Principals ReportWe have passed the half way mark for term 3 and what a busy term its been with a number of internal and external events taking place. Internally, our Year 12 students have recently undergone their Trial Higher School Certificate examinations. These took place over two weeks with most of the exams being held in our school hall. The Trial HSC is a guide for our students to gauge where they are at with their content and essay writing skills leading into the Higher School Certificate. Currently, our Year 11 students are undertaking their Preliminary HSC yearly exams. Good luck to all of our senior school as they navigate the next few months. Last week we had a number of initiatives take place run by our motivated Student Representative Council and individual students. Monday was Pawgust, a fantastic initiative run by student, Anaky Palmer, and supported by teachers, Amanda Brown, Paul Owen and Danielle Abbott. The much needed funds raised will be used to purchase a new harness for a guide dog.‘Wear it Purple’ day took place on Friday, run by the SRC, to show support to the LGBTIQ youth and wider school community. Externally, Mr McCabe took a number if students to the Tamworth Show where students received ribbons

in a number of areas including, steers, sheep and show chickens. The THS Musical, Popstars, is almost ready to launch in Week 9. The students and Creative team have been hard at work rehearsing several times a week. This will be a highlight on our social calendar. Lastly, Parent/Teacher interviews. Are taking place this week. We encourage parents and carers to use this valuable opportunity to discuss the progress of your student face to face with our teaching staff. The interviews will take place on Tuesday and Thursday night, to register for an interview, please access the SENTRAL parent portal. Three students represented THS at the North West CHS Athletics in Sydney last week. Centenary update 100 years ago in 1919, it was decided that a secondary school north of Maitland, was needed and the growth centre of Tamworth on the Peel Valley north of Goonoo Goonoo station developed by the Australian Agricultural was identified and the new school was opened on the current site of Tamworth Public School, in Upper Street. Tamworth High School moved to its present site in 1961 because student numbers had outgrown the old site and by 1968, had reached its maximum size of 1800 students and over 100 staff. It was around 1970 that it was felt that the history of the school should be documented and this task was undertaken by a school teacher at the school, Mr. Lyall Green, who had also become the noted town Historian for Tamworth. In 1978, the school magazine, The Koala, contained a historical section from the work of Lyall Green and in the same year a time capsule was buried under the new school library to be opened in 2019 for the school centenary. In 1984, further work had been done on the school’s history by Mr Brian Boggs, Mathematics Head Teacher, which was published in the 1984 Koala, and a second time capsule was collected and buried under the school library to again be opened for the school centenary in 2019.Both these capsules were opened in March this year and the contents were displayed during the week of festivities marking the Centenary of the school here in Tamworth. An assembly was held during week 7, displaying both of the time capsules with a third one containing memorabilia from this year. All three time capsules will be buried under the school library and opened in March 2069 to celebrate 150 years of Tamworth High School providing secondary education to Tamworth students. Our thanks are extended to Peter Dillon of Tamworth Laser Plumbing who has provided us with the three cylinders for the time capsules, and to Tamworth BOC gases that have provided the school with the Argon gas to fill the cylinders and act as a preservative for the materials stored for the next 50 years. For those of you who will still be around in 50 years’ time in Tamworth, please take the opportunity to make sure these cylinders are opened in 2069 and again be surprised as to what was important in each of the years, 1969, 1984 and 2019. Mr Ken Hall Centenary Committee

Timothy Sullivan attended the State Festival of Instruments in Sydney from 26 to 30 July. Playing lead trombone in the state Senior Wind Band was a remarkable achievement. This is an ensemble of young musicians selected from across the state. Tim was one of two playing his part. A challenging activity, demanding 8 hour rehearsals across the weekend and sound checks in the Opera house on Monday and Tuesday. The opportunity allows students to play highly complex music in a professional environment culminating in performances at the Opera House.

New England Instrumental and Vocal Camp was recently held at Lake Keepit Sport and Rec Camp. A number of Tamworth High School Students attended, participating in both the Instrumental and Vocal programs. An exceptional, week saw the students work hard in both rehearsals and tutorials. Many students having the opportunity to gain specialised tuition on their instruments. The week culminated in a Concert for the parents which was very highly received.

Three Tamworth High School Students were recognised in the recent Tamworth Regional Conservatorium of Music Showcase. Vienna Edwards, Jordann Lavers and Timothy Sullivan. Mrs Bec Sullivan Music Teacher

As many of you may have heard, the canteen menu is undergoing a change. This has come about, as in 2015, 22% of children aged between 5 and 16 in New South Wales were overweight or obese. Due to this finding the NSW Government has released a target to reduce this figure by 5% by 2025. The NSW Healthy Schools Canteen Strategy was formed to support student health by providing access to healthy foods and drinks. This strategy will address our canteen and many other canteens across NSW to help support the healthier growth and development of our children. All public schools are required to transition to this strategy by the end of 2019. Tamworth High Schools canteen has been slowly introducing this and will be making every effort to have healthy and interesting menu items that meet the requirements for students. We look forward to the support from students, staff and parents in progression to a healthier wellbeing of everyone involved. Mrs Yvonne Bryan Canteen Manager

Two weeks ago, we had two of our Tamworth High School year 7 & 8 debating teams in their first competition of the debating calendar. For such a young team both teams did their school proud and debated with great skill and confidence.

Unfortunately, Tamworth Team A with only a week to prepare for their debate did not come away with the win, they were up against a tough opponent and a tough affirmative question “Should parents ban television for children during the week”. Their use of persuasive language would make any English teacher incredibly proud, the adjudicator gave us exceptional constructive feedback which they will put into use in their next round against Quirindi.

As for Tamworth Team B who went against Narrabri, our students have used not only their practice at persuasive language that their teachers should be proud of, but also their high level of determination to come away with the win. The topic to argue was that “Should we ban social media for students under the age of 18”, for this we were once again the affirmative. Our students used many current examples that have been displayed in the media surrounding cyber-bullying and the affect this has on young people. Once more the adjudicator gave us high level feedback which our students will use in their next debate against Quirindi.

Both teams should be congratulated on their confidence, skill, and their exceptional skills at arguing. Congratulations year 7 & 8 debating teams, well done. Mr Aaron Woodlands English Teacher

Debating News

On Tuesday, the 9/10 Elective History class attended the Ag Farm and conducted an excavation of an ancient grave site. Over several hours, the students sifted through one tonne of dirt to reveal the resting place of an ancient princess. The site contained animal bones, jewellery and evidence of ancient burial practices and funeral rites. Mr Lasscock said, “This dig site is part of the HSIE faculty’s commitment to improve the learning experiences for our students. Hands on activities are engaging and different and allow the students to use their creative and imaginative sides. Ironically, we are bringing history to life. This dig is part of an ongoing assessment where students were required to apply for permission to conduct the dig and, at the conclusion of the dig, provide a comprehensive report on their findings.” Elective History student, Ryan Southern, stated, “We learnt the processes that archaeologists have to take, the hands on experience was more beneficial than what we could have learned in the classroom. It was well prepared and a great experience. Myself and my colleagues thoroughly enjoyed it.” Mr Steve Lasscock HSIE Teacher
