Thoughts from the Principal

At the start of Week 7 we welcomed 18 international visitors from Vietnam to Figtree High School. The students will be here for two weeks and will be staying with families from our school. Deputy Principal Report

We are now over halfway through the term and I have enjoyed meeting a number of students and parents in my capacity as Deputy Principal. Parent Teacher evening will be held for Year 8, 9 and 10 on Thursday 5 July. At this time students will have received their reports and I encourage all parents to attend the evening. More information will be distributed closer to the night. Year 8 Last week Year 8 attended the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney. The feedback that I received from the teachers who attended was extremely positive and I am looking forward to discussing it with the Year 8 students when they return to school on Tuesday.

Year 10 A number of assessment tasks will be occurring at the moment. It is extremely important that students are prepared for these and complete each task to the best of their ability. When a student does not complete an assessable task on time, an N warning is sent home. These N warnings need to be rectified in order to achieve their ROSA (Record of School Achievement). In the coming weeks I will be reading all of Year 10 students reports and will be making phone calls home to parents who I am concerned with the progress of their child. Year 12 Last Friday the school wore mufti clothing to assist Year 12 with fundraising for a gift for the school. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing the school body get behind Year 12 and wear clothing that showed support for their team. Student Success Assemblies will be held for Year 11 and 12 on Monday 18 June. This is where student success is celebrated in front of peers and parents. Mrs Jemma Lawson Relieving Deputy Principal Year 8, 10 and 12

TAS Faculty Report

In Technology and Applied Studies this semester we have been extremely busy preparing for the implementation of the new Stage 4 Technology Mandatory syllabus in 2019. This has been an exciting time as we have been able to trial and prototype units of work and designs. STEM underpins the new syllabus and provides opportunities for different types of thinking to be incorporated from a variety of context areas into the

knowledge, understanding and skills strands. The new syllabus aims to enable students to become confident users and developers of technologies and as such there is a large portion of the mandatory hours devoted to coding and computational thinking. The new context areas include;

• Agriculture and Food Technologies • Digital Technologies • Engineered Systems • Material Technologies

LANDCARE GRANT In order to prepare for the effective delivery of the agriculture and food technology strand the faculty was successful in obtaining a grant from Landcare. The money from the grant enabled us to design and build a small kitchen garden. Many of the Stage 4 students, as well as students from the Work Studies class, have been involved in the design, purchase and creation of this garden. Vegetables that have been grown in this space have then been used in the weekly food practicals. This process has given students a new appreciation of where their food comes from, recycling, as well as the importance of the slow food movement. The faculty has plans to include Indigenous artwork in the space and optimistically a watering system in the future.

STAGE 4 METAL WORK This project involves students researching and designing a metal artwork or book stand. Students bend and mould their projects into unique and creative works of art. Mr Solah and Mr Liddle have been impressed with the end results and take great pleasure in assisting with the final decorative finishes.

VISITORS TO OUR CLASSROOMS This semester we have been privileged to have members from the local school community come and visit our classes. We absolutely love when professionals and specialists come and share their expertise and stories. This not only enhances the curriculum we are teaching but provides students with first hand experiences of work in real world scenarios. We were fortunate to welcome DEVIKA, a local technology company based at UOW, to come in and work with our Stage 5 Information and Software Technologies classes.

The students experienced Virtual Reality technologies and took part in simulations.

CHILD STUDIES The Stage 5 Child Studies class had two visitors on the same day, both graduates from Figtree High School. This experience provided students with valuable information related to working in the child care industry. Samantha Grech spoke about her role as a child care worker, working in a child care centre and outlined her roles and responsibilities in this field. Haley Newman discussed her experience as an Au pair working in the United States. The students expressed their enjoyment in participating in this experience and ensured they were further prepared for their Assessment Task, which involved having a computerised baby to care for overnight and creating a journal of their experience. Many of the students were very keen to return the babies back to the staffroom at 8am the next morning and speak about their sleepless night.

INFORMATION SOFTWARE AND TECHNOLOGY Students from Year 9 have been learning about Digital Media. They have gained an understanding of the data types and during this process have completed small individual and group projects. The students have had the opportunity to use a variety of software; Adobe Photoshop, PowerPoint, Prezi, Pivot and Movie Maker to create short animations. The class then enjoyed “Movie Time” where they ate popcorn and viewed their peers short films based on a “Rose” theme. We had mummies who rose from the dead and Star Troopers holding singles roses.

STAGE 6 INDUSTRIAL TECHNOLOGY TIMBER Our Stage 6 Industrial technology Timber students are well into the completion of their major wood projects. The students, with the assistance of Mr Solah, have been busy designing and building their own creations. It is quite exciting to witness students design and build such amazing works. The students have gained confidence and skills and have quickly learnt the importance of time management, particularly when it comes to creating the associated digital portfolios.

QUALITY FOOD PRODUCTS In our faculty, we continue to create and cook amazing food. The culinary skills of our students’ continue to impress. It is not surprising that many of our graduates’ gain employment in the Hospitality Industry and we definitely enjoy hearing of their continued success, especially when they return to demonstrate and share their expertise.
