As a part of our Positive Education journey we are learning about the links between wellbeing and

gratitude. As a part of this journey we have (and will) explore the feelings associated with

gratitude and how gratitude can potentially help us find inner peace and contentment. In the past

gratitude was about discovering who we are by looking inwards. But in a 21st century world it is

about outrospection or, discovering who we are by stepping outside ourselves.

Gratitude is about –

Being aware of and thankful for the good things that happen

A sense of wonder and energy which can cause a ripple

Appreciation for what is valuable and meaningful to oneself

A positive emotion

Felt in different amounts and different ways by different people

It is about feeling appreciation and then acting on that feeling in some way (for some of us we

respond positively whilst others react in a negative way). Gratitude is a choice, it can be

transformational, a journey, a habit or a way of life and implies humility.

Gratitude can connect people to things outside of themselves – to other people, to the

community and nature. At KPPS we are working towards creating a grateful community.

This term staff have participated in Positive Education training, classes have created gratitude

walls and we have a gratitude wall in our foyer where anyone in our community can show their

gratitude to another person.

REPORTS

PARENT SURVEY Student report changes This semester there will be a minor alteration in the way Maths and English are assessed on student reports as we

transition to a new design next year. This section of the report will be in a dot point format directly related to the

Australian Curriculum Achievement Standard, enabling parents to see in which areas their child excels, is at

standard or receives additional support at school more easily.

This is a sample page from our new report layout.

Some student reports may not have all three competency levels listed on their report. The terms Advanced,

Competent and Developing definitions are listed below for your reference. These were developed by the

Western Adelaide Region:

Advanced: Demonstrates at a higher level an understanding of the concept, explains choices, actions and

content, with purpose and clarity. Works independently, precisely and efficiently. Applies knowledge in a wide

range of problem solving contexts. Demonstrates reasoning – analysing, generalising, proving and evaluating.

Competent: Consistently and confidently demonstrates knowledge and understanding of concepts in new

contexts. Demonstrates full understanding of the content, working flexibly, fluently and accurately. Applies

knowledge and is able to explain processes and thinking.

Developing: Demonstrates limited understanding of concepts. Requires support with the basic concepts of the

content. Applies knowledge in limited contexts. Knowledge and understanding is not consistently demonstrated.

CHRISTMAS RAFFLE POWERFUL LEARNING

7

On Tuesday 21st October, our Partnership’s Primary Principals chose Ebony and Danielle to

demonstrate their good practice and promote the powerful learning that is evident in our

Foundation Unit. Twenty six Foundation and Year One teachers came to observe Ebony’s

and Danielle’s expert skills and knowledge in Investigative Play Base Learning.

The students in the Foundation area confidently demonstrated their skills as 21st Century

learners while independently working on their learning intentions. Expertly, they were able to

use many tools including the Ipads, to record their own and other student’s discoveries be-

fore sharing their learning during the reflection time.

Ebony and Danielle later presented, to all the visitors, how they have embedded both the

Reggio Emilia and Kath Walker approach when delivering the Australian Curriculum to our

youngest students.

Many of our visitors, although extremely experienced in their field, commented on how much

they had learnt and had been inspired by Ebony’s and Danielle’s practice.

We have another smaller group coming to visit next week from Roxby Downs.

Congratulations and we are extremely grateful for the power learning that is happening in U4

and U5.

On Monday week 5, P1 and P2 students were given a Mental Health Pack. Inside

was some information on anxiety, depression and bullying and how students can

access help for themselves and their friends. Some of the resources are from

Beyond Blue, Headspace and Reach Out. The students are encouraged to share

the information with

their parents and

guardians.

Piano, Flute and Recorder Lessons This year I started group music appreciation classes for the younger ones in the

school. Years R-2. We used the recorder to learn the basics of music notation and

music theory. Most kids at this age want to learn an instrument, but usually their

hand size is too little for most instruments. Music appreciation will allow them at a

young age to learn music notation/theory and then as they grow they can shift to

another instrument of their choice with a head start in music knowledge.

Music is a unique way for your child to express themselves. Lessons will take place

once a week.

Costing: $7.00 each child including hiring of recorder.

$19.95 one off book fee.

I currently teach piano and flute at the school, which are individual lessons. There will

be lessons available in 2015, so if you think your child would like to learn one of these

instruments or if you have children interested in the music appreciation classes then

please leave your details at the front office with Carol or you can come and see me at

the school on Tuesday or Friday.

SPORTS NEWS TROPHY NIGHT Our hall was bulging at the seams with a big turnout of friends and family celebrating an-other successful year of KPPS sport last Friday night. We had a record 9 Soccer teams, 4 Netball, 2 Cricket and a Teeball team in 2014. We also had about 20 students joining combined Football teams with Lockleys North PS again this year. Thanks to our fab coaches all year and our supportive parents. We couldn’t do it without you! Special mention to Tony Hall our Under 9 Soccer coach and school delegate who is leaving us after 4 years. You’re a dynamo! We’ll miss your booming voice and boundless energy around our school. A big thanks also to Freddy for his smoothly running the BBQ with parents from OSHC.

SPORT RESULTS KANGA CRICKET KPPS vs Star of the Sea Another great performance with great all round efforts from Sam and Tate. Special mention for Matthew’s outstanding outfield catch.

NETBALL 5 /11/ 2014 U9 Kidman Pink Panthers 14 Whitefriars Yellow 2 Goals scored by: Jazmine B (4), Erin K (2), Jade H(3), Marie D (5) High energy game given by all and a smashing score. Well done!

TEEBALL KPPS vs St John Bosco Result: Tie It was great to see that KPPS had 12 participants for the 1st game of the T-Ball season. All of the children were very excited to be getting into the game and experiencing competitive T-Ball for the first time representing KPPS. To their credit, and against a far more experienced outfit, KPPS tied with St John Bosco on 26 runs a piece! A fantastic effort by all with particular mention for this first game to Billy V, Gemma C and Quinn F (who also gets the inaugural award for stoicism in the face of a few knocks that didn't faze him one bit...!). Well done to everyone who played and congratulations on some wonderful sportsmanship. Our next game is Friday 21st November against Immanuel on Diamond 2, so hopefully we’ll see you all there again.

KPPS KANGA CRICKET The boys from Kidman Park Primary School's Kanga Cricket Team were lucky enough to be one of the few schools chosen to play on Adelaide Oval during the lunch break of the SA Redbacks V’s Victoria Bushrangers Shield match. The boys all had a great time showing their skills on the hallowed turf.

KPPS CHESS On Monday 27th October Allan, George, Liam, Sean, Liam, Nicholas and Christo-pher represented Kidman Park Primary School at the State Chess Championship at Tyn-dale Christian School. Each person had to compete in nine rounds of chess. Some rounds had prizes. Kidman Park played really well and won the Fair Play and Sportmanship award and came 7 out of 11 overall for the day.

Page 12: Term 4 week 6

MEDICAL INFORMATION There have been a couple of cases of Parvovirus (Slapped Cheek) at Kidman Park PS. How parvovirus is spread Parvovirus B19 infection is spread by direct or indirect contact with airborne droplets from coughing or sneezing. Infection may also be transmitted from a woman to her fetus. Once the rash appears, the person is no longer infectious. An exception to this is in infected people with immune suppression, who may remain infectious for months. Signs and symptoms Children The most common illness caused by parvovirus B19 is 'fifth disease', a mild rash illness that occurs most often in children. About 20% of infected children will have no symptoms at all. In others, early in the infection there may be mild cold-like symptoms, then 2 to 5 days later, the child typically develops a ‘slapped cheek’ rash on the face and a lacy red rash on the trunk and limbs. The child usually is not very ill, though the rash may occasionally be itchy. The rash disappears after 7 to 10 days, although it may come and go for several weeks, often in response to heat. On recovery, the child develops lasting immunity and is protected against future infection.

Diagnosis Parvovirus B19 infection is diagnosed by a blood test. The blood test can also be used to test for immunity, to see if the person has had the infection in the past. Incubation period (time between becoming infected and developing symptoms) 4 to 14 days from exposure, though may be up to 20 days. Infectious period (time during which an infected person can infect others) Most people with parvovirus B19 infection are not infectious once the rash appears. Immune suppressed people with parvovirus B19 infection may be infectious for long periods.

Treatment There is no antiviral drug for treatment of parvovirus B19 infection.

Prevention Exclusion from childcare, preschool, school or work is not necessary as people are

infectious before they develop the rash. There is no vaccine for prevention of parvovirus B19 infection. Wash hands regularly. Clean surfaces contaminated by discharges from the nose or throat.

Pregnant women who are concerned they are at risk of exposure to parvovirus B19 infection (for example, school teachers) can have a blood test to detect evidence of previous infection and therefore immunity. Over 50% of women will already have had the infection and these women and their unborn babies are protected from infection and illness.
