Term 6 Week 3 Daily Learning for Year 2
On to week 3 already!! This week we are basing our learning on the book ‘The Snail
and the Whale’ by Julia Donaldson. This book is all about a snail who would like to
travel the world – would you like to travel to other places in the world or do you like
being somewhere you know well?
The film of the story can be found here:
https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m000cslw/the-snail-and-the-whale
This pack contains a weekly over view followed by a breakdown of the daily tasks.
All resources for the week are at the end of the document for printing.
Each Day:

Choose one of the places
that the snail and the
Whale visit and make a
poster to advertise that
place as somewhere for a
holiday! Use the internet or
an atlas to find out about
that place and see what
you can include on your
poster.
This week we are looking at
multiplication and division
word problems. Today we will
begin with single step
multiplication word problems.
We will use all of the practise
that we have been doing on TT
Rockstars to support us as we
multiply today.
Science
We are focusing in the need of
humans to exercise to keep
healthy. What do you do to
exercise? Why is it important?
Why is it important that we also
have sleep to keep us
healthy?

Persuasive Text – Today we
are going to write to the
Head teacher in the school
where the children went to
help the Whale. We need
to persuade the Head
teacher that while the
children will miss some
learning – going to help the
whale is more important!
And could be a learning
opportunity too!
Today we will move onto 2
step words problems that use
multiplication to solve them.
These can be tricky so take
your time and read the
question carefully! Don’t forget
that you can draw out images
to support your working out –
you do not have to be able to
work it out in your head! Draw
base ten, arrays or groups of
dots to support you.
Geography
As the snail and the whale are
out at sea we can look at life
under the ocean this week.
We will look at the Great
Barrier Reef in Australia and
find out a bit about life there.
We will compare this habitat to
the habitat that we live in.
We
d
The snail and the whale
travel across the ocean to
visit many places together.
Think about landing on a
tiny island in the middle of
the ocean. What can you
see / hear / smell / touch /
and NOT taste – why?
Today we are describing a
setting – the small island
and imagining what it
would be like there,
including all of our senses.
Could you use some
comma lists?
Today we are moving onto
one step division word
problems. Again make sure
you use resources or drawing
to support your working out.
Art
After learning about the
different things that you might
see under the sea can you
create a shoe box under the
sea scene – Use a shoe box or
a cereal box and paint the
inside and then you can add
fish hanging in the box. How
will you create the back
ground and some plants? Can
you use different techniques
that you have learnt at school
this year?

Imagine you were the snail
in the story and you were
going travelling. Can you
write a list of things that you
would pack in your bag
and explain why you
would take them. Would
you need clothes for hot
weather / cold weather?
Would you need to take a
favourite book / toy?
Today we are moving onto 2
step division word problems.
Again these can be tricky so
take your time and underline
that important information to
support you.
RE
Today we will share a story
from the bible about the
creation of the Earth. We will
learn about the Christian belief
that God created the world in
six days.
Fri
If you were to go on an
adventure on the back of
the whale who would you
take with you and why?
Can you write about who
you might like to go away
with and why you would
choose them? Would they
be helpful? Fun? Kind? Do
they like to travel? Have
they never travelled?
Reasoning and problem
solving – Can you solve these
problems using multiplication
or division and then explain
why or how you know that you
are correct? You could prove
it using a calculation or you
could write a sentence using
because.
Computing
This week we are making a flip
book that can create a
moving image!
Please find weekly resources at the end of the pack.

The Snail and the Whale visit lots of different places in the book - Choose one of the
places that the snail and the Whale visit. Now try to create a poster to advertise this
place as somewhere to go on holiday. You are trying to persuade someone to go
there so think carefully about the features of your place that people would travel for.
Would there be a beach? Mountains to climb? Sports to enjoy? Sunshine? Ice?
Why would people want to go there? Don’t forget the features of a poster – big bright
writing, small captions to explain, big eye catching words and images (pictures).

Maths Task – Multiplication and Division Word Problems
This week we are moving onto solving multiplication and division word problems. We
will begin today with 1 step multiplication problems. Can you remember the
multiplication sign? What do you need to do when you read work problems? (Make
sure that you underline the important information to solve the problem)
See if you can CAREFULLY read the problem right to the end so
that you know what you are solving and then underline those
bits of information that you need. Now you are ready to draw
out an array to help you solve the
problem.

Travelling such long distances, the whale would need to fit – it is important for
humans to keep in shape too. Exercise is crucial for our physical and mental health.
Please use the power point attached to explore exercise and then the sheet to think
about changes in your body as you exercise. You might need to do some exercise
to check! Move onto learning about important sleep is to keep you healthy – use the
attached activity to support you.

Half way through the story there is a disaster in the book where the whale gets stuck
on a beach. The poor whale can not move on land because he is too BIG! Your job
today is to write a let to the Head teacher of the local school to persuade them that
the children should be allowed to leave school and their learning to go and help the
whale. What do you think you could say to Mrs Martin if you were try to convince her
to let you all out of school, onto the beach to pour water onto the whale to keep him
well? How can you make your writing persuasive enough? Can you think about
some words that you would use to persuade someone? Please write your letter,
including an address and can you think of a name for the Head teacher?

groups would there be if the children were in groups of 2?
Maths Task – Multiplication and Division Problem solving
Today we are moving onto one step division word problems. Again make sure you
use resources or drawing to support your working out. Please use the sheet below

Writing task – Writing a List with explanations
Imagine you were the snail in the story and you were going travelling. Can you write
a list of things that you would pack in your bag and explain why you would take
them.
We need to consider that we would be travelling through lots of different weather
conditions, we need somewhere to sleep and we will need some food with too. Take
your time to consider how you are going to spell each word in your list and see if
you can fill the page. Please make sure that you have a reason for each item as
there is not much room in the suitcase for anything that we don’t really need!
Maths
TT Rockstars / Numbots (10 mins)
Mental Maths Challenge – There were 6 cakes in a box – if there were 36 people
how many boxes of cakes do they need to have one each? How about if they had 2
each?
Maths Task – Multiplication and Division Word Problems
Today we are moving onto 2 step division word
problems. Again these can be tricky so take your time
and underline that important information to support
you. 1. How many children are there altogether?
17 + 14 = 31
2. We now need to count up in 4s – 4, 8, 12, 16, 20,
24, 28, 32 – How many tables is that? 8
So the answer is 8 and there will be one space on a table for the teacher!

RE
This is a story told by both Jewish and Christian people about God. The book is
written at the beginning of the Bible.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_PBpCA2nxG8 - The Creation Story
What does the story tell us about what God is like? (big, powerful, exciting, clever,
patient)
Talk about how Christians think that God created the world in six days, and then
rested on the seventh. They believe that God provides everything we need to
survive: land, water, air, sunlight, food to grow, living animals and people) so
humans should thank God above all. The creator is so amazing that Christians want
to praise God and thank him saying how wonderful they think he is.
Activity: Can you think of key words for the story, then draw and order them -
practise retelling the story.

The snail was so lucky to get to travel with the Whale and they became great
friends. We are all having to spend lots of time at home at the moment but If you
could go on an adventure on the back of the whale with anyone at all who would
you take with you? Why would you choose that person?
It might be that you choose a friend you have not seen for a while / a relative that
you like to visit / someone from a group or club that you usually attend – It could be
that you know someone who likes to travel or someone that has not been abroad
before so may enjoy the trip! Have a think !
Can you use a dictionary at home to check your spellings after you have done your
writing and as an extra challenge can you add in 2 more adjectives to your writing
and a comma list somewhere?
Maths
TT Rockstars / Numbots (10 mins)
Mental Maths Challenge – There are 17 snails on a rock and 14 on a plant. There
were a further 18 having a ride on a whale – How many were there all together?
Maths Task – Reasoning and problem solving with multiplication and Division
Can you solve these problems using multiplication or
division and then explain why or how you know that
you are correct? You could prove it using a calculation
or you could write a sentence using because.
Answer: 6 x 5 = 30 prove it: 30 Shared between 5 = 6
5 x 10 = 50 Prove it: 50 shared between 10 = 5
3 x 10 = 30 5 x 2 = 10 30 + 10 = 40
Prove it: 5 + 5 = 10 40 – 10 = 30 and 10 x 3 = 30
