13 June 2019 Term 2 Week 7
Welcome to this edition of our school newsletter. I hope you and your families are managing to keep well – there does seem to bit quite a lot of sickness around at the moment. On that note, could we encourage you to keep your children at home if they are feeling unwell. Schools are perfect incubators for all kinds of coughs, colds and sneezes! This week we held our annual “Kirkwood Kid for a Morning” for prospective students from Ilam. Our children enjoy working with our visitors, and certainly made them feel welcome. Last year we invited those children who had enrolled from other schools to come and visit for a morning and this also was a great success. We will be holding a similar event in Term 4. Our school will be holding our annual Open day and Open night on Tuesday 2 July. We would appreciate it if you could mention this to anyone you may know who is considering coming to Kirkwood next year. We would also appreciate your support in helping your children attend in the evening if they are asked – thanks in advance. Last week I was fortunate to be able to attend a conference where the key note speaker was Sir Ken Robinson. As a leader in educational thought and especially creativity I felt it important to hear just what he has to say. He was really thought provoking and interesting. Some of his work is available on the internet – one of his Ted talks is, apparently, the most watched Ted talk of all time. If you have an interest in education I would strongly recommend taking the time to listen to him – you may not agree with everything he says (and to be fair, I don’t) but an awful lot of what he says makes sense. One part which sticks in my mind was him describing being interviewed, where he said that it was as important for children to learn performing arts as it is for children to learn mathematics. The interviewer queried this by saying, but how many children will grow up to be dancers? His response was, how many children grow up to be mathematicians? I guess we should always look at schools, what we are teaching, and ask ourselves what it is to be human, and what skills and attributes, along with what knowledge, do we need to teach and learn? I hope you are continuing to enjoy your association with our school. Please remember that we are here to help as much as we can. Best wishes Phil Tappenden, Principal

Our Kirkwood students were really excited to show these Year 6 students some of

Please ensure you do not drive up the school driveway (front & back entrances) to
drop off or pick up your children either before or after school. It is too unsafe for
our children.
Please also ensure you do not park over driveways or double park when picking up
and dropping off your child. This also includes the cul-de-sac in Karamu Place as it
is not only unsafe for your children but also upsets out neighbours.
Thank you for you support with this.
PARKING CHANGES
For those parents/caregivers who park across from the main entrance to school on
Riccarton Road, please note there are new signs which have been put in place for
school bus parking. These parks are used on school days only and they operate
between 2:30pm and 3:30pm.

Ministry of Health Message to Schools
As you may have seen in the media,
it’s shaping up to be a tough flu
season, with flu already circulating
widely across New Zealand, and
Australia reporting a record number of
flu cases and even deaths.
Influenza infection rates are generally
highest in children and healthy children
are the major cause of the spread of
the virus in the community. You can
spread the flu bug without knowing you
have it and the elderly, pregnant
women and people with chronic health
conditions are particularly vulnerable.
Please see www.flufree.co.nz for more
information and flu facts.
