What is NAPLAN? The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is an annual national assessment for all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. All students in these year levels are expected to participate in tests in reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy. All government and non-government education authorities have contributed to the development of NAPLAN materials. In 2018, NAPLAN tests will be held next week from 15-17th May.

Home Reading Thank you for continuing your support with home reading. The students are progressing in reading at their own rate. It is important for them to experience success with their reading and readers are sent home two levels below the level they are reading in a supported reading lesson. Home Reading should be fun for both you and your child. If you would like some support with reading there are some videos available for you to watch on our website. Go to curriculum and activities and at the bottom of the menu you will find Home Reading Support. Click on this and there are some videos showing you how to support your child at reading levels 1-9. If you have any concerns please contact your classroom teacher or Lynn Chittick. Change of K-2 Assembly Time K-2 will be holding their award Assemblies on Thursdays at 11:45 from Thursday 4th May. Parents are welcome. Year 5 Berry Camp Students are already excited about our Term 3 excursion to Berry Sport and Rec Camp in September. The club will run workshops on Tuesdays before school starting in Term 2. The club is open to girls and boys in Years 3 to 6, but there are only 8 places left, so get your application in quick! To find out more information and to print out the application form please visit http://miltondroids.edublogs.org.

Message to Students We understand things change at the last minute sometimes, however there has been an increase in the number of parents phoning the office with arrangements for student pick-ups. Arrangements for pick-up should be organized prior to school starting to reduce class disruption. Volunteer Reading Tutors Needed We are on the lookout for more reading tutors for the Multilit Program in 2018. This program is run through the Volunteer Reading Scheme and assists children in Years 3, 4 and 5. The program offers one on one tutoring to improve reading skills, and runs four mornings a week between 9:30 and 10:30. Please contact the school on 4455 1504 if you would like to assist with this program. MILTON ULLADULLA MULTICULTURAL PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITION The school competition will take place in the hall in week 5. Stage 3 will be on Tuesday 29th May and Stage 2 on Wednesday 30th May. The competitions will start at 9:45am and finish before 11:20am. The 2 winners from each Stage will then compete in the local final to be held in the school hall on Wednesday 13th June. BOYS CRICKET Good luck to the Boys’ cricket team who are playing Narooma today at Bodalla in the third round of the PSSA knockout competition. Stewart House Each year 1,800 public school children come to Stewart House from many parts of NSW. During their stay, children are provided with optometric, dental and medical treatment as well as emotional support. This is balanced with health and educational programs and out of school activities to boost their self-esteem and to promote a healthier lifestyle. Stewart House needs your support to ensure we can continue to provide important services to children. Students at Milton Public School are again supporting the Stewart House Day donation drive. Envelopes are attached to this newsletter. Please return envelopes by Friday 18th May. Thank you all for supporting such a great initiative.

Did You Know? Almost 3 in every 100 children have a peanut allergy. Even trace amounts of peanut or tree nuts can trigger an allergy and kill a child. Anaphylaxis is a serious allergic reaction that can cause itchy rash, throat or tongue swelling, shortness of breath, vomiting, light-headedness, low blood pressure and cardiac arrest. Tragically, Australian children have died at school from nut allergies. There are several children at Milton Public School who have a life-threatening nut allergy. Our school strongly encourages you to help minimise harm to those students by not sending nuts or nut products to school. Your assistance and understanding is very much appreciated.
