

4. To fl atten the turkey, press down fi rmly on both sides of the breastbone until you hear a cracking

sound. Try to get the turkey as fl at as you can. At this point, you can season and roast the turkey right away, or you can brine it.

5. To roast the turkey, tuck the wingtips under the breast.

6. Place the turkey on a rack on a

sheet pan. Pat the skin dry, rub it with butter or oil, and season with salt, pepper and herbs.

7. Roast at 350 degrees for 1 hour, 30 minutes. Baste with butter or pan drippings. Increase heat to 400 degrees and roast for an additional 15 minutes to further crisp skin. Internal temperature at the thigh should be 165 degrees.

8. Remove the turkey to a platter or cutting board and tent it loosely with foil. The internal temperature will continue to rise 5 to 10 degrees. Use the pan drippings to make gravy. ENJOY!

Place your hand on one side of the breast and push fi rmly until you hear a crack. Repeat on both sides. For better leverage as you work, stand on a step stool.

Set aside backbone (and giblets) for stock. Take hold of both newly cut edges and open the turkey. Remove large pieces of fat. Turn turkey breast-side up.

Turn turkey breast-side down. Use poultry shears to cut along both sides of the backbone beginning at the tail end, If you hit a tough spot, try cutting with just the top of the shears.
